In addition to Ovaltine, genetics, and hot moms Edina has a number of other reasons why they are again a great team.

Disclaimer - I've watched Edina 8 times this season and am not an Edina homer, just a fan of good hockey.

Elite 1st Line (Malmquist, Wait, & Mismash) - No offense to the Poehling Brothers, but this is the line I want on the ice if I need a goal to win it in the last minute. They have 44 goals and 73 assists between them. Malmquist and Wait are elite talents. They are in the right spots at the right time. Malmquist can take things over individually if needed.

Parker Mismash - Despite the elite talent, Mismash is what puts the first line over the top. He has great hands, doesn't panic with the puck, and finds the open guy with ease. More importantly, he relishes the agitator role. He checks, hooks, slashes, chirps, then scores and that pisses the opposition off. It goes over the line at times, usually incites rage in opposing parents, and puts him in the box but it also creates opportunities for his team.

Style of Play and Depth - Edina plays an up-tempo and physical game with all lines. Most teams cannot keep up with this. At times the 2nd line will matchup with the opposing 1st line, allowing their 1st line against the opposing 2nd line. Their 2nd PK unit features and 3rd and 4th line winger. After the opposition has expended their top line energy on the power play, the 1st or 2nd line for Edina is fresh and on the ice against the 3rd line. Over time, these advantage wear down an opponent.

Coaching - There's not much to say here other than they have one of the best coaches in the state with a proven track record. He knows what to do to put his team in position to win.

Defense - This season there isn't a dynamic player like Tyler Nanne, but they are solid. Sam Fuss has a sneaky little back door play on the power play that will result in goals, but other than that they seem to let the forwards to the offensive work and focus on shut down defense.

I'm sure there is more, but this is what stands out to me.

How has the goalie Boe been? Is he capable of being the difference in a tight game?

I think Fuss is criminally underrated. Everyone talks about the offense, but the defense is one of the best in the state with basically an unknown cast.

Probably no other AA team has kept everyone they played to 3 or less goals in a game. They average 1.88 goals against a game (only behind North to my research) while playing a tough schedule.

I've seen Edina play 4 times.

I think Edina has nice 2nd & 3rd lines, especially for playing at a fast pace as was noted above, but I think in terms of scoring, this year's team is a bit more reliant on their big guns than in past years. In past years, a player could have nothing on the score sheet for a particular game & someone else would pick up the slack. It wasn't necessary for Hurley or Malmquist to get a goal because a Fidler/Munson/Bellows could pick up the slack. This year, if they're going to win big games, Malmquist & Wait are going to have to factor in the scoring. At least that's my opinion.

However, they may be Edina's best top line over this current dominant run, and I'm including when Lee & Everson were there. Malmquist & Wait make so many sick plays in tight spots & on the rush. Them on a simple 2-on-2 often times turns into a great scoring opportunity.

The D is a bit more unsung, but definitely an anchor. Agree with above; not quite the dynamic individual play as last year, but definitely one of the top units in the state.

I haven't been wowed by Boe. I don't think he's a sieve by any means, but Lakeville North would most likely have an edge in that regard. Then again, that was kind of the case the past two years & both Benjamin & Rohkohl more than answered the bell (Benjamin particularly in the title game).

They can be beaten, but I don't see it happening in sections. I don't see Jefferson doing it, and will be particularly tough for either B'Ville or PL on the Mariucci sheet.

What happened to Pugh on back end? I think he was a frosh on the chip team from last year.

Heard he had a concussion before the season and is out for the season. I haven't heard anything on his future.
