Girls Hockey Hub

Post by panpan111 »

Although I do thank the Star Trib for their commitment to Boys & Girls Hockey with the Hub I do wonder why Blake is featured so frequently. We have 120 Girls Teams in this State that all have a story to tell. Is there a relationship there I am not aware of?

Not sure if there is a relationship-- but it is much preferred to there being nothing about hockey

The ST is very unbalanced with their coverage in all sports.

They try and expand readership with articles about various suburban programs.

The primary reason I believe is that Blake, Benilde and others that receive more coverage than they deserve is that they have a pro-active public relations effort with their athletic departments, and communications teams, writing a steady stream of story suggestions about individual players and their teams. Schools spend on marketing now so it can also be viewed as part of their effort to grow admissions. We didn't see much of that previous to the last 5 years or so. They have staff in those positions where most schools never thought of a proactive PR effort to have their communications team crank out press releases and story suggestions. The ST is not developing the story ideas, or even writing them, on their own.

If you'd like to write a story about your team and send it to Hockey Hub I'm sure they'd be happy to post it. I think somebody associated with Blake, Breck Edina, Stillwater and Lakeville South just isn't afraid to send stories in about their teams. It's too bad there aren't more people sending stories in.

Ok, no. This is simply not true. Especially when many of the articles begin with and include game time play by play. The online broadcasts tend to skew toward a certain group of teams as well.

It's kinda like LPH and their obsession with BE.

My name is Jake Lunemann and I have been running the stats side of the Girls Hockey Hub since 10-11 while working on the Sport Ngin side. Here is some insight I can give on the content you see (or don't see) on the Hubs.

Starting partway through last season, Sport Ngin started providing content to the Hubs. This is usually the game stories and top games of the week articles that you have seen since about January of last year. The Star Tribune still typically will write any feature stories, Q&A's, or special pieces of content and they also are fairly involved in the games that are covered in any given week. They are always very receptive to any story ideas and you can send them to Paul Klauda who is the preps editor and makes most of the content decisions for both print and online. If you have something notable from a specific game, you can call that in after the game (888-764-2797) and our scores staff can submit it to be in the next day's roundup in the print edition.

A couple of other things to note. Farmington girls have been writing their own game stories all year. Teams are welcome to write and post news on their team pages and if they are game stories, we can post them on the opposing team's page and the conference page as well if it is applicable. Also, if you are active on social media, hit up the writers on twitter. They are usually fairly interactive and you can pass along story ideas in that way as well.

Let me know if you have any Hub questions and I can do my best to answer them.[/code]

So media coverage is dictated by teams that have an organized press effort? Often a paid communications position.

That's called fake news.

Oh come on. Nobody is expecting hard reporting on this site. Pretty much just feel good stuff, and any exposure of the sport is good, isn't it? Send in your own story if you want. By the way, the boys' site is no different.
