Re: Single A top 20 2-14-2021
Class A Rankings 2.14.21
No seismic changes in the rankings this week, as there weren't many contests between ranked teams, and no real upsets to be found. Perhaps the biggest statement game of the week took place in 1A, and we had a few entertaining Class A vs. AA matchups, including perhaps the best game of the season so far. Enjoy!
1. Hermantown (10-0-0) [LW 1]
W 5-1 @ Duluth East, W 5-3 vs Grand Rapids
The Hawks passed their most difficult week of with flying colors. The East contest was over almost before it started, with Hermantown netting two early goals and coasting from there. Rapids was much more competitive, and Hermantown needed a late score and an empty-netter to seal the win. Zam Plante was transcendent, with two tallies among his four points, and found Pionk for the game winner. There's only one game on the docket, but it's a big one against their only real threat within the section.
Next: Tue vs Denfeld
2. Gentry Academy (8-0-0) [LW 2]
W 7-1 vs Johnson, W 6-1 @ Blake
The Stars "survived" their most likely challenges of the regular season, in both cases feeling out the opposition for the better part of a period before steadily pulling away. Gentry is relentless in pressuring their foes, with crisp passes and heavy forechecking. It's hard to find a weakness with this group, but Hermantown remains ahead by a hair based on their stronger schedule (Rapids in particular). Neither of this week's opponents should provide much resistance.
Next: Tue @ Breck, Thu @ Owatonna
3. East Grand Forks (5-5-0) [LW 4]
W 3-1 @ TRF, W 6-5 vs Roseau
The Green Wave navigated the week without a blemish, but not without some difficulty. The Prowlers put up more of a fight than anticipated, and the Roseau row was a wild affair, with seven collective goals in the first ten minutes of the second stanza. EGF has now crawled back to .500, and with that has advanced one spot up the rankings each of the past two weeks. They were without the services of Landon Parker Saturday, which will bear watching, but the lower lines chipped in nicely with scoring. The coming week is basically a deserved respite.
Next: Thu vs Detroit Lakes
4. Warroad (5-2-2) [LW 3]
W 12-0 @ LotW, L 1-2 (OT) @ GF Red River
The Warriors' week started out well enough, routing their neighbors in Baudette. But Warroad gave away their Friday game, surrendering the tying goal with eight ticks left, and the Roughriders capitalized on their second life. Once again the offense failed to produce against a quality opponent, despite 31 shots and a penalty shot. On deck is a rematch with archrival Roseau, who will be perturbed after the loss to EGF and a definitive Warroad victory a few weeks ago.
Next: Thu vs Roseau, Fri vs Crookston
5. Mahtomedi (6-3-0) [LW 5]
W 2-1 @ Orono, W 3-0 vs Delano
The Zephyrs survived their their three-game tour of 2A unscathed, though not without some adventure. Mahtomedi needed a late and somewhat controversial goal Thursday to best Orono. Is this an elite team? No, but the Zephyrs possess the greatest equalizer in Class A with Dardis between the pipes. Some good news: Ryan Berglund is back in the lineup and scored twice versus Delano. Bad news: the upcoming schedule is brutal, with five straight AA foes ranging from good to excellent.
Next: Tue @ StMA, Thu @ STA
6. Duluth Denfeld (3-0-1) [LW 6]
W 7-4 @ Cloquet, W 7-1 @ Duluth Marshall
The Hunters definitely have a modus operandi in the early going: shoot first and ask questions later. That works fine against most of their schedule, even Cloquet, though the Jacks made things interesting in the third period before an empty-netter sealed the deal. But that strategy is unlikely to hold up against Hermantown, who has a potent offense of their own, coupled with a stifling defense. Coincidentally, the Hawks are lurking in the wings, and the two teams will square off twice within nine days.
Next: Tue @ Hermantown, Sat vs Int'l Falls
7. Orono (6-2-0) [LW 7]
W 5-1 vs LDC, L 1-2 vs Mahtomedi
The Spartans had a nice week, taming the Dragons with ease before giving Mahtomedi all they could handle. That Thursday night tilt was a penalty-filled affair, with the two squads combining for 38 minutes of infractions. Both goalies were outstanding; Brock Peyton saved 42 Zephyr shots, but unfortunately let one trickle in late to break the tie. Orono's schedule lightens up this week ahead of a rematch with Delano.
Next: Tue @ Minneapolis, Thu vs New Prague
8. Little Falls (6-1-1) [LW 8]
W 6-1 @ SCC
With just a single game, the Flyers had a short week, and they made quick work of Cathedral, racing out to a 3-0 lead in under three minutes and cruising from there. The scoring depth is impressive, with two lines that can fill up the stat sheet. Little Falls should coast into the big sectional scrap with Sartell.
Next: Thu vs Prairie Centre, Sat @ Sartell
9. Fergus Falls (7-1-0) [LW 9]
W 9-1 @ Willmar, W 5-2 vs Detroit Lakes
The Otters devoured two overmatched foes, with the offense continuing to pile up big numbers. Players like Cole Zierden and Isaac Johnson are enjoying breakout campaigns, already eclipsing their output from a season ago. The highlight of the coming week is the Thursday evening rematch with Alexandria, and a chance to avenge the only blemish on their record.
Next: Tue vs SCC, Thu @ Alexandria
10. Sartell-St. Stephen (4-3-0) [LW 11]
W 6-0 @ Bemidji, W 2-0 @ River Lakes
The Sabres bounced back impressively from their Covid hiatus, posting two shutouts. The Bemidji score was inflated by three goals in the final minute, but the Jacks were coming off a sound defeat of Alex. The offense isn't going to put up big numbers, but the defense and goaltending have been stingy. The Tuesday tussle with the Warriors kicks off a formidable four-game run, with matchups versus the three other 6A contenders.
Next: Tue vs Brainerd, Sat vs Little Falls
11. Dodge County (6-1-1) [LW 15]
W 10-0 vs Albert Lea, W 4-3 (OT) @ Mankato East
The Wildcats are rolling now after stumbling somewhat out of the gate. The comeback triumph over East puts Dodge County firmly in the driver's seat for the top seed in 1A, though that didn't do much for them last season. At 3 points per game, Lamb's output isn't exactly lacking, but his supporting cast has stepped up their collective games recently. With a soft schedule over the next few weeks, Dodge County should continue to rack up wins before encountering any real threats.
Next: Tue @ Faribault, Sat vs Mayo
12. Mankato East (7-2-0) [LW 12]
W 4-3 (OT) vs Faribault, L 3-4 (OT) vs Dodge County
The Cougars had a rough week, starting with a narrow escape from a Faribault team they perhaps overlooked. The Dodge County loss was painful, as East has built a 3-1 lead midway through the second period, and then watched it evaporate down the stretch. Liffrig was held off the scoresheet for the only time this year. This week East will have a chance to avenge their early season loss to a decent Northfield team.
Next: Tue @ Winona, Sat @ Northfield
13. Alexandria (4-4-1) [LW 10]
2-5 @ St. Cloud, L 1-3 @ Brainerd
The Cardinals continued their downward spiral, dropping two more contests to middling AA opponents and running their losing streak to three. St. Cloud tacked on two empty-netters, resulting in a deceiving final margin, but there is still cause for concern. The offense is sputtering, generating low shot totals and few scoring chances. Alex has little time to turn things around before a crucial rematch with the section contender Otters, whom they defeated in the season opener.
Next: Thu vs Fergus Falls, Sat @ SCC
14. Delano (4-6-0) [LW 19]
W 7-2 @ Mound, L 0-3 @ Mahtomedi
The Tigers mauled the White Hawks to register their second straight blowout win, but then ran into the brick wall known as Ben Dardis, halting their momentum. Pinoniemi registered a hat trick against Mound, and has become the fulcrum of the offense. Delano should romp through some lesser competition before returning to more challenging fare next week.
Next: Thu vs Waconia, Sat vs Jefferson
15. Hutchinson (5-2-1) [LW 13]
W 6-0 @ Willmar, W 3-1 @ New Prague
The Tigers picked up a few wins over unimpressive competition, and needed a late goal (plus an empty-netter) to prevail over New Prague. Their only real victory of note is 2-1 over Delano early in the season. Hutchinson will have a chance to prove their mettle this week, facing off against their archrival and a red-hot Holy Family squad.
Next: Tue @ LDC, Fri vs Holy Family
16. Tartan (5-4-1) [LW 17]
L 1-2 vs H-M, W 4-2 vs Chisago Lakes
The Titans gave Hill a scare, taking a 1-0 lead into the first intermission and goalie Torii Greiskalns making incredible saves throughout the contest. The Wildcats proved to be frisky, with Tartan adding a late tally for the final margin. Chet Bertelsen had a hat trick on his first three goals of the season. The Titans have a home-and-home with a weak South St. Paul team, which should pad their record prior to the home stretch.
Next: Tue @ SSP, Sat vs SSP
17. Mankato West (7-1-1) [LW 16]
T 4-4 @ Owatonna, W 3-0 vs Northfield
Following the stinging defeat to their crosstown rival, the Scarlet managed a tie and win against the Big Nine's two best AA teams. Caleb Cross has been a workhorse in net, playing every minute, and has posted sparkling stats (1.30 GAA, 94.6%) in the process. West's schedule should be smooth sailing over the next few weeks.
Next: Tue @ Austin, Thu vs Century
18. St. Paul Johnson (3-3-0) [LW 20]
L 1-7 @ Gentry, W 5-4 @ Minneapolis
The Governors had a strong first half in both of their games - one being understandable and the other less so. Johnson managed to hang around with Gentry as well as anyone has so far, trailing 2-1 midway through the second before the wheels came off. The Govs then raced out to a 5-1 lead over Minneapolis, but watched it slowly melt away and just barely escaped. This team is not deep, and conditioning may play a factor. Johnson should have an easier time of things against two of their St. Paul brethren.
Next: Wed @ SPA, Sat vs Highland Park
19. Breck (5-3-0) [LW NR]
W 5-2 vs Cathedral, W 6-0 vs Lourdes
The Mustangs gallop into the rankings after victories in two games that would have been great matchups a decade ago. The return of Caden Morgan to the lineup in the past five games has made a noticeable impact. One of the best young defensemen in the state, he has already amassed 11 points. Breck will be thrown in the fire this week, with two of their toughest tests paying a visit. Blake has been vulnerable, so perhaps the rivalry game will be interesting.
Next: Tue vs Gentry, Sat vs Blake
20. Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato (4-2-2) [LW 14]
L 1-5 @ Orono
Following a second straight lopsided loss, the Dragons are hanging on to the final spot by a talon. Their only major resume point is a draw with Hutchinson, but it's hard to justify a huge gap between the two given the recency of that game. Speaking of which, round two between those teams will take place Tuesday evening, with the winner likely to claim the top seed in 3A.
Next: Tue vs Hutch, Sat @ Kennedy
Out: Mound Westonka
Others Considered: Monticello, Armstrong/Cooper, Providence Academy, Minneapolis

Re: Single A top 20 2-14-2021
QRF is pretty much broken for single A. The top starts out OK, but things fall apart from there. I’m not sure what kind of system rates Northern Lakes and Red Lake Falls ahead of Mahtomedi, but that algorithm has serious flaws.
Re: Single A top 20 2-14-2021
It is a little man in a dark room with a transistor radio.
He does not know that section 1A does not know how to play hockey.
(Settle down it is just a joke.)
