Brimsek Finalists
Along with the Mr. Hockey finalists (posted elsewhere), the Brimsek finalists were also announced for the state's top senior goalie:
Ben Garrity, Rosemount
Atticus Kelly, St. Thomas Academy
Ben Garrity, Rosemount
Atticus Kelly, St. Thomas Academy
Maybe they're the clear cut front runners but surprised they couldn't do a more comprehensive list. imho under consideration (apologies for the lack of formatting):

Kelly should win it.
Matty Fitzgerald and Holum they got completely snubbed!
Fitzy at .920% on a bad team
Holum at .907 on the worst Grand Rapids team in school history.
WHAT A FLIPPING JOKE!!!

Serious question is there anybody on the evaluation committee that can explain how 2 senior goalies post plus 90% averaging 40 shots per game (Holum) and 30 per game (Fitzgerald).
Those kids constantly got barraged by bang bang shots all season long.
Got that off my chest. I feel good now

Oldtimer, how about the FLake goalie as well.
Peterson has played 21 games, seen 618 shots, with 929%
Fritzgerald has played 22 games, seen 598 shots, with 920%
I think the area code and jersey color might play a factor in this as well.
My vote has to be Garrity now, has seen as much rubber as the above two on a team he has carried.

Fitzgerald and Holum are both excellent goalies playing on very average or poor teams. This award is for the best goalie, without these 2 on their respective teams they win very few games. Holum especially, he won them games they shouldn't have and kept it out of running time in others where it should have been.
But then again, the north vs south bias seems to be prevalent.

Good call out. The Peterson kid deserves the cred for his teams success no doubt. I don't wish to slight any kid deserving the award to include the 2 finalist. I thought in years past there was more than 2 finalist and the kids were invited down to St. Paul to the banquet in order to represent their respective schools. Understand there is one winner but we have a good group of kids here that should get recognized for a job well done.GoalieDefense wrote:Oldtimer, how about the FLake goalie as well.

He was the second best goalie on his team last year. So this is an overstatement.Hockeylogger wrote:Holum is the best hs goalie that I have seen in a long time, he could be a diamond in the rough for someone who takes a shot on him.
That said - he is the best goalie in the state right now. He shouldn't have just been a finalist, he should have won the award.
Yeah, I hear what all you guys are saying, Holum and Fitzgerald have been great, but so have the kids who were nominated for the award. Kelly and Garrity have the best stats of anyone in the state this year.
Garrity of Rosemount is 1st in the state for save percentage with .945. He is 2nd in GAA with 1.43 and he is 4th in wins with 18.
Kelly is 3rd in the state for save % with .939, 2nd in GAA with 1.32 and also tied for 4th with 18 wins.
Holum and Fitzgerald are not top 10 for any of those categories
Hjelle is tied at 6th in save % with .931, but not top 10 anywhere else
Lenonard is 7th in GAA with 1.57 and has 17 wins, but not to 10 in save %.
Peterson from forest lake having a nice year is tied for 10th in save %, but no other top 10 stats.
Holum might be the best goalie in the state, but it is not easy to prove that when you are on a bad team. Most people think Carey Price is the best goalie in the NHL or at least one of them, this year he is not even close to winning the Veniza because his team is bad and has bad stats.
I think they got the right two guys.

Good team, bad team. North vs. South. AA vs. A Who you know vs who you don't know. Maybe all are factors so in an attempt to compare apples-to-apples here are the stats from the Elite League where all the goalies played on good teams against good competition.

Wasn’t happy with Mr Hockey top 10 , so may as well chime in here too
Think Brimsek ought to expand finalists to 3 or 5 , Since Minnesota goalies are expanding their overall skill and North American recognition level so much in the last 10 years
Having said that, I’ve been watching Holum and Fitzgerald at the elite League and varsity level for so many years that I can’t even keep track of them all.
One of them should’ve gotten the nod for a finalist slot , Hard to pick between the two but I would have given it to Holum.
As far as the two metros, Kelly gets my vote.

Do you think Stejskal taking over as the #1 GK last year and leading GR to the State Championship may have hurt Holum's stature for this award?WestMetro wrote:Wasn’t happy with Mr Hockey top 10 , so may as well chime in here too

Definitely agree to expanding the finalists list. It doesn't make sense to only pick two. There's definitely more than two goalies that belong in the top tier conversation.northwoods oldtimer wrote:GreatWestMetro wrote:Wasn’t happy with Mr Hockey top 10 , so may as well chime in here too
