Raiders girls' hockey head coach Josh Colvin steps down

Colvin (top row) was an assistant under former head coach Jeff Corkish for several years before succeeding him as head coach in 2016.

Hastings Raiders girls' hockey coach Josh Colvin is stepping down from his position here at the end of his third season. Colvin became head coach in 2016 after the departure of Jeff Corkish, who he had served as an assistant under for much of the previous decade. During his three years as head coach, Colvin consistently emphasized leadership, toughness, competitiveness and the importance of the basics.

His teams went 23-48-3 in the regular season over those three years and 15-16-1 in the Metro East Conference, with their best finish being in 2016 when they went 7-4 and took second to Hill-Murray. The Raiders were 0-3 in the section playoffs over that time, losing to Eagan in 2016-2017 and this past season and Apple Valley in very close matchup in 2017-2018.

The girls' hockey program is experiencing quite a bit of upheaval after this past season with Colvin stepping down and long-time assistant coach Steve Benson retiring after over two decades with the team.

Yes, we received an email today from EJ that both he and assistant Ogie are both resigning to spend more time with families as each has 3 boys in hockey.

Not really, He did a great job this year. WBL should have never been In St. Paul. They had the advantage of a weak section and a weak HM squad. This group of seniors was the highly touted youth group that made multiple trips to state at U-12. His mistake was not keeping a handle on the youth program during this senior classes run through the youth program. I got this from a friend who was on the assoc board during the time these kids were coming through. The board was busy dealing with the Vadnais rink issues and the Girls Director at the time was allowed to run things unchecked. The cupboard is bare because a small group of parents were able to do whatever they wanted and chased a lot of families away. If you look at the roster of this years HS team and compare it to the 12 A team that this senior class is a part of. You will see that there are only 4 maybe 5 players left 3 that were major contributors this past season.

The WBL coach made sure his senior goalie and senior skaters were in a position to win the Section Final. He managed his situation well and put Frank in a position to win that game for the team. I think he did a fine job this year.

It's not difficult to out coach the hm coach, but, it seems that out-coaching Woodbury is not so easy...

The 12u roster comparison should be to last years team...(2017-2018).. The biggest loss at high school would have been Hansen going to CDH...she was 2 grades above the other players,but, with late birthdate for association play. She is in her 2nd year at Hamline and doing well

Bet you don't know why Hansen decided not to go to WBL? Same reason every other decent player has. Would you want your kid to work on Power play and penalty kill every day with very little skill work ? If your not on the PP or PK would you want your kid to be split to the other side of the rink and just screw around the whole practice. It's a gong show. That might be acceptable in TX but not in MN.

13 kids on roster 1 Junior who doesn't play anymore. White Bears Junior class was buried on B teams as first year 10's and 12's I looked back in 10's WBL had 3 teams the with a total of 8 losses between the three teams. The failure of WBL girls hockey lies directly with the Youth association and its leadership as they put short term youth wins over long term development of the overall program.

I'm not sure what point you are trying to make with that? or are you just trying to make my point? My point is none of those girls got better at hockey when they reached the High school level and yes those girls were good when they were younger. My other point in all of this is we need to stop saying to ourselves it's just girls hockey it's no big deal. It is a big deal to more and more young ladies every year. That being said, coaches need to be helping them be become better hockey players to go along with all the I'm a nice person it's all about the fun and I get a stipend from it.

Also to note. 6 girls on that roster you set forth Quit playing hockey for WBL when they hit High school. That's almost half. That's too many girls to loose for a girls High School team.
