What? 3 straight state championships (and ranked No. 1 for some of this season) and the coach claims the team does not have much "star power".
Nothing against Sydney Baldwin, I'm sure she is a very talented player. However based on that rational the Mounds View girl (standing next to Sydney in the photo) is a better candidate.

I believe the coach was referring to this year, not the three years when they won those titles without the same level of "star power", as he put it. Their No. 1 ranking earlier this season was based in part, I think, on the "carry over" effect from those previous years when they won those titles (some other team(s) were going to have to show they were better). This year's squad still had talent and depth, but they were younger and could no longer rely on the big scorers up front that they had in the years prior (which the stats bear out). That's why it was so important for them to have a great defender in Baldwin. She was called upon to play great, and she certainly did answer the call. Tonka lost 5 D1 players from last season to graduation, so I believe that was the reference to "star power" of last season. I think Baldwin was much more of a "carrier" this season compared to an "equal" amongst many D1 players last year. Nothing against Mounds View or their players, but they would have been seeded #6 in 6AA. Tonka may have over-achieved somewhat this season, finishing rated #3 in KRACH (or choose an alternate objective ranking system), so that's a fairly successful season, individually and collectively.
