Top ranked Hopkins falls
Wow! Fair to say this was a mild upset in my opinion. All the credit to Wayzata. Looks like they out shot the state's top ranked team almost 2-1. surprised me as I had Hopkins winning the state title. Love to hear some game analysis from anyone that was there.
Was there. The following is my opinion.
Trojans had more shots for the game. Trojans had more shots in each period but scoring opportunities were clearly more for wayzata in the 1st and arguably Hopkins in the 2nd and 3rd. I would guess that the bye did not help with the Royals start and was a boost for the Trojans.
Trojans were the better team in period 1. Had a great goal (well executed pass from behind the net by Shaver right to the tape of a girl cutting to the net and had a great finish) and a not great goal (sort of a scrum in front and a puck got under or the goalies legs).
Royals were better in period 2 (more scoring chances but not shots) with a goal by an 8th grader on the Rogers line and a ripped shot by Rogers that hit the post. Rogers came out of the penalty box with :06 to go in the period and got a pass at the red line with :03 to go and a breakaway. :03 more and she might have tied it.
Royals had more scoring chances in the 3rd (different than shots in my mind) but just could not put it in. Had a couple of modified breakaways and at least 1 shot just over the net that the Trojan goalie did not see. Trojans hung on and weathered the storm.
It's too bad someone had to lose in this game OR game #2 with Knights vs Skippers.
Section 6 is a tough section. It's hard to imagine it NOT being section #6 vs the Hornet/Eagle winner for the state championship. But that's why they play the games!

Yup.
Wayzata just took it to Hopkins in the first, who looked surprised. Royals battled back in 2nd period, and Nina Rodgers was in alone with under 2:00 left to tie it and Wayzata goalie stoned her.
But Wayzata looked stronger and faster. I thought in both games the right team won, but I'm more biased about the second game.

I will give a shout out to some classy people that came up short tonight in 6AA. Nina and her Mom stuck around after a tough loss and were quick to congratulate BSM parents that they knew. And there were a couple Tonka parents that showed class as well. The reality is the hockey gods can go your way one night and not the next or your way one year and not the next. So, hats off to those that find a way to lose with class. Sometimes that can be very difficult.
Great win! Nothing sloppy...not luck involved. Look forward to watching more 6AA hockey Friday night!Nimrod wrote:I will give a shout out to some classy people that came up short tonight in 6AA. If this is the case then I would guess the two finals back to back this Friday night at Ridder arena is must watch hockey, set to be a great night of hockeymassalsa wrote: Section 6 is a tough section. Just a heads up: the Gopher men host the Michigan Wolverinesallhoc11 wrote:If this is the case then I would guess the two finals back to back this Friday night at Ridder arena is must watch hockey, set to be a great night of hockey

6PM - Wayzata vs. BSM @Ridder
8PM - Michigan vs. Minnesota @Mariucci
8PM - Edina vs. Eden Prairie @Ridder
Good idea to get there early!

Edited 2/13/14 to correct start time of Gophers/Michigan men's game

MNHockeyFan, I imagine that you will figure out a way to watch the entirity of all 3 games!MNHockeyFan wrote:Just a heads up: the Gopher men host the Michigan Wolverinesallhoc11 wrote:If this is the case then I would guess the two finals back to back this Friday night at Ridder arena is must watch hockey, set to be a great night of hockeyon Friday night at Mariucci next door, and depending on when fans arrive for the girls' game(s) at Ridder, parking could be a real issue. The schedule is:
6PM - Wayzata vs. BSM @Ridder
7PM - Michigan vs. Minnesota @Mariucci
8PM - Edina vs. Eden Prairie @Ridder

The Gophers and Michigan actually start at 8 PM - second game of the BTN double header. I wonder if the Mrs will let Jr and I go early on Valentines day so we can see BSM-Wayzata.....MNHockeyFan wrote:Just a heads up: the Gopher men host the Michigan Wolverinesallhoc11 wrote:If this is the case then I would guess the two finals back to back this Friday night at Ridder arena is must watch hockey, set to be a great night of hockeyon Friday night at Mariucci next door, and depending on when fans arrive for the girls' game(s) at Ridder, parking could be a real issue. Last time I went to a game at Ridder there was a men's hockey game, a women's hockey game AND a men's basketball game. There is plenty of parking, but you may have a bit of a walk.
Hopkins and Wayzata are the same team. Great defense and solid, but not overpowering offense. To win against either all you need to do is slip in a goal and hold on (not easy). The Wayzata win comes as no surprise to me. Wayzata vs BSM will be fun to watch (I'm heading in early). If Wayzata can score they have a real chance to go to state. If you don't give the BSM forwards any open space they can't score. They are not good at grinding out ugly goals. But if you don't stay on them all the time they make you pay.

Such a dilemma! What's a MNHockeyFan to do?sinbin wrote:MNHockeyFan, I imagine that you will figure out a way to watch the entirity of all 3 games!

I've made an executive decision that I will go see the Wayzata/BSM game at 6:00 and then walk across the alley-way for the Michigan/Gopher contest. Hate to miss the Edina/EP battle, but I think that's going to be my best option.
