Streaming For Dummies

For a few different reasons, I will likely be catching some games via streaming on the interwebs. (Now, I feel like I should be in the Progressive commercials; on not becoming your parents. go ahead take a shot at me, I'm fair game.) But I suspect I'm not the only one. If I'm interested in a particular game, how would I find the stream? Is it typically free? Or what might it cost? Anything else I need to know?

There are a number of options and I'm guessing there will be even more this year due to spectator limitations, some will cost $, others may be free, it varies.

Historically, MNHockey.TV, YHH, Up North Hockey, Prep Spotlight. etc. have all streamed various games with announcers, there is also the Live Barn feeds from many rinks (no announcers). Many teams also have their own streaming equipment and stream their home games (and select road games), these typically also have announcers.

The HS Hockey broadcasts topic at the top of the forum is helpful.

This forum in the pinned topics above and keep an eye on it (Forum, Twitter, FB, etc.), sometimes streams are scheduled weeks in advance, but a large % of the time they are added within a day or two of the event. Watching Puck has also consolidated a list in the past on his website, not sure if he's planning to maintain that or not this year (no small effort).

Most of the games streamed by MnHockey Tv will have automatic cameras, and the majority of the games they are doing will have a play by play announcer. For a select few important games, there will be a color commentator

A few games will have manual cameras, either a camera feed or an iphone feed.

The WBL school district signed an exclusive agreement with prep spotlight (paid stream) so unfortunately The Horn is dead. Lots of other schools have deals with them as well

Interestingly, I see HM out there as well on prepspotlight.tv But I'm not buying any package until I see that they are actually going to stream games from Aldrich. Their package is $59.99 for the season. I wonder if were seeing the end of free streaming...

SCC Sports covers Mahtomedi, Tartan, and White Bear Lake. It isn't exclusively hockey, but will have games mixed in to their broadcast schedule. Games will be streamed on their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/scctv and YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/scctv. They can also be watched on Comcast Channel 19 in the Northeast Suburbs. These are the games they'll be covering in January and February, pending there aren't any covid issues or PrepSpotlight coverage overlap:

February 23 - White Bear Lake vs. Forest Lake

Livebarn.com streams from some rinks. The Big Nine Conference’s calendar page even gives codes for some games.

Waiting until we get some home games. My guess is they will do the Hill home games all season. And I think you can buy a game individually, but likely not until after it streams. So that isn't a great option. I did see someplace the Chaska game should be streaming, but I have to find it again. Might be the pay site on mnhockey.tv

And why on earth would anyone bother to set up a camera at Harding arena???

Its a darn shame that Mn Hockey TV, and Live Barn, and NFHS, and others can't all get together and put one package out there. Would make life so much easier finding games.

Technically it's two cameras right next to each other, but yes, one angle. You have two options:
Auto - the camera follow the action, it does a decent job but not great. Occasionally it misses the beginning of a breakaway as the camera figures out the action is going the other way.
Pan - this is like a fishbowl view so you see the whole rink at once. I prefer this option. You can zoom in and out, pan the camera yourself.

No commentary, of course, but the microphones pick up everything.

Also nice about Livebarn is everything is "on demand" for 30 days, so you can go and watch a game later. You can also save/share 30-second clips, or if you pay for the premium membership (few bucks more a month) you can download 30-minute clips.

PS - I don't work for LiveBarn, just a fan of it after using it for a couple years.
