DEast and Tonka

Post by elliott70 »

DEast was supposed to be top 3.
Can they compete with Tonka?
Is Randolph washed up?
Karl and Lee feeding us a bunch of bull?

Who wins?

Randolph and the boys will out SOG Tonka by 25 shots. But does that get them a win, tie, or loss. I’d like too see a W by the Hounds and 218 puck.

I'll go 4-2 Tonka as well. Skippers are really clicking right now and Greyhounds have to fight for their wins.

will go with the same 4-2 score. Randolph will have East ready for the rubber match in St. Paul

St. Paul? What. I don’t get it. Oh. You mean the state tournament! Ah ok. I get it now. That’s what the wink is for, right? Kool

This will be tricky to figure out. Garret Worth has woken up and is on a tear right now with 5 goals in 2 games I believe. He tends to score in waves having a 3 game streak with 2 goals a piece then missing out on the Centenial game. He scored again in the DM game and put 3 up against Lville North and 2 against Blaine. The down side is this is game 2 of a southern swing for East having played Stillwater the night before.

Look for Randolph to roll the hounds lines a bit more on Friday and maybe sit his top 2 lines if the game gets beyond 2 goals diff, in an effort to save some legs for Tonka.

Stillwater may not be as tough as the last few years but they will give the Greyhounds a battle on Friday. I don't see the top two lines getting to sit out.

Hounds could very well have a +50 SOG in this one. Running time for the Hounds. Note: See Edina vs. Bears thread. Edina and Hounds flex their musckles.

Book it. Kniven's prediction is:
* Duluth East takes around 50 shots
* Duluth East wins at running time

I'm on the other side here. Should be a very good game. I suspect Minnetonka wins, but even if D East comes out on top I don't see more than 25 shots. Aside from one shift, Skippers held Edina to just one shot in the entire second period.

Let's revisit your prognostication after this one is in the books.

DE seems to take a lot of soft shots to try for rebounds, so it will come down to if DE can break the puck out. DE needs their goalie (whoever gets the start) to make some big smart saves to start the game. They need confidence in their netminder in order to try to press the puck up the ice. Confidence in the goalie will allow for some higher pressure breakouts at that will be the key. And if Worth can score but that's been touched on and a given.

I’ve got the feeling the Hounds have the edge due to bigger size and section 7 style physical play. And also proven neutral and D zone trapping plan , to slow down Tonkas speed and clog passing lanes .

The last time DE had a team that had not lost a game, and had the state buzzing about their potential, it was Minnetonka that was the buzz-kill. I believe it was a Hockey Day Minnesota game in 2012....played inside due to warm weather. The Skippers obliterated East 9-3.

Not a prediction, but trying to create a little more of a story-line between two of the state's top teams, meeting again. Can DE flip the script from 2012?

Excellent history Schotzy! I didn’t see the Hounds Tonka game . But I remember the Hounds / Crimson game where each had maybe 1 loss only at the time . Drove from West Metro up to MG , we got there about 6 pm and they started turning people away not too long after that . At the X that year, all 4 quarterfinal underdogs won, don’t think it ever happened before or since?

😀. That’s a big trip for me Elliott! From West Metro to Northwest Metro! Hard to get outside my BSM, Braemar, EP, Pagel, Chaska/Chan bubble . You know, first a guy has to think about it for a few hours , then decide 169 or 494, then remember what time to leave home . Quite complicate for an old guy . Somehow it all came together. Great game and great season 2012 ! Jake Guentzel senior year, who could have known!

If I remember correctly that was the second meeting that year. The first was in the Schwan’s Cup Gold Final where Duluth East won convincingly (6-1 or maybe 7-1?). This game should be a fun one no matter who wins.

The game these two played last year was a 6-0 blowout for Tonka in Duluth. DE had played Hopkins at home last year winning 6-0 the night before but the 7-0 burn should be in these kids minds this year.

Recent Tonka/East history, since we're on the topic...even years are at Pagel, odd in Duluth.

2017: Mntk 6, DE 0. Ugly game that was basically over from the drop of the puck.
2016: Mntk 6, DE 1. Also ugly, with East taking overlapping major penalties that caused the wheels to fall off.
2015: 4-4 tie. A somewhat encouraging result for the Hounds in their last regular season game before going on that great playoff run.
2014: DE 4, Mntk 2. East's only win at Pagel in recent memory.
2013: DE 4, Mntk 2. If memory serves, a very entertaining game with an EN, and the other three DE goals from Meirs Moore on the PP.
2012: Mntk 9, DE 3 in the famed Hockey Day debacle; DE 6, Mntk 2 in a dominant performance in the Schwan Cup Gold final. The two games were complete reversals of each other. They were the two best regular season teams that year, but Tonka didn't make it out of sections and the Hounds, of course, lost to Lakeville South.

I agree the 4th line, which has been seeing fairly regular ice time, will likely see more ice on Friday just to keep things fresh. Worth has looked good lately (I missed the LN game but thought Blaine was probably his most complete effort to date); it's just a matter of making that line jell, as we've touched on in other threads.

My real question with this one is how East will handle an opponent like Minnetonka...while they've played a bunch of pretty good teams, I wouldn't say any of them have more than one line with serious scoring talent (except when, say, Marshall broke up Stauber and Grannis). The Skippers can roll three, so we'll see how East handles that. We'll also see if the Hounds keep up the aggressive forecheck they've been using all season, and if that can hold up. I'm fairly confident in their breakout based on recent performances, but avoiding odd-man rushes and getting a good performance out of whoever is in net will be the key.

Looking forward to making the road trip south for this one.

Excellent history Karl!!

And yes, I am going with the Hounds saturday based on aggressive forecheck with size advantage, and also trapping in neutral and D zone

Duluth East had 12 of their varsity playing for the Elite League North this fall. That’s 12 of the best hockey players in 218 skate for the Hounds. I’m sure the junior and senior classes were at state multiple times as peewee and bantams.

And based on that, everybody thought they were going to be dominate and run away with 7AA. Some suggested they were going to be the top team in the state.

Based on their last 5 games, I'm not seeing the domination:

- Tied Cloquet who WBL beat rather convincingly. Plus they had to score with 4 seconds left to get the tie.
- Beat Cent by 2 goals and needed the last 2 in the final 5 minutes to get by them.
- Slipped by DM in OT. Again needing a late goal in the third to tie it up.
- Escaped LN with 2 power play goals to win by a goal.
- Tied a Blaine team that has struggled this year.

Not to mention they were lucky to escape WBL with a tie, if their goalie didn't play way over his head in the OT. And WBL had how many Elite players this summer? (1)

OVERRATED.

I always have to laugh at what short memories people have. You have to go back quite a few years to see East be dominant, (not dominate) in the regular season. I don't think Randolph is too concerned about what happens before the playoffs.
