There Is about what? 5,000 people here at my best guess. You either keep it here or turn 2,000 people away at ridder.

I would like to see the total number of tickets sold, as a good number of the fans do not stay for both games. I would estimate around 7,500 for both games combined. Certainly not what it used to be.

It's not like Holy Family brings out the crowds either... If Tonka was there instead, I'm guessing it's a more impressive crowd. The legendary section finals there always included 4 huge S/W Metro publics.

Yeah, I corrected my prediction in the 3rd period of the 1st game when you probably had 90% of everyone who bought a ticket in there at one moment. I would say 7,500 tickets sold is a good estimation

EP and Edina student sections were tiny for schools their size

It's also difficult to keep a building full when the second game doesn't start until 8:30 pm on a week night.

I thought the crowd was just fine. Edina probably thought they had the game won before it started to the students didn't show up.

Overall I thought the atmosphere was fine.

I agree; I thought the crowd was pretty good. Better than some of the past few Mariucci finals. I'm guessing in the 3rd period of the EP-HF game, it was probably 7,500, maybe 8,000. There's also a large amount of people standing around the top.

Even if it was lower (7,000), what other venue in the Twin Cities could handle this? Your only option at that point is probably going single game at Ridder.

As for the students for EP & Edina, that's really nothing new. They've never really seemed to bring a ton for their size.

Yeah, it's a tough call. It would be perfect if Ridder could hold 1,500 or so more but I think that you have to keep it at Mariucci for the crowd size when the first game is wrapping up. Hopefully whatever has caused the change in attendance over the past 5ish years reverses soon. Would love for it to get back to where it was at least 80-90% full for the duration of both games

I'm sure it's been discussed before on here but just out of curiosity, what do people think is the cause in the downturn in attendance? I haven't been able to figure it out.

I'll throw these out as POSSIBILITIES, in no particular order:

- Social media (where the young in particular love to spend their time)
- Decline in school spirit, especially at the huge high schools
- Star players leaving early
- Cost (ticket + parking was $22 last night)
- Games being streamed for free

Games being streamed I would definitely agree with, although being out of the state the past couple years I hated having to watch the games online and not be there in person, such a better view of the game and experience when you're there.

Social media I have also considered but to me the student sections don't look too much smaller than what I remember them being back in the 2008ish range to me the biggest difference seems to be in the casual fan that isn't coming to watch.

One thing I've wondered, and I have no way to find out if this is true, but has there been an influx into Minnesota of out of staters moving here that don't have the community connection that they used to?

Play the games on Friday night like they use to do at the Coliseum, and the place would be packed. The second game runs to late on a school/work night.

I agree but these games have been played on a Wednesday for a while and haven't been a problem always. Still I agree I would like to see them played on a Friday and think that would help some.

There were more than 7500 people there last night. Based on the number of people who just came for 1 of the 2 games I would estimate over 9k tickets sold easy.

I attended both sessions. I do not have a kid playing boys hockey and I am not affiliated with any of the teams. I just wanted to see a couple of good hockey games and was not disappointed. The crowd was smaller at the beginning of the 1st game and at the end of the 2nd where fans of the two teams were the predominant make up.

Student section for EP and Holy Family were decent size, with HF students really getting into the cheering. Wayzata Student section filled up an entire section and then some- they had some fun. Edina student section was not nearly as large.

2 good games with some last minute opportunities to send them to OT. HF really moved the puck in the final minutes but couldn't quite put it in. Middelstadt was impressive. After slamming into/getting crushed into the end boards in the 1st, he looked dinged. In the 2nd I thought he was and then he just took off- hands are as fast as his feet. In the 3rd he made some moves that were slick and then deftly slid the puck weak side to a teammate who was probably surprised it made it- didn't put it in though.

Wayzata -Edina was equally entertaining. Wayzata played a great defensive game with transition. Wayzata goalie played like a phenom and made some saves that probably should have been in the net.

My only disappointment was being a 218 guy was that the Wayzata-Edina game allowed one of the teams to advance. Had to go with Wayzata because they played a disciplined game with skill, and they are not Edina (Sorry Hornets)

How do the Edina white jerseys stay so white? New jerseys a couple times a season or is there a booster that owns a cleaner? They were crisp.
