Team Southwest
I am guessing it should be Metro West. They had their tryouts this last weekend, I believe. Metro West is a team to try and reduce travel for a few teams and make a 9th team for easier planning of weekend games

Re: Elite II
The Elite II West Metro team is not gonna be any good. I saw the tryout and was not impressed, it will be hard for them to compete with the other teams with there skill and ability that they have to work with.

Re: Elite II
Crabs, be mindful of generalizing these young kids. With that said, I was at the tryouts also and was quite surprised at who was NOT in attendance the final night. I think a couple of strong kids were actually cut early who, in my judgment, would have made the team much stronger. Perhaps it is because I know the level of play that many of these kids are at and also felt their tryout was as strong or stronger than some who were allowed to stay the 3rd night. But, here we go again with why some kids get chosen and others not.

Where are they from?
My guess would be that some that are cut are from programs that are not hosting the tryouts?

re: where are they from
Hard to beleive any players from the 1st cut would actually have been contributors to the final roster.
While politics might play a role for players on the bubble I really don't think that would be the case for players from the 1st cut.
Who were these players and where were they from? Monticello, Becker, Rogers, or some other powerhouse program?

Re: re: where are they from
Toepull, you have shown your hand when you talk about "some other powerhouse program". Are you one that believes if they aren't from Wayzata they shouldn't pass beyond the first cut? Are you one that believes if they are from Cathedral they should be released over someone from Elk River or even Buffalo...the whole A vs. AA thing?

This tryout was odd in that it was very slow moving. There just didn't seem to be speed in the game on any of the nights. If you are an athlete that does well with tempo, you may not have the tryout you had hoped to exhibit. It is tougher to play slower than it is to pick up the pace, so I was disappointed in what I saw in general.

Bottom line: It's tough for evaluators to pick from 2 or 3 skating sessions...they do the best they can with that time frame and some statistics that are thrown at them, but most evaluators will admit that mistakes are made....and some were made this time around, in my opinion. Believe what you will.

Re: re: where are they from
I'm not sure where this is coming from:

Quote:
My guess would be that some that are cut are from programs that are not hosting the tryouts?

I don't think the tryouts are "hosted" at any particular site, they are just renting ice, right?

I thought it was odd that the West Metro team held tryouts so much earlier than the rest. The article in LPH said tryouts would be held between the 20th and 30th. Maybe some players, that weren't invited, thought they had time to get a spot at tryouts only to find out they already started or were over.

It also sounds to me like Toepull was probably cut early on and felt he was better than some that moved on.

Re: re: where are they from
RLSTARS- I think you mean PUCKHEAD89 was probably cut early and felt he was better than someone who moved on.
Also
"Maybe some players, that weren't invited, thought they had time to get a spot at tryouts only to find out they already started or were over."
If a player wasn't invited they shouldn't be at the tryouts anyway should they? Maybe I don't understand how the process of selection for tryouts work.

PUCKHEAD89- your comment that it's tough to evaluate players in 2-3 sessions is a different tone than your previous post. You still didn't comment on who should have been on the final roster but was cut after the 1st session. As far as "tipped my hand" I was trying to get at exactly what you are implying, were the players from the 1st cut from well established programs or from weaker programs. I was not making an implication that players from weaker programs shouldn't be chosen.

Re: re: where are they from
My point on tryouts is that this league is for players from 9 to 12th grade. That means some of the 10th graders as well as 9th graders were playing bantams last year. As I understand it , the West metro team is new this year and did the coaches have time to visit and scout all the bantam teams that can play on the West Metro team? Probably not.

I may have misunderstood your post on which teams did the first cut players play for.
Quote:
Who were these players and where were they from? Monticello, Becker, Rogers, or some other powerhouse program?

sounds a little sarcastic. The teams you mention can have players who are worthy enough to play in this league and the Elite league. Sounded like you were saying they were garbage players from bad teams that didn't deserve getting passed the first cut. If I'm wrong, I ask for your forgiveness.

Re: re: where are they from
Wasn't intended to be sarcastic just trying to understand the details of the players who were cut on the 1st round who according to puckhead89 deserved to not only make it beyond the 1st round but also should have been on the final roster. Curious if there was a correlation between those cut and what program they were from.

Weak programs typically have 1-2 good players but are often lost in the shuffle. That's a real downside from being a good player coming from a weak program.

Also I believe that the high school coaches recommend players from their respective teams for thr tryouts. I don't think any advanced "scouting" is done by those associated with the league.

Re: re: where are they from
Yes HS coaches can nominate as well as parents.

I can tell you from our experience, my son has improved dramatically over the summer the last few years. So much so that he has gone from the middle to lower half of the pack to the top. My previous post to you, toepull, was partly to defend the reason for a parent to nominate a player, not just the HS coach. In the past two years, my son comes back for our associations tryouts and I'll have a few local hockey people ask what we did over the summer because he has devoloped much further than anyone else has and it shows on the ice. We are from one of those programs that will have a few good players that gets lost in the shuffle.

Now can a HS coach see the progress made over the past 5 months that these last year bantams have made? The only thing the coach can go by is what they remember of that player from last year. I'm sure that some, not all, coaches barely wached the bantam teams. Boys at this age are maturing and developing in what seems like just over night.

Re: re: where are they from
Toepull, I see that you are fairly new to posting, so you probably don't know that I have posted opinions about evaluators in the selection process and my support for them in general. The tone in my posts and my position have not changed since chatting on this board.

But I support the kids the most. This is why I will never answer your question about who I think should have stayed and from which program they come. It is unfair to the kids who may be reading these posts.

I was offering to the readers of this board, as many of us do, my thoughts on what I saw 3 nights in a row. If you were there, and choose to disagree with me, fine...that's America. But I don't like the ramblings of some posters suggesting that the only athletes worth a hoot are those from the big name programs. I will fight that battle vehemently with anyone. If that is not what you meant by your response to my post, then I misunderstood your "tone", because it certainly sounded as though you were poking fun at the smaller programs, something I have become intolerant of reading or listening to.

I can assure you that I am not an athlete who was cut from the first round of this tryout, but I blush at the suggestion you think I am so young...thank you.

Re: re: where are they from
Oh and Toepull, one more thing....you stated:

"Curious if there was a correlation between those cut and what program they were from."

I can also tell you that cuts were made from both A and AA schools at the first cut....so, my point again is, evaluators do what they can, in the amount of time that they can, with the information in front of them....but mistakes can and will occur...those who evaluate know what I mean.

Has the Metro West team been selected? Does anyone know who made the team yet?

Re: Elite II - Metro West
Team roster has likely been finalized, but not all athletes have been notified, so roster won't be posted. Maybe they won't post roster until after all Elite II tryouts have been completed and all teams are set.
