Paige Haley

"Red Wing, Minn., native and University of Minnesota women’s hockey player Paige Haley is recovering after suffering injuries in a car crash Friday night.

Haley, a junior for the Golden Gophers, said she was returning home from Duluth when a car in front of her spun out after hitting some ice.

“I put my foot on the brakes. I hit the same patch of ice and spun into a ditch and hit a tree,” Haley said. “(I’m) very lucky. Very fortunate. The car looks horrible; it’s totaled.”

Haley, who was in attendance for Tuesday’s Red Wing/Rochester Century girls’ hockey game, will be in a neck brace for up to six weeks after breaking her C-7 vertebrae. She was also kept overnight at the hospital to monitor some bleeding around her brain.

“I’m hoping to get it off sooner than that,” Haley said. “I still have a few X-rays and MRIs to take care of just to see where I’m at.”

A forward/defenseman for Minnesota, Haley has played in 18 games this season and has one assist.

“Hopefully, I’ll get back to the end of my season,” she said. “That’s what I’m hoping for. If it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t happen.”

Through the ordeal, Haley has seen plenty of support pouring out from the University of Minnesota and at Red Wing.

“My team has been super supportive; my coaches have been amazing,” Haley said. “They came and visited me in the hospital both days. Family has been there, everyone in the community has reached out and been very supportive and helpful. It makes my recovery a lot easier when people are so quick to support me.”

Really good to hear Paige will be OK, and I'm sure everyone here joins me in wishing her all the best.
