St Thomas Academy (11-5-1) @ Cretin (13-4-1) 1-28-14 7:30pm

Post by HShockeywatcher »

The biggest game on both teams' schedules each year will be played in a likely sold out Highland Arena. Maybe the broadcast on MSBN will help control the crowd.

The Cadets are 7-0 over the last 6 seasons in this match up since Cretin's last win in the 06-07 season. This is Cretin's best team in a long time and this should be a very good game, possibly a preview of the section 3AA final.
Hopefully they can keep it clean and avoid injuries.

If you can't make it to St Paul, check it out at http://www.msbnsports.net/

Good luck to both teams.

because so many people each year would love to see this game its a shame they play this at Highland. STA has been the better team for quite sometime , this is the first year that CDH can realistically expect to win

Bit of a stretch man. No team should expect to win a game. May be better to say that "CDH can realistically have a chance".

In my opinion it is the best rivalry in the state. Once 2015 comes around, it'll be really interesting to see if CDH and STA get put in the same football district. After all, that is where the rivalry began and those games would bring a massive attendance.

These are always fun discussions. I figure that most fans will admit that Warroad - Roseau is the best rivalry in the state. Of course, fans of other teams will have their team's favorite rivalry. I guess I've been living under a rock for the last 20 years because I didn't even know this was a rivalry. It makes sense now that I think of it, but I wouldn't have placed it in the top 10 rivalries.

I'm assuming you haven't been to any of the games, I'll just say that these teams really, really don't like each other

It all stems from the fact that both STA and CDH (back when it was just Cretin) were the Saint Paul military, all-male schools.

We hate each other for the obvious reasons of who is tougher, and for the sake of tradition. STA is now the only all-male, military school in the state I believe.

CDH - STA

For about 80 years the two schools were 2 miles apart.

As discussed almost every year, the rivalry is in everything they do. Many rivalries around are just in one sport or a handful. I wouldn't claim it to be the biggest, but longest standing is quite possibly true.
It is big, and probably top 5 in the state, but to say that one rivalry not connected to another is "bigger" you need to define what that means and it seems to be quite arbitrary.

This article discusses what will possibly happen in football including bringing back "storied rivalries like Cretin-Derham Hall vs. St. Thomas Academy."

Seems you are right. It was there when I made the thread two days ago.
Quite odd.

Do you know this for sure? As of right now, the St Thomas website doesn't have info on it.

As far as the rivalry goes, it is definitely a good one. Wouldn't say it is the best in the state. With STA now in AA and currently in CDH's section, the rivalry could become fantastic. WBL Hill is so good because of the postseason effect. Having one team end another's season just about every year makes for bad blood to become worse.

Highland has absolutely NO parking at all to handle this game, bundle up and plan on a frustrating parking experience down near the old Ford Plant (now a vacant wasteland future Condo complex). I'm kidding but not by much..a few blocks

STA owns CDH for years, so this isn't exactly a barn burner game that could go either way, STA should be and is a favorite going into this matchup. CDH has struggled with teams with speed..look for STA to run North-South in this game and put plenty of pucks on net.
I don't know what the score will be but the shots will be in the range of
50-20 in favor of STA. My guess is the Edina/EP scores are indicative of where this game should finish..5 or 6 to 2 STA and 3 or 4 of those will be on the PP
