Breck (7-0-1) vs Edina (7-2) 12-26-13 8pm

Post by HShockeywatcher »

The showcase game of the quarterfinals matches two very good teams against each other. Edina just beat three very good teams in three days and they look to do it again. Breck will be playing the three toughest games of their season in three days and looking to stay undefeated.

Edina 1 Breck 0 after 1
Shots in favor of edina 9-8
Bellows with the lone goal assisted by malmquist. Pretty play bellows brought the puck out of the edina zone made a pass to malmquist in the neutral zone making 2 breck players zone in on malmquist then he went right back to bellows with a pass at the blue line where he then had a one on one with a defender where he created some space and had a hard wrister from the top of the circle.
I thought edina did a good job limiting Breck's chances and have done a great job creating pressure in the breck zone. They could crisp it up a little more on catching passes and limiting some turnovers. Pretty much what has stopped them from another goal or two
Breck had the lone powerplay but did not really get much going with it. They have had a couple of odd man rushes and one breakaway, so they are getting some good looks but when they have the puck in edina's zone they are struggling a little as Edina is doing a good job keeping them to the outside.
Good game so far

2-0 after 2 with edina leading
shots in the 2nd were 13-4 in favor for edina. Giving us a total of 22-12

The game has definitely been more chippy as it has gone on. Lots of big hits and some scrums after the whistle. It was kind of a weird period for brick I thought. They only had 4 shots and two came right at the end but for the first 5 min of the period I thought they were outplaying edina by a long shot. They hit a post, a crossbar on a wide open net, and had some great pressure. Edina then took a penalty and I thought for sure breck would score and they did have a good look on a one-timer early on the man advantage but after that they struggled to regain the pressure on the powerplay and then struggled after the power play with edina then taking back control.
Edina dominated the last 10 min where they had a couple waves of attack and one section where breck did not control the puck for 3 minutes. The goal by malmquist came by using his speed. puck was sent up the wing to Wait on the left side where he passed it by a defender trying to block the passing lane while malmquist flew by the defender covering him and went in alone on the goalie.
Both teams had 1 powerplay in the period.
I have been impressed with Henry Johnson the breck goaltender and also with Keiffer bellows of Edina.
Corrections to my updates above: on the first goal they added a 2nd assist to Tyler Nanne
and on the 2nd goal they added a 2nd assist to Ben Foley

goal Breck on the powerplay 3-1
Mark Sharp credited with it. It was 5 on 3 for 1:38 and they did not score but on the 5 on 4 they did. Good goal on a one timer right into the top corner. Looked like something you would see from Ovechkin

Final 4-1 Edina
They did not show the final shots but they were pretty even in the final frame so i would imagine the shots were about 34 for edina and 25 for breck.
Breck played well in the last period. they had 3 powerplays. One with about 4 minutes left when they were down 3-1. Rolhkol played well in the 3rd for edina in net, Was tested the most in this period and the only goal that beat him was a good one.
What ended up hurting Breck was that goal they gave up 30 seconds into the period scored by Malmquist. Meyer took a shot from the point and it was deflected by Malmquist. Henry Johnson had a word with the ref as he did not like the call it seemed. Looked like he might have been bumped in front by Wait and was looking for a interference call.
The goal for Breck on the powerplay was scored by Sharp. He was on the left side at about the dot of the circle where he got a feed from behind the goal line on the right side where he one timed it top left.
The final goal was a one timer by bellows coming low in the slot off a pass from Garret Wait on a 2 on 1.
The line of Wait Bellows and Malmquist was on fire today and was the line that got all the goals which was good to see them step up when masterman munson and Fidler had chances but could not find the back of the net.
This was my first game seeing my hornets play this year and I was pleasantly surprised by bellows who I always new was offensively very good but he was very hard to beat in the circle tonight and was contributing defensively with a number of blocks. He does need to be careful with some of his hits as he can get a little high.
Overall It was a fun game to watch and it should be interesting seeing Edina and burnsville tomorrow in the semis
