Rematch State Championship game

Post by gitter »

With only a few weeks left in the regular season, and the stars possibly aligned, will we see a rematch of the 2014 State Championship game this year?

What is known:

Though no guarantees exist for either team to make the Tournament, both Edina and Lakeville North would appear, on paper, to have the best odds of returning to State. If they both do return, barring any late season collapses, they would be slated for the #1 and #2 spot, thereby paving the way for the potential rematch.

A look back in history has shown this to happen only 3 times in State Tournament History (if my eyes did not fail me on Lee's site, and apologies to any Class A fans...I did not include your tournament, just as I have not included the all-Private Tournaments prior to 1975):

-The last time was 1985 and 1986, when Burnsville and Hill-Murray clashed, Burnsville winning both games.
-Prior to that was 1963 and 1964 when St. Paul Johnson and International Falls met, with that series split.
-The first time was 1949 and 1950, between Eveleth and Williams, with Eveleth sweeping both.

So with that said, will this year be the 4th in Tourney history? What better time to pontificate and debate....

Don't think they both will make it to the X.
If so, don't think both will make it to the finals game....

Oops, that's what I am hoping, not thinking.

It would make for a good rematch.

Bemidji will take out one of them in the quarters.

Other than the top 3, I am not sure any other team has the speed through 3 lines that Bemidji has. So, yes, it is a possibility.
But first, lets get Section 8 behind us.
