Post by JerseyDave »

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – "University of North Dakota Head Hockey Coach Brad Berry announced today that former Fargo Force and Wayzata High School captain Mark Senden has committed to the Fighting Hawks and will join the program’s incoming freshman class for the upcoming 2018-19 season. Senden, a 5-foot-10, 185-pound forward, spent the past two years with the Force in the United States Hockey League (USHL) and captained the team to a Clark Cup championship in 2017-18."

It's weird he's been verbally committed since 2014 and the school just announced it? Maybe a hockey recruit doesn't sign an NLI until after juniors? Or maybe Senden kept his options open or the school waited? Not sure how it works. Usually schools announce their recruits after they sign an NLI. NCAA coaches are not allowed to comment publicly about recruits before then.

And here lies part of the problem with recruiting. A kid can verbally commit basically anytime they want, and the school they committed to is not bound by anything until the NLI is signed. A school can keep kicking the commit down the road until they are about to age out and then they can either say "Sorry, we don't have a spot for you" or "We will take you, sign your NLI."

Take a look at Chris Heisenberg's recruiting spreadsheet and take a look at Michigan. As it stands right now, they have 16 verbal commits for the 2019 season. Now some of those could get pushed to 2020, but Michigan already has 7 verbals for 2020 (and 3 for 2021 and 1 for 2022). Not all 16 of those players are going to end up at Michigan, some will get squeezed out and hopefully they see the writing on the wall before it is too late and can start the recruitment process up again and land somewhere.
