Different Teams at the Xcel
Some different teams at the State Tournament would create a more exciting atmospherre. The same teams (Edina, Hill-Murray, Moorhead, Eden Praire, Blaine, Duluth East) year after year takes away some of the interest. What I would like to see.
Section 1: Rochester Mayo - Maybe having a Rochester team in the tournament would give their youth programs a shot in the arm.
Section 2: I'm torn between Burnsville and Prior Lake. I'd like to see Burnsville at the Xcel because they have the best student section in the state. Prior Lake would be good because they have never been to state.
Section 3: Hastings has been absent for a while and they have some decent wins.
Section 4: Like to see Stillwater so Housley wouldn't be able to do any of the broadcasting.
Section 5: Centennial, another team with a long absence.
Section 6: Holy Family
Section 7: Rapids becasue they have the best band.
Section 8: Brainerd, another first timer.
The tournament will be fun whoever makes it, but some fresh blood would add to the excitement.

Always nice to see new teams at the tourney. I was happy to see Eagan make it in 2011 after making their first appearance in 06. Centennial could be a team that could make it depending on their goaltending. When he plays good he can steal a game for them. I'm not totally against Edina making it since they are always good enough to be there, but they have made 6 or 7 straight tourneys so seeing a new team (Prior Lake) would be exciting to see. Holy Family would be a nice story if they made it, but their section is incredibly deep and they are probably a few years from having their program really grow to where they are a contender in the postseason.

I know it would be completely crazy and expensive to do this, but it would be kind of cool if they seeded the entire state, sort of like NCAA basketball, and built the brackets that way (keeping A and AA distinct, OK).
Expensive, because you'd have to find a way to have #29 Luverne play #82 Ely, while #19 Roseau hosts #67 Winona. There'd probably be a greyhound traffic jam on I-94.

Man I go every year but if even half of those teams made it I would skip..what a disaster that would be..bring me Hill Edina, BSM Duluth East, Eagan, blaine, bring in a new section 1 team every so often and a new section 8 team hre and there that is finegreenway1969 wrote:Some different teams at the State Tournament would create a more exciting atmospherre. Then you might as well do like football and have an "Elite class" that will be the same teams every year at Statehockeyhockeyhockey wrote:Man I go every year but if even half of those teams made it I would skip..what a disaster that would be..bring me Hill Edina, BSM Duluth East, Eagan, blaine, bring in a new section 1 team every so often and a new section 8 team hre and there that is finegreenway1969 wrote:Some different teams at the State Tournament would create a more exciting atmospherre. The other thing the NCAA does is use the top 4 as the top seeds, then they seed each region geographically. It wouldn't be perfect, but if we had 8 "regions" then it wouldn't be that big of a deal.Shinbone_News wrote:I know it would be completely crazy and expensive to do this, but it would be kind of cool if they seeded the entire state, sort of like NCAA basketball, and built the brackets that way (keeping A and AA distinct, OK).

Like with any change, if enough coaches/ADs care and want something to happen, it will. Coaches seem to not have the same feelings that fans do...
I always find the "private schools make for empty buildings" notion funny.East Side Pioneer Guy wrote:People say they want to see new teams. But money talks and you know what walks. And the money says people want to see Hill and Edina. They hope to see them lose, but they will pay to see them.
I want to see the best team from each section.
It's also nice to see the small schools do well. Like Hill.
According to the MSHSL, three sessions have drawn over 19,000 going back to 2005. BSM has participated in all three. Edina and Hill-Murray have been in two apiece.
-2008 Thursday Afternoon: 19,232
Edina vs Cloquet
BSM vs Woodbury
-2008 Friday Night: 19,547
BSM vs Edina
Roseau vs Hill-Murray
-2012 Friday Night: 19,197
Moorhead vs Hill-Murray
BSM vs Lakeville South
I find the 2008 Friday night session stands out as the least proportionate to school size. For example, the combined enrollment of those schools is 4,418. The next year, 2009, 18,032 people attended the Friday night session, the lowest Friday night total from 2005-2012. The combined enrollment for those schools (Eden Prairie, Blaine, Moorhead, CDH) is 8,242.
This probably is mostly due to coincidence, but I believe it does dispel the "private schools make for empty buildings" notion, at least for state.
If you find any mistakes in my math or anything like that, let me know in a civilized manor.

Agreed. Public vs. Private or any small northern school vs. big suburban school make for the largest crowds and best atmosphere.

If you don't have an Edina or Hill-Murray, who's everyone going to cheer against?
Villans are necessary for a great state tournament. And I like upsets too, but be careful what you wish for. Everyone loved Lakeville South beating Duluth East last year, but the reward was the drubbing Benilde put on them the next night.

that's a funny quote....Stillwater lost their best defensive player to the USHL a month ago..they've struggled to regain their game since

If you got the top 64 teams out of subsections for a state tournament an interesting twist would be random draw every round FA Cup style.
Just put 64 names in a tumbler and draw them out two by two, played at home sites with the smaller school by enrollment getting home ice. After the first round is done throw the 32 names back in the tumbler and repeat until you are down to 8 when they go to St. Paul.
Obviously would never happen because of the fear of the nightmare #1 vs #2 matchup round one, but it would undoubtedly create some great matchups and a lot of excitement. People would be huddling around radios and TVs starting middle of February listening to who's going to play who and how long the road trip would be. Plus with the smaller enrollment home ice advantage you would have a lot of metro teams heading up north which could make for some excitement.
Think about having Edina or BSM having to go to Amsoil to play East in a state tourney game. Or BSM having to make the trek to Roseau for a first round game.

Nice FA cup reference. I bet most people on the board dont get that. Go gunnersthestickler07 wrote:If you got the top 64 teams out of subsections for a state tournament an interesting twist would be random draw every round FA Cup style.
