This was probably the least fun I've had watching a hockey game, least of all one between these two, in a long time. Holum was good, yes, but East was penalty-prone and often appeared out of sync. I am not a fan of the 2-minute/1-unit power play East has featured in its past two games, as the top players looked gassed and in once instance that led directly to a penalty. They have 4 good lines, use them. In spite of the penalties, Burnson's breakaway ahead of DiGiuseppi's goal with 3 minutes left was probably the first thing GR had resembling a halfway decent chance. There was some ugly chippiness from both teams, including a brutal hit in the last 2 minutes that took out Hunter Paine from East...if he's out for any length of time, that will be a big blow. The hit and resulting major penalty took all the air out of the building after Rapids' goal, and East played its 4th line, probably to keep the big guns safe.

In the end I suppose Rapids can take something out of a close game with East, especially since QRF makes this a highly likely 7AA quarterfinal. But they will need a little, you know, offense to make that interesting. Probably half of their 10 shots were long clearing attempts or something of that ilk. East just needs to flush this one out of the system and move on to an interesting one with Brainerd on Friday.

Lest I sound hopelessly down, I thought the broadcaster on Mesabi Community TV was quite good. A one-man show who can keep it going all game and always gets kids' names right is impressive.

That all sounds icky. I really hope Hunter is ok. I can’t stand when kids get hurt on an ugly play especially when the results of the game aren’t in question. Rapids plays in Cloquet tomorrow night in the barn. I just hope we win and get out with no new injuries. We are finally close to being 100% healthy for the stretch run....
