Hockey teams you hate...teams you love. For fun.

Post by sparty »

Hate:
1. Duluth East - ever since the Apple Valley Eagles beat 'em in The Game.
2. Hill-Murray - for many reasons not appropriate here
3. St. Thomas Academy - AA losers this year...yay!
4. Breck - afraid of AA
5. Benilde - private factory that steals from Wayzata/Minnetonka
6. Eden Prairie - everything factory in every sport
7. Warroad - only because Roseau has bigger balls and AA title
8. Totino-Grace - because they're the next Class A menace

Love:
1. Moorhead - can't they please win one title?
2. White Bear Lake - ditto. Another cursed orange & black team.
3. South St. Paul - plenty of appearances...no championships. Painful.
4. Jefferson - my baby blue.

I don't hate any team. Yes, I do like some more than others, but hate is too strong a word. None of them is evil or ever caused me any physical harm. Mental anguish, yes, but that was not directed at me personally.

But sparty, I need to ask, what's with the love affair with perennial losers? At least nobody can accuse you of jumping on a bandwagon...just enjoy good hockey when you see it.

Moorhead - Hate: Arch rivals of Elk River who would win all section games in 7 overtimes in the mid-90's. Love: 0-7 in championship games. Also love that when it came to a real championship game, the Spuds left their skates in their hockey bags & let ER win 8-1 (not to mention a holiday tournament championship game that same year, which ER tied it with about 17 seconds remaining & won in OT). But, Arch rivals are what make sports great, and make winning & losing so much more emotional, and unfortunately this is a rivalry that has fizzled over the years.

Elk River - Love: A lot of great teams circa 1995-2005, and some of the wildest hockey fans during those years. Hate: Unlawful dethroning of Tony Sarsland. The Rogers/Zimmerman split. It divided the talent pool, and Elk River hasn't been the same since it happened in what, 2005 or so. Zerhban. Seems like he single handedly changed the direction & history of the program when his undisciplined actions led to Tony's untimely departure, then as soon as that happens, he leaves the program himself. Was this an inside job? I wonder if he actually grew up in Moorhead...

White Bear Lake - Love: 0-27 in first round of state tournament. All the entertainment of the state's best rivalry during games with Hill-Murray.

Lakeville North - Love: They're doing it old school in 2014, with a trio who has grown up, and played together forever (though they're brothers so it almost doesn't count). Hate: Seems like they've just got a path that's way too easy. They've had zero road blocks to get to the semi-final state championship game, and even now, they face a mediocre (though playing very well in the playoffs) Eden Prairie. Credit to Roseau today, they played them tough, but they're not even a top 15 team. Also, they have a goalie the size of Luongo.

Wayzata - Hate: They have a goalie the size of Luongo. So was Dingman. What kind of HGH do they give their goalies in this town? Love: Frytag and Zimmer.

Osseo - Hate: 1 Cinderella game to take out Paul Martin's 1999/2000 Elks, then they disappear into a foggy mist & are never heard of again. Sarsland claims that was the best team he ever coached. Love: nothing

Duluth East - Hate: to take out a nice baseball bat to beat a horse that's not even recognizable anymore-the home field advantage used in the playoffs. In the history of all sports, home field has the advantage. Granted-if you want to be the best & win that highly coveted state championship hardware, you have to be able to go to the seventh circle of Hell & beat Satan himself-though he'll probably have Boogaard on his first line punching your face in while you do it. It's no excuse to lose, but it's historically in sports, a big advantage, and they keep winning with it. To my knowledge, the only team who has home field advantage past the first round of playoffs. Love - The entire basis of their organization. The Greyhounds. Named after a freakin' bus because they're so die hard about this game, they travel everywhere, all the time to play it. Nothing but love & respect for that.

St Thomas - Hate: Absolute bullies of class A for way too long. Completely unacceptable. Love: The minute they challenge someone their own size, they lose.

Hill Murray/Edina/Eden Prairie/Benilde - Love: These green and red teams that all outsiders love to hate, this outsider chooses to love. Cake is freaking delicious, come on, everybody! Try it, I swear you're like it. They're perennially so good, and so entertaining to watch. Other teams may be from time to time, but you can always show up at their games and be wowed by someone on the ice. Don't get me wrong, that doesn't mean I'd ever wanna hang out with these geeks after the game. Maybe they are spoiled rich brats, I have no idea. Don't really care. Cause I highly doubt I'd enjoy having a snobby Zack "we just want what's fair!" Parise over for dinner either, but I cheer on the Wild.

On that note-Pro hockey - hate. It's so anti-climactic after high school season is over. The difference between watching people play to win happy emotions, versus playing to win the most money, is uncanny. I'll still watch it, and tip over a cop car if the Wild ever win a Cup, but I'd rather see my favorite high school team win the state tournament any day.

Hate: All modern student sections. Maybe I go to too many games, but it's sickening to see that if anybody shows up at all, those who do show up-every student section saying the exact same things, over and over and over. I know technology & modern media have destroyed the imagination & engraved a fear to be different, but my God, to all you kids: no one is going to look at you funny or be upset if you say something new, original & creative. You won't get any facebook dislikes, I promise. I know you're paranoid about things like that. What's the discussion when thinking of what to chant? "Ok guys-what are all the other student sections saying this year? ... That sounds good, let's do that!" *loser nation! loser nation!* "Ok that was great! Now what else are they doing? ... Ok, that idea sucks, but lets do it anyways so we don't have to think of our own!"

Love: Wes. Anybody know the story behind this guy? I think he's from St. Paul. I always say hi to him, but that's about it. He's the Sid Davey of high school hockey, and should be treated as such. The Vikings give Sid all kinds of perks, fly him out to Patriots games (though maybe that was covered by Moss), but they treat him like royalty. Wes should get free admission into all games & free nachos and soda.

I love my old neighborhood schools: White Bear Lake, Coon Rapids, White Bear Mariner and Kellogg (Little Canada).
From the tranquil shores of Lake Vadnais...
