dominance of other sports programs

Post by Nostalgic Nerd »

I did a quick research and came up with some of these dominating numbers. It isn't a good comparison to hockey but thought was interesting, especially the Edina girls tennis who must have gotten pissed off after '93-96

From 1993-96 were the interruption in years Edina girls did not win a tennis title. Jefferson took 3 out of 4. From 1978-92 Edina. 1997-present Edina. The Edina boys has never won more than 4 in a row in comparison. (I believe they still hold more than any other school though.)

Since 1996 Eden Prairie has won 8 state football titles.

Hopkins boys b-ball titles: '02, 05-06, 09-11

CDH baseball titles: '81-82, 86, 89-90, 92, 96-98, 01, 07

Apple Valley wrestling titles: '85-86, 91, 94-95, 97, 99-04, 06-present

I'm presuming for the meantime the Edina girls tennis would be the most dominant sports program in MN history.

STA swimming, some of their times better than Big10 schools in the same pool ( don't care enough to do proper research).

1951,1952 state invitational champion
1961-1970 State Catholic Invitational Champions
1995 State Champions (Tom Malchow Olympic Gold Medalist)
1999-2013 Class A champions/True Team State Champions

It was '99-08, but still, 10 years straight is crazy.

If I counted right, going back to 1958 Edina boys tennis has won 24 titles.

From '99-'13 they either won the class A championship or the true team championship, some years both.

Since 2005 (is that when it started?) STA has won the Class A True Team State Title every year.
And yes, unfortunately they got 2nd in 11/12, 3rd in 10/11, 2nd in 08/09 and 3rd in 03/04. No 10 years straight as you say, but titles 11 of 15 years and 2nd or 3rd in the other years in that span.
I guess "or" would've been more appropriate than "/"

The Alpine Ski team also has titles in 93, 97, 01, 03 and 09-11.

Can't find info on them, but they've also gotten a handful of national rifle team titles in the last couple years.

Totino-Grace Football has won titles in 1977, 1978, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2012. They likely would've won in 2011, but they opted up to 5A that year. They have opted up to 6A next year.

Edina and Eden Prairie have quite successful swimming programs.
Edina won State Team Titles in 04 and 07-10 as well as True Team AA titles in 09 and 10.
Eden Prairie has now won the last two State Team Titles and True Team AA titles in 12 and 13.

Benilde has 3 of the 6 Boys LaCrosse Titles
Blake has 4 of the 6 Girls LaCrosse Titles, with Eden Prairie having the other 2.

Very interesting that Totono Grace has opted in football at every opportunity. Smaller enrollment but have done the right thing.
This model has not been followed by STA hockey.

How does waiting until you've won 6 of the last 8 4A titles constitute "every opportunity?" #-o
They also could've opted to go into 6A this past season, but instead stayed and in 5A and dominated every opponent they played. They had two games where the margin of victory were 3 (a 6A team), 14 and 15, but all others were landslides.

They have one of the best football programs in the state and I wouldn't take anything away from them for it, but your statement is quite inaccurate.

Could not have opted up last season, can only opt up every 2 years when sections are redone. Your right that they have dominated, but they are doing the right thing when the opportunity is there.

So interesting that even a thread about recognizing the accomplishments of schools all around the state can turn into private bashing

Then please explain to all of us how the 32nd biggest team in the state (Apple Valley) was in 5A and the 55th biggest team in the state (Cretin-Derham Hall) was in 6A this past season #-o

Tonka won 7 team titles (including a run of 4 in a row) between '88 and '97 to go along with wins in '78 and '11, and True Team wins in '08 and '11.

Simple explanation. When CDH opted up, they bumped av out of the biggest classalso totino did opt up last year. By enrollment they were a 4A school and they opted up to 5A

Which contradicts what alcloseshaver said. Yes, it is a simple explanation.

alcloseshaver's response was essentially correct. Teams are only allowed to opt up in years when sections are redone, which is normally done every two years. Since football added Class 6A last year, sections were redone in a year in which they normally would not have been. Therefore, football teams could opt up last year and Totino Grace did opt up to 5A.

More to the point, Totino Grace is to be commended for moving up in football on several opportunities. I wish more schools, in several sports, would follow their example.

Thanks for saying what I meant. They have chosen to move up when they should have. Good model.

I don't understand how you can win the true team championship when you are in A? Are they going by "time"?

There is a Class A true team and Class AA true team title.
Track has A/AA/AAA.

Here's some more...

In boys soccer, Apple Valley has nine titles ('84, 88-89, 92, 97-98, 06, 09-10). Edina is the only team to have threepeated (99-01).

Girls Cross Country, Duluth East with seven straight (92-98) in AA.

In volleyball, Robbinsdale Armstrong 1980-84, 00 and 02 in big school. Columbia Heights 86-87 and 89-90. Shakopee 07-09. Chaska in 91, 93-94,96, 05-06. Eagan with four in the last 20 years.

9-man: Stephen Argyle, supposedly just "Argyle" in 81 and 86, and "Stephen" in 92. Full-name titles in 99, 03-07, and 09. 10 title in all. I'm pretty sure that's the most of any school.

Other football: Totino Grace with seven (03-04, 06-07, 09-10, 12).

Similar to wrestling, swimming has a true team championship and an individual championship, where team points are kept.

The wrestling team tournament is a MSHSL championship, true team track and swimming aren't. The MSHSL awards a state champion in track and swimming based on points earned at the state meet.

Girls soccer: Wayzata has seven titles (91, 96, 00, 02, 09, 11-12); Woodbury has five (99, 03-04, 06, 08); Mahtomedi has six in A (97, 99, 04-06, 08)

Boys Cross Country: What's impressive about Southwest is they did it over the span of 30 years. Mpls Southwest 18 titles (46-48, 50, 52-54, 59, 62-65, 69-73, and 80 assuming "Southwest" is the same); Burnsville five titles (75-79, 86); Mpls South 88-91; Wayzata 92-93, 00, 07-08, 10 ; Stillwater 95-97, 11-12; Hopkins 98-99, 01-02;

Girls Swimming and Diving: Virginia took the first 15 in 18 years (24-26, 30-41); no title from 1943-74; Burnsville had five (81-83, 85, 02); Edina is catching up to the leader with 13 (84, 86-88, 92, 99-01, 03-04, 10-12); Eden Prairie fourpeated (96-99); Stillwater with four (05-06, 08-09)
