4AA Final: White Bear Lake vs. Hill-Murray

Post by stpaul »

This will be the 14th time HM and WBL have met in the Section Finals (17 if you count Mariner). All together they have met 28 times in Section games. There have been many classic games in this rivalry. Let's hope we get another on Friday night.

I'm hoping for a classic as well, just not expecting one.

Sounds like both teams didn't play their best last night. Hopefully they saved it for Friday.

I'd be fine with a repeat of their previous game this season, but I'm not expecting it. The gap between the two teams has closed some since then. In the end, if HM has 1 more goal than WB I'll be happy.

The most important storyline to follow as we enter this game will the impact that Pope Benedict XVI's resignation will have on Hill-Murray. The last time that Hill-Murray played a hockey game without an acting Pope was...never!

Hill-Murray has never played a hockey game with a vacant Papacy. In fact, the last time that a Papal vacancy occurred during a prototypical hockey season was the "sede vacante" in-between Pope's Pius XI and Pius XII, which occurred from February 10th until March 2nd of 1939, 20 years before Arch-Bishop Murray Memorial High school and Hill High School were even established.

What effect will the Pope's historic resignation have? Is this a sign of the hockey gods changing favor? Can White Bear capitalize on this once-in-a-half-millenium phenomenon? Does Jesus still love Hill-Murray more than White Bear? I guess we'll find out on Friday night!

Who knows.. maybe Benedict XVI himself will fly in from the Vatican to lace em up now that he's retired from his papal duties..

Hill Murray and it won't be close; 5-1 or 6-2.

I have to agree with this. 6-2 and this what it will be like for the next few years for WB in the finals. Jake is a great player for WB but why not get a head start on his future. He will have a pro career..

I guess I may look at it differently than some people, but if he reaches a pro level, it's going to happen.

You get one shot at high school, one shot at college etc etc. He knows where he is going to college, so I guess personally I would want to give it one more shot at a run for the X.

Maybe I am overvaluing the state tournament in today's hockey landscape, but man I've listened to countless people in their adult life reference back to how much fun high school hockey/football/basketball etc were.

I want what's best for the kid and he has a tough decision, will be interesting to see what happens.

I see he's going to Umass to be with his older bro.. It will be cool that the brothers get to play together, but I think he would look better in Maroon and Gold in a few years. I just don't get why a kid with his talent would want to go to Umass if he has the chance to playelite

I agree, playing with his brother must be very important to him.

Becuase he could aim much higher. Big-Ten, New super conference.

No not uneducated just a little biased is all lol but hey I wish the kid all the luck in the world. I just would've loved to see him stay in the state.

Giller is a solid player no doubt, but he is in no way, shape, or form Jake Wahlin.

Agreed, but with Jake leaving (is this even for sure?) he and A.J Welch need to be great for a trip to the X.

The fact that no one is saying anything besides his departure makes me believe it is true, but I dont know for certain.

U have a better chance at seeing God Friday night at the region final then seeing Jake in the NHL...

Don't you mean a game at the X? "Trip" makes it sound so much more than an afternoon. Two games at Mariucci, now that' a trip.

And I don't count Mariner as being part of the series. After all Mariner managed to win a first round game. Though that Hill-Mariner 1980 OT final at the St.Paul Auditorium was a fantastic game.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say Sager will use the neutral zone trap to try and contain the pioneers.

The only way this game stays close is if the bears score first, and they get some production from the senior class. Maybe #8 with 1G and 3A on the year can light the lamp. Or #11, with 2G and 4A can chip in.

Oh, and they also need Gorman to add another brick to his wall.

This is actually a good point. Some people forget Giller is only a soph in his first year of HS puck. By senior year no doubt he will be on the level of someone like the older wahlin.

We see wahlins #s and forget how good the whole soph class is for WB (and the freshman newpower)

Its too bad (at least for WB) that's Davis Z went to Hill, otherwise the WB blue line would be super solid with the likes of dittel, Whippler, new power etc
