A Rankings for 12/5/21

Class A Ranking Week #2 (12/5/2021)

1. Hermantown (7A) (2-0-0)
Past Week Results: W 6-5 BSM, W 4-1 Hill Murray
Upcoming Schedule: 12/10 @ Wayzata, 12/11 vs. Rosemount
The Hawks got off to a very nice start to their season with a win over a very good BSM squad. The Plante brothers put on a show up front and Ty Hanson was stellar on the blue line. The Hawks followed that up with even a better performance with another tough matchup and solid win vs. AA Hill Murray. The Hawks have speed and depth all throughout the lineup. They could very well be the top team in the State but they certainly let it be known this weekend they are king of the mountain in Class A. More good AA competition for the Hawks this coming week against Wayzata and Rosemount.

2. Mahtomedi (4A) (3-1-0)
Past Week Results: L 1-3 CDH, W 5-0 #6 EGF
Upcoming Schedule: 12/9 @ Hill Murray, 12/11 vs St. Thomas Academy
The Zephyrs opened the week vs AA powerhouse CDH and Ben Dardis showed again why this team will be a tough out at State despite being thoroughly outplayed the entire game the 50 save effort by Dardis made it a tight game throughout. The Zephyrs finished the week back in Class in style as they claimed a convincing 5-0 win while being outshot 40-19 over a good EGF squad. This week the tough schedule continues as they take on AA Private Powers HM and STA. I won’t be shocked if they knock off one of these two this week.

3. Warroad (8A) (3-0-0)
Past Week Results: W 4-3 Bemidji
Upcoming Schedule: 12/10 vs. Rock Ridge, 12/11 vs. Grand Rapids
The Warriors again find a way to win a tight game vs a solid Bemidji team. Again this is not the type of score we were anticipating from the Warriors. Gardner led the charge with 2 more goals and they got some of their youngsters involved but they need to get Shaugabay going who has been way too quiet through 3 games on the scoresheet. I am bullish with Warroad. I know others are down on them but I really think they can be the best team in Class A but I think they right now are below the Zephyrs. They will have a chance next weekend to show more as they get a struggling Rock Ridge and then they face a very good AA Grand Rapids in a fun Saturday Showdown.

4. Delano (2A) (3-0-0)
Past Week Results: W 8-1 Buffalo
Upcoming Schedule: 12/9 @ Chanhassen, 12/11 vs. #17 Mound Westonka
Delano was very impressive in their only game this week buzzing the Bison of Buffalo. An 8 goal effort is big for a normally more stingy offense that was led by Brown and Paulson. The defense looks stout and the Tigers are out a 3-0 start something that has not been the case in recent years. They hit the road to take on up and coming AA Chanhassen before returning home to play a pesky Section 2A Mound Westonka for their home opener.

5. Fergus Falls (6A) (3-0-0)
Past Week Results: W 4-1 #12 Northern Lakes, W 12-0 Willmar
Upcoming Schedule: 12/7 @ Sartell, 12/9 vs. Sauk Rapids, 12/11 vs. Hutchinson
The Otters got off to a great start to their week and in Section 6A with a big win over Northern Lakes. This one was tight through two periods but a 3 goal outburst in the third helped the Otters get a key Section win. They followed that up by taking care of business vs 6A Willmar to give themselves a nice start in Section 6A. I moved the Otters up to 5 as they had a more impressive result vs. common opponent Detroit Lakes then EGF did. This week brings a notable game vs. Sartell who beat Alexandria to try and compare after that they take on Sauk Rapids and a competitive Hutchinson team at home.

6. East Grand Forks (8A) (2-2-0)
Past Week Results: W 5-4 OT Detroit Lakes, L 0-5 #3 Mahtomedi, W 6-2 St. Cloud Cathedral
Upcoming Schedule: 12/7 vs. Crookston, 12/9 vs. Grand Forks Central
The Greenwave’s 3 game week got off to a rocky start as they looked to be facing another upset down 2 to 4 late in the third however, Jaksen Panzer’s late game heroics scoring his 4th goal of the game to tie it at 4-4 with 30 seconds left allowed EGF to get to OT and survive a surprising scare from 8A foe Detroit Lakes. After that scare their backend issues showed up as they were beaten handily 5-0 in game they controlled pace of play and outshot the Zephyrs 40-1 . They were able to get a much needed win over St Cloud Cathedral but there are some glaring issues for the Greenwave but I still can't drop them below 6 yet even moving them below 5 seems low. This week is an 8A game and the start of the Grand Forks Series games.

7. Little Falls (5A) (5-0-0)
Past Week Results: W 4-1 St. Cloud Cathedral, W 5-2 vs Princeton, W 9-1 Becker/Big Lake
Upcoming Schedule: 12/7 vs #9 Alexandria, 12/9 @ Pine City
The Flyers had a great week in Section 5A it started with a nice road win over St Cloud Cathedral. This one was tight through two periods but a 3 goal outburst in the third helped the Flyers pull away for a critical section win. They continued their solid week with 2 more good Section 5A wins vs. Princeton and BBL. Next week brings a good challenge for the Flyers as they face old 6A nemesis Alexandria at home who they haven't beaten in over 6 years will be curious to how this match up goes and then they finish up the week with 5A Pine City.

8. Duluth Denfeld (7A) (2-2-0)
Past Week Results: L 2-9 Gentry Academy, W 5-2 East Ridge
Upcoming Schedule: 12/7 @ Hibbing, 12/9 vs Cloquet
The Hunters got demolished by Gentry on Friday night and the back end issues are becoming concerning here for a team that had that question mark coming into the year. They were able to rebound and get a win over AA East Ridge on Saturday however, they are trending in the wrong direction. This week they stay up north with a big Section 7A game vs Hibbing and then they finally get to play at home vs Cloquet. These results will get a better feel for where the Hunters stand in the northland.

9. Alexandria (6A) (1-1-0)
Past Week Results: L 2-3 Sartell, W 4-1. River Lakes
Upcoming Schedule: 12/7 @ #7 Little Falls, 12/11 vs #15 Minneapolis
Up and down opening week for Alexandria who got off to a slow start to their year in Sartell. They fell behind 3-0 before making a frantic late game push only to lose 2-3 on the road. They did rebound nicely vs River Lakes as they took care of business and won 4-1. This week brings a key matchup with old Section 6A foe Little Falls. The Cards have owned this series of late vs the Flyers and they follow that up with a good Minneapolis team coming to town on Saturday for their home opener.

10. Northfield (1A) (2-1-0)
Past Week Results: L 2-4 Farmington, W 3-1 TRF, W 5-0 Faribault
Upcoming Schedule: 12/7 vs Red Wing
Northfield got off to a rough start vs. AA Farmington they never were able to capture their footing behind 2-0 then 4-1 before losing 4-2. They were able to rebound after that and get two good wins on the weekend. The first was over a good TRF squad and then they were able to gain their first Section 1A win over Faribault. The Monson and Klotz duo upfront looks tough and the Raiders look to continue to roll up front vs. 1A Red Wing this week.

11. Orono (2A) (2-2-0)
Past Week Results: W 4-3 OT Jefferson, W 4-0. #16 Breck
Upcoming Schedule: 12/7 vs. New Prague, 12/9 vs. #18 Monticello, 12/11 @ Totino Grace
Orono got a much needed win over AA Jefferson on Tuesday at BIG. In a game the Spartans dominated, outshooting the Jags 53-22, they still found themselves trailing 3-1 in the third however, they showed grit with a good comeback effort and won in OT. They followed that up with a big 4-0 road statement Section 2A win over Breck. They find themselves back in the top 15 and have 3 more winnable games this week starting with Section 1A threat New Prague.

12. Northern Lakes (6A) (0-1-0)
Past Week Results: L 1-4 #6 Fergus Falls
Upcoming Schedule: 12/9 @ Brainerd, 12/11 @ Becker/Big Lake
The Lightning lost a tough opener on the road in Fergus Falls. They did show though that they are capable of playing with the Section’s top team tied 1-1 after two periods in a very even game. However, the Otters flexed their muscles in the third and the Lightning were unable to counter. Their slow start to the season continues as now they wait until Thursday 12/9 before they take on AA neighbors Brainerd this is a nice addition to their schedule and another good test to see where this team is at early in the year.

13. Providence Academy (2A) (2-1-0)
Past Week Results: W 3-2 OT #14 SWC, W 12-3 Prairie Centre
Upcoming Schedule: 12/7 @ #15 Minneapolis, 12/9 vs Hutchinson
The Lions got back on track this week with 2 wins. The first was critical as they again saw themselves in OT at home vs Section 2A SWC. This time they found a way to win and they followed that up with a sound win over Prairie Centre. This week brings more Section 2A fun as they face a tough Minneapolis team and follow that up with a solid Hutch team.

14. Southwest Christian (2A) (2-1-0)
Past Week Results: L 2-3 OT#13 Providence Academy, W 6-4 LDC
Upcoming Schedule: 12/7 @ Hopkins, 12/11 vs Dodge County
Southwest Chrisitian lost a tough one on the road vs. Providence that could have an impact on seeding down the road. However, they followed that up with a good effort vs. Section 2A LDC. The Stars should get two more wins this week as they take on AA Hopkins and Dodge County. These Section 2A teams are all in a bunch right now in the middle of these rankings.

15. Minneapolis (2A) (3-1-0)
Past Week Results: W 4-3 Armstrong/Cooper, W 5-2 Hopkins, W 5-1 Burnsville
Upcoming Schedule: 12/7 vs #13 Providence Academy, 12/11 @ #9 Alexandria
Minneapolis started their busy week of AA action by defeating Armstong/Cooper in a game where they controlled the flow outshooting the Wings 31-12 it took late game heroics as they scored the game winning goal with 8 seconds left in regulation. They followed that win with a very nice complete win vs Hopkins and finished off the week with a dominant win over Burnsville . This week is a big one for this group. They face the team that sits above them in rankings Section 2A Providence Academy and then head to top 10 Alexandria. We will find out alot about this team.

16. Breck (2A) (0-1-0)
Past Week Results: L 0-4 #11 Orono
Upcoming Schedule: 12/9 vs. #17 Mound Westonka 12/11 @ Blake
Rough Opener for the Mustangs getting handled at home by Section 2A Orono 4-0 then had their game vs. Cotter postponed due to COVID on the Ramblers side. This week sees the Mustangs fall in the rankings as scoring will be an issue and there still are a lot of questions to be answered with this group. They face tough Mound Westonka who sits right beneath them in the rankings and then face their private rival in Blake. Going to be curious to see how they respond.

17. Mound Westonka (2A) (2-1-0)
Past Week Results: L 3-5 Mankato East, W 6-2 Armstrong-Cooper
Upcoming Schedule: 12/7 vs. Chanhassen, 12/9 @ #16 Breck, 12/11 @ #4 Delano
The WhiteHawks started off by dropping a tough one at 3A preseason favorite Mankato East. After that they were able to rebound and get a much needed win vs. Armstrong- Copper. This week is a big early in the year for Mound Westonka as they travel to 2A powers Breck and Delano late in the week we will see how they fare with them to see how serious of a contender they are in a very deep Section 2A.

18. Monticello (5A) (0-2-0)
Past Week Results: Idle
Upcoming Schedule: 12/7 vs. #19 Chisago Lakes, 12/9 @ #11 Orono, 12/10 @ Cambridge-Isanti
The Moose ended up being idle this week due to LDC needing more time after the Dassel Cokato’s Prep Football Title run. This week the Moose look to get back on track vs. some other teams ranked in Class A for note in 4A Chisago Lakes and 2A Orono. Then they finish with a Section 5A Matchup at Cambridge. The Moose will need a good showing this week to stay in this poll.

19. Chisago Lakes (4A) (2-0-1)
Past Week Results: W 8-0 Sauk Rapids, T 2-2 Osseo
Upcoming Schedule: 12/7 @ #18 Monticello, 12/9 @ Becker/Big Lake
Led by Seniors Ryan Schmidt and Nick Helland the Wildcats continued their impressive start blowing out the Storm from Sauk Rapids however a tie against Osseo is very concerning but at this point in the Class A poll it's just throwing things out there for now.. This week brings a game that will give us a better understanding of the Wildcats early. They face off against Monticello, a team that sits just above them in the poll, should be a great barometer game for Chisago Lakes to see where they truly are in Class A.

20. Luverne (3-0-0) (3A)
Past Week Results: W 7-6 OT Marshall, W 13-1 Redwood Valley, W 10-1 Waseca
Upcoming Schedule: 12/10 vs. New Ulm
Yes I know this is a stretch but I like to have every section represented in the top 20 and honestly it's very hard once you get to this point. I thought let's reward a team that averaged a whopping 10 goals a game this week. With both Mankato’s looking down and very beatable Section 3A is wide open. Huge game this week down in the Southwest corner vs. New Ulm the winner had the earlier edge on the Big South title and possible number 1 seed in 3A. Have we returned to the RollCardsRoll era… Most likely not but a 30 goal week I thought deserved a mention for a week at least.

Dropped out of the rankings- Rock Ridge, St Cloud Cathedral, Simley

Class A Section by Section Outlook Week #2 (12/5/21)-

Section 1A (11 Teams)
Team- (Overall Record)
1- Northfield (10)- (2-1-0)
2- New Prague (1-1-0)
3- Albert Lea- (1-0-0)
4- Red Wing- (2-1-0)
5- Rochester Lourdes-(1-1-0)
6- Faribault- (1-3-0)
7- La Crescent- (1-2-0)
8- Winona (1-1-0)
9- Waseca (0-2-0)
10- Austin (0-1-0)
11- Cotter (0-1-0)

Section 1A Overview- Still very early but Northfield appears to be the frontrunner to start. Their main challenger is an interesting team in New Prague who went to OT with an up and coming Shakopee this week. Red Wing is off to a nice start and Albert Lea is always solid. Rochester Lourdes will be in the discussion; those seem to be the top 5 for now.

Section 2A (11 Teams)
Team- (Overall Record)
1- Delano (4)- (3-0-0)
2- Orono (11)- (2-2-0)
3- Providence Academy (13)- (2-1-0)
4- Southwest Christian (14)- (2-1-0)
5- Minneapolis (15)- (3-1-0)
6- Breck (16)- (0-1-0)
7- Mound Westonka (17)- (2-1-0)
8- Hutchinson- (3-0-0)
9- Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato- (0-1-0)
10- Waconia (2-2-0)
11- Bloomington Kennedy- (0-1-0)

Section 2A Overview- Such a deep tough section. Right now there is still so much in the air. Honestly after Delano you can order 2-9 in many ways. It's crazy to think Hutchinson at (3-0-0) probably should have been in the top 20 as an 8 seed in 2A. This section is going to be a fun one to watch all winter

Section 3A (10 Teams)
Team- (Overall Record)
1- Luverne (20)- (3-0-0)
2- New Ulm- (2-0-0)
3- Mankato East- (1-3-0)
4- Mankato West- (0-2-0)
5- Marshall- (1-2-0)
6- Windom (1-1-0)
7- Fairmont- (1-1-0)
8- Minnesota River- (2-1-0)
9- Worthington- (0-1-0)
10- Redwood Valley (1-1-0)

Section 3A Overview- As jammed packed tough 2A is, 3A is right now wide open. The hot start by Luverne puts them on top for this week but we will find out a lot more facing top 3A contender New Ulm next week. Mankato East will most likely be the top team but they don't play many 3A Teams and they have been up and down. Mankato West looks in rebuild mode that loss to Minnesota River could haunt them come seeding time. Marshall-Windom-Worhtington results will be interesting to watch.

Section 4A (8 teams)
Team- (Overall Record)
1- Mahtomedi (2)- (3-1-0)
2- Chisago Lakes (19)- (2-0-1)
3- Simley- (2-2-0)
4- South St. Paul- (1-1-0)
5- St. Paul Highland Park- (2-3-0)
6- St. Paul Johnson- (1-1-0)
7- Two Rivers- (1-2-0)
8- St. Paul Academy- (0-1-0)

Section 4A Overview- Mahtomedi is the heavy favorite in this section. I don't see any real challengers both Chisago Lakes and Simley had rough ends to their week. Curious to watch who is the best St Paul team. I think it might be St Paul Highland Park which is a great story. Just as the St Paul Johnson numbers and future is a sad story, cheering for them to stay alive as it is such a great tradition.

Section 5A (10 teams)
Team- (Overall Record)
1- Little Falls (7)- (5-0-0)
2- Monticello (18)- (0-2-0)
3- St. Cloud Cathedral- (1-3-0)
4- Princeton- (1-1-0)
5- Mora- (1-1-1)
6- River Lakes (1-2-0)
7- Sauk Rapids (1-2-0)
8- Pine City (1-2-0)
9- Cambridge-Isanti- (1-2-0)
10- Becker/Big Lake- (1-2-0)

Section 5A Overview- Little Falls jumped into the top seed early but both the top contenders Monticello and St Cloud Cathedral played them tough. After those 3 it’s a tight race as 4-9 could go anyway depending on Matchups. Princeton got a big road win over Mora on Saturday for the jump on the 4 seed for this week but more matchups will come and help clear out the mess.

Section 6A (8 teams)
Team- (Overall Record)
1- Fergus Falls (5)- (3-0-0)
2- Alexandria (9)- (1-1-0)
3- Northern Lakes (12)- (0-1-0)
4- Wadena Deer Creek- (2-2-0)
5- Morris Benson- (1-2-0)
6- Willmar- (1-2-0)
7- Prairie Centre- (0-2-0)
8- Breckenridge/Wahpetom- (0-2-0)

Section 6A Overview- Fergus Falls looks to be the favorite here but again Alexandria will be very tough. The other main contender will be Northern Lakes. Wadena Deer Creek appears to be the best of the rest and there is really not much after that in this small outstate section.

Section 7A (10 teams)
Team- (Overall Record)
1- Hermantown (1)- (2-0-0)
2- Duluth Denfeld (8)- (2-2-0)
3- Greenway- (2-0-0)
4- Hibbing- (2-2-0)
5- Rock Ridge- (0-2-0)
6- Proctor- (3-1-0)
7- North Shore- (0-1-0)
8- International Falls- (0-2-0)
9- Ely- (0-2-0)
10- Moose Lake- (0-4-0)

Section 7A Overview- Hermantown showed this week they could be the best team regardless of class and it doesn't look like anyone in 7A will challenge. However, the battle for 2nd best will be interesting as Duluth Denfeld will need to show more now playing the northland teams. Greenway is off the great start and Hibbing beating Rock Ridge is big for them. Even Proctor looks improved this year to start.

Section 8A (10 teams)
Team- (Overall Record)
1- Warroad (2)- (3-0-0)
2- East Grand Forks (6)- (2-2-0)
3- Thief River Falls- (1-4-0)
4- Detroit Lakes- (1-2-0)
5- Red Lake Falls- (3-1-0)
6- Kittson Central- (3-1-0)
7- Crookston- (0-1-0)
8- Lake of the Woods- (1-0-0)
9- Park Rapids- (2-1-0)
10- Bagley/Fosston- (1-2-0)

Section 8A Overview- This section always comes down to Warroad, East Grand Forks, or Thief River Falls. Right now the Warriors look like the Favorite with the Greenwave needed to improve which they will. TRF is 3 until someone below them in the section beats them. Detroit Lakes is off to a nice start blowing a 4-2 lead late over EGF hurts but shows they should not be overlooked.

12.5.21 Rankings

1. Hermantown (2-0-0) [LW 1]
W 6-5 @ BSM , W 4-1 vs H-M
After observing the first week from the sidelines, the Hawks finally got their season started with a weekend trip to the Champions Classic to tangle with two highly touted AA foes. The Benilde game was probably the most entertaining of the young season, featuring end-to-end action and an epic winner from Zam Plante. The Hill victory was a more muted affair, with Hermantown controlling large stretches of play and avoiding the turnovers which plagued them the prior night. Zam can already lay claim as the best player in the state, and the Hawks may be the best team in either class. They will continue to be tested, however, starting with a visit to the PIC Friday evening.
Fri @ Wayzata, Sat vs Rosemount

2. Mahtomedi (3-1-0) [LW 4]
W 6-0 vs Monticello, W 6-1 @ Orono, L 1-3 @ CDH, W 5-0 vs EGF
The Zephyrs came flying out out of the gate on the opening weekend and handily dispatched two decent challengers. The speed and depth of CDH ultimately proved to be too much to handle, but Dardis kept them in the game with 51 saves. The EGF game was an impressive showing; after surviving an initial onslaught, Mahtomedi put the game out of reach with a three-goal second stanza, including two in the early going. The offensive output has been a pleasant surprise, led by David Wolsfeld and Charlie Drage with five goals apiece. The Zephyrs have a brutal upcoming schedule. They have a stretch of six ranked AA teams and Hermantown starting next week, so their winning percentage is likely to take a hit.
Thu @ H-M, Sat vs STA

3. Delano (3-0-0) [LW 7]
W 4-1 @ TRF, W 4-2 @ EGF, W 8-1 @ Buffalo
The Tigers bucked their trend of slow starts and were the darlings of the opening weekend with a highly successful visit to Northwest Minnesota. Delano followed it up by dismantling their AA neighbors to the north. Will Brown has been the offensive catalyst, as expected, with a hat trick against EGF and six golazos on the young season. Interestingly, the Tigers have rotated goalies in the early going after Huotari played nearly every minute last season. Needless to say, the results have been impressive. The upcoming week features a a test against up-and-coming Chanhassen prior to the first section contest of the year.
Thu @ Chanhassen, Sat vs Mound

4. Fergus Falls (3-0-0) [LW 5]
W 4-2 @ Detroit Lakes, W 4-1 vs Northern Lakes, W 12-0 vs Willmar
The Otters clawed their way to two hard-fought victories before walloping Willmar. The tight DL score looks better in retrospect given how well that team has played, and NL will be a challenger in 6A. Fergus exploded for three goals in the final frame to put away the Lightning. The trio of Isaac Johnson, Michael DeBrito, and Cole Zierden have paced the offense, and the inexperienced defense has solidified to help stellar net minder Ben Swanson. The otters have a busy week ahead, beginning with a trip to former section mate Sartell, who is off to a nice start in 8AA.
Tue @ Sartell, Thu vs Sauk Rapids, Sat vs Hutchinson

5. Warroad (3-0-0) [LW 2]
W 3-1 vs SCC, W 4-3 vs Mounds View, W 4-3 @ Bemidji
The subjects of much preseason hype, the Warriors squeaked by three foes they were expected to easily handle. The Bemidji game was especially tight, as the Warriors needed a late goal to pull out the win. .Gardner and Shaugabay have carried the offense so far, with little contribution from the second and third lines.
Warroad hosts two Section 7 skirmishes over the weekend, with Rapids representing a big step up in quality. The Warriors could be blown off the ice if they don't step up their play.
Fri vs Rock Ridge, Sat vs Grand Rapids

6. Little Falls (5-0-0) [LW 13]
W 6-5 (OT) vs Orono, W 5-4 vs Monticello, W 4-1 @ SCC, W 5-2 vs Princeton, W 9-1 vs Becker
I was down on the Flyers entering the season, which has looked like a major mistake so far. Little Falls has raced out to a hot start, which includes a 3-0 record in their new section and a victory over their most likely competition for the top seed, Monticello. The defense and goaltending were uncharacteristically shaky in the first two contests, but seems to have stabilized, albeit against lesser competition. The trio of Matt Filippi, Hayden Johnson, and second line center Carter Oothoudt have carried the offensive load, including an Oothoudt hat trick against Orono and four goals from Filippi versus Princeton. The upcoming slate features the first of two matchups against long-term rival Alexandria.
Tue vs Alex, Thu @ Pine City

7. East Grand Forks (2-2-0) [LW 3]
L 2-4 vs Delano, W 5-4 (OT) @ Detroit Lakes, L 0-5 @ Mahtomedi, W 6-2 @ SCC
The Green Wave are taking on water, but are still afloat, to employ a bad metaphor. The goaltending situation is again troublesome, but this season they don't have a strong defensive corps to shield them. Trey Ausmus is unfortunately not walking through the door. The Mahtomedi game was emblematic of EGF's struggles; they dominated the first period but couldn't break the Dardis wall, and things fell apart after that. Jaksen Panzer has been nearly the entire offense. He has six goals so far, including four against DL and two in the Cathedral victory. The wave have essentially a warm-up contest before jumping into the North Dakota portion of their schedule.
Tue vs Crookston, Thu vs GF Central

8. Alexandria (1-1-0) [LW 8]
L 2-3 @ Sartell, W 4-1 vs River Lakes
The Cardinals sat on the bench for the opening weekend and proceeded to split their first two outings of the year. The two games were polar opposites, with Sartell holding off a late Cardinal rally and Alex jumping all over the Stars early en route to a comfortable triumph. Brycen Berg and Joe Gronholz accounted for five of the six goals, while senior goalie Gabe Evink picked up the win over River Lakes in his first varsity start. Alexandria has two challenging contests on deck, starting with their former section rival, the Flyers.
Tue @ Little Falls, Sat vs Minneapolis

9. Northfield (2-1-0) [LW 19]
L 2-4 @ Farmington, W 3-1 vs TRF, W 5-0 vs Faribault
Well, it appears that rumors of superb sophomore Cayden Monson's departure were incorrect, which vastly raises Northfield's ceiling. After being held scoreless in the season-opening loss to a solid Farmington squad, Monson figured in all three goals in the TRF win and added three more points against Faribault. Spencer Klotz adds additional offensive punch, and the goaltending has been strong. This team is likely the class of southern MN, but they are unfortunately locked into the Big Nine schedule and won't have many outside tests going forward.
Tue vs Red Wing, Thu @ Faribault

10. Duluth Denfeld (2-2-0) [LW 6]
W 7-6 @ Woodbury, L 1-6 Champlin Park, L 2-9 @ Gentry, W 5-2 @ East Ridge
I have no idea what to make of these results. The Hunters are basically a discount version of EGF, with porous defense and goaltending, but plenty of talent up front. The Gentry drubbing was expected, and the East Ridge win gives me some confidence, but the first two games were a mess. The Woodbury contest featured eight goals in the first, and then Denfeld hung on for dear life after amassing a 7-4 lead. They were never in the game against a mediocre Champlin crew. Junior Martin Hoffman got the start against East Ridge, so perhaps they have found some stability in net. The Tuesday trip to Hibbing will be an interesting test of where those two teams stand in the early going.
Tue @ Hibbing, Thu vs Cloquet

11. Orono (2-2-0) [LW 15]
L 5-6 (OT) @ Little Falls, L 1-6 vs Mahtomedi, W 4-3 (OT) @ Jefferson, W 4-0 vs Breck
The Spartans move up four spots despite the mediocre record, partially due to the teams above them faltering, and partially based on the close loss to Little Falls and the thumping of Breck. Orono scored three goals in the third to take the lead over the Flyers, but surrendered a late goal and let the win slip away. The Spartans outshot Breck by nearly a 2:1 margin and never let the Mustangs into the game. Bradley Walker and Easton Sankey have been the offensive catalysts with four and three goals, respectively. This is a young roster that could round into form as the season progresses. The week ahead has a date with Monticello as the main entree.
Tue vs New Prague, Thu vs Monticello, Sat @ Totino Grace

12. Minneapolis (3-1-0) [LW 12]
L 2-4 @ Hastings , W 4-3 vs Armstrong/Cooper, W 5-2 @ Hopkins, W 5-1 @ Burnsville
The nicknameless team remains steady in the rankings after a decent showing against four AA foes. The Hastings loss was understandable, as the Raiders will be a contender in 1AA. Minneapolis barely escaped A/C despite heavily controlling the game flow, but dominated the two contests later in the week. The scoring has been balanced, with two defenders, Zander Zoia and Drew Pitts, leading the way. Alex Lamont has emerged as the primary netminder and looks solid so far. Minneapolis finally faces some Class A opposition this week, with two ranked teams on the docket. By this time next week we will know much more about this team.
Tue vs Providence, Sat @ Alex

13. Northern Lakes (0-1-0) [LW NR ]
L 1-4 @ Fergus Falls
The Lightning have only taken the ice once so far and dropped that contest, but they did push the Otters hard for two periods before faltering. I totally overlooked this squad in the preseason, but they should again be a contender despite the move to a stronger section. Northern Lakes appears to be pretty deep, and the goalie play was strong. The upcoming schedule is rather soft, as even AA Brainerd is way down. It will be a few weeks before we get a better read on this team.
Thu @ Brainerd, Sat @ Becker

14. Mound Westonka (2-1-0) [LW NR]
W 6-5 (OT) vs Providence, L 3-5 @ Mankato East, W 6-2 vs Armstrong/Cooper
Another team I had unranked coming into this season, the White Hawks head up a parade of Section 2A teams. Mound Westonka has been my rankings kryptonite over the years, bouncing in and out and all around, but I feel obliged to put them here for now based on the head-to-head win over Providence. The Mankato East loss was a bit of a head scratcher, but they responded with a resounding win on Saturday. Max Krebsbach has been a scoring machine, supported by Cooper Kantola and Michael Doshan. The week ahead is daunting, so we will see whether the White Hawks soar or crash land.
Tue vs Chanhassen, Thu @ Breck, Sat @ Delano

15. Providence Academy (2-1-0) [LW 11]
L 5-6 (OT) vs Mound, W 3-2 (OT) vs SW Christian, W 12-3 @ Prairie Centre
I was probably too bullish on Providence, as they started the season by splitting a pair of section games in bonus time. In both cases they tallied late goals to force overtime, but could only carry over the momentum against the Stars. This team can score, but the defense and goaltending are questionable at times. The Lions mauled poor Prairie Centre Saturday, but things become more interesting with two more critical section scraps.
Tue @ Minneapolis, Thu vs Hutch

16. Southwest Christian (2-1-0) [LW 9]
W 3-1 vs Anoka, L 2-3 (OT) @ Providence, W 6-4 @ LDC
The Stars bring up the rear of this run of 2A teams. The Providence loss was a tough blow, and the LDC game was a wild affair in which each team made multiple runs. The scoring has been extremely balanced, with sophomore Jared Greiner sitting at four points and three tied just behind him with three apiece. Greiner scored the game winner against LDC and added an empty-netter for good measure. Southwest Christian next has a couple of winnable games versus middling AA competition.
Tue @ Hopkins, Sat vs Dodge County

17. Monticello (0-2-0) [LW 16]
L 0-6 @ Mahtomedi, L 4-5 vs Little Falls
The Moose have yet to actually win a game, but they hang around based on a strong showing against Little Falls. The matchup with LDC was postponed, so Monticello had the ensuing week off. Chisago Lakes was moved out of 5A, but it is still an interesting matchup, and the Moose will have their hands full with a trip to Orono.
Tue vs Chisago Lakes, Thu @ Orono, Fri @ Cambridge-Isanti

18. Detroit Lakes (1-2-0) [LW NR]
L 2-4 vs Fergus Falls, L 4-5 (OT) vs EGF, W 7-0 vs Kittson
The Lakers took out their frustrations on poor Kittson Saturday afternoon following two close losses to top 10 adversaries. The EGF setback was particularly tough, as DL surrendered two goals late in regulation. It should be smooth sailing for the Lakers this week.
Tue vs Park Rapids, Thu @ Prairie Centre

19. Hibbing (2-2-0) [LW 19]
L 0-11 @ Grand Rapids, L 3-4 @ Cloquet, W 8-4 @ I-Falls, W 4-1 vs Rock Ridge
After being blasted in the season opener, the Bluejackets rebounded by taking Cloquet to the wire and racking up two section wins. Hibbing dominated newly combined rival Rock Ridge from start to finish in an impressive display. Another team with balanced scoring, Keeghan Fink leads the way with six points, and a group of three are just behind with five, including Kasey Kemp with four goals. The Tuesday showdown with Denfeld could be very important for section seeding, and then Hibbing heads way down south for the weekend.
Tue vs Denfeld, Fri @ Mayo, Sat @ Red Wing

20. Breck (0-1-0) [LW 14]
L 0-4 vs Orono
Argh. The Mustangs have only one game under their belts, and it was a stinker. This is a young group; nine sophomores and one freshman are on the roster. They face a big week ahead, with a section contest against a team they haven't faced in several years and and the big rivalry game.
Thu vs Mound Westonka, Sat @ Blake

Out: Rock Ridge (0-2-0) [LW 10], Thief River Falls (0-3-0) [LW 19], Mankato East (1-3-0) [LW 20]

Thanks, you as well. I became a little lazy and burned out toward the end of the rankings, but I figure several of those teams may be out in a week or two anyway.

Youth Hockey Hub Class A Rankings Week #2 (12/5/21)
1- Hermantown (7A) (2-0-0)
2- Mahtomedi (4A) (3-1-0)
3- Warroad (8A) (3-0-0)
4. Delano (2A) (3-0-0)
5. Fergus Falls (6A) (3-0-0)
6. Little Falls (5A) 5-0-0
7. East Grand Forks (8A) (2-2-0)
8. Alexandria (6A) (1-1-0)
9. New Prague (1A) (1-1-0)
10. Detroit Lakes (8A) (1-2-0)

YHH Commentary- Declared Hermantown the best team in the state which is hard to argue. Moved Mahtomedi over Warroad due to more impressive wins but didn't move Warroad below 3 as they are still winning. Delano looks solid 4 and the Falls teams came in 5 and 6 the Otters followed by the Flyers. EGF fell to 7 and are trending in the wrong direction after 2 weeks. Alexandria lands at 8.....

After that lots of options kind of shocking pick of New Prague at 9 because they played an up-and-coming Shakopee to OT was the rationale I guess. Very shocked to see Detroit Lakes at 10 yes they played Fergus & EGF tough but they were blitzed by Fergus early and they blew a prime chance at home by 2 over a reeling Greenwave. However. they need to be in the Top 20 bad omission on my part but I cant see them as a Top 10 team so to hear them over the likes of Northfield, Duluth Denfeld and any of the 2A teams Orono, Minneapolis, etc... to name a few was very surprising.

What makes it fun is different opinions though. Another fun look at Class A!

CLASS A GAMES OF THE WEEK (12/6/21-12/11/21)

Tuesday Dec. 7th
#19 Chisago Lakes @ #17 Monticello
This is the game of who stays in the Top 20 Class A Rankings. An old 5A battle now is a chance for the Moose or Wildcats to prove they belong in the top 20 of Class A. Should be a good one, these teams alway play each other tough.

New Prague @ #11 Orono
New Prague looks like a solid Class A club. YHH has them in the top 10. I don't see that but a good showing at Orono could change my mind. This is a good one to see where both clubs are at as they both appear to be top 15 teams as we move forward.

#13 Providence Academy @ #15 Minneapolis
Big Section 2A game here. Another week and another opportunity for Providence Academy to prove where they stand in this tough deep section. Big chance this week for Minneapolis to make a statement in their Section and in Class A. This should be a good battle and rematch of the 2A Quarters last year.

Mankato West vs. Mankato East
The first of two between the two Mankato schools. Both are still considered favorites in Section 3A. The next time they meet will be for Hockey Day. Both seem to be trying to figure themselves out so this will be a big one to get for both.

Thursday Dec 9th
#2 Mahtomedi @ Hill Murray
Good matchup for the Zephyrs and Ben Dardis to play the big boys again. Also, interesting angle Hermantown just handled the Pioneers so see how the 2nd best in Class A holds up here.

#18 Monticello @ #11 Orono
Another good match up here. Orono looks like the place to be in Class A this week. The Moose could use this one as could the Spartans to prove they are a legit Class A Top 10 team. Another good game for the rankings early on in Class A.

#17 Mound Westonka @ #16 Breck
Another big Section 2A Matchup. The Mustangs need this one as they are trending their way out of the rankins also this would be big for Mound Westonka to prove that they belong.

Friday Dec. 10th
#1 Hermantown @ Wayzata
The Hawks opened the season with a bang as they won two good AA games. Don't overlook this one though the Trojans play a tough in your face style. They will limit space for the Hawks I could see the Trjoans winning this one a good test for the Hawks

New Ulm @ #20 Luverne
This one should be fun. New Ulm will most likely enter at (4-0) and they will take on Luverne who is off to a fast start at (3-0-0). This one will have big implications on the Big South Conference standings and could go a long way in determining the Section 3A top seed. One down south to keep an eye on.

Saturday Dec. 11th
#15 Minneapolis @ #8 Alexandria
This will be a good battle in Alexandria both teams have a big week and this should be a good Saturday game to pay attention to for Class A rankings

#17 Mound Westonka @ #4 Delano
This one will be a battle. These teams always play low scoring physical structured games. This will be no different a very important Section 2A game for both clubs.

St Thomas Academy @ #2 Mahtomedi
Another good matchup for the Zephyrs. They should have a very good opportunity to win this game against good competition for Mahtomedi.

Grand Rapids @ #3 Warroad
A big opportunity for the Warrior here to make a statement on their home ice. Grand Rapids comes in having destroyed their competition so far and look to be a very solid AA team as always. Warroad is still looking to make their splash and show worthy of the pre-season hype. Can't wait to see how this one turns out.

CLASS A GAME OF THE WEEK
#8 Alexandria @ #7 Little Falls (Tuesday Dec. 7th)
Great Class A matchup here as old Section 6A Rivals face off. Alexandria has owned this series of late not having lost to Little Falls since 2016. The Flyers are off to a fast start and need this one for State Seedings. Same goes for Alexandria. If you get a chance to tune into Flyer Media Productions on YouTube on Tuesday night you won't be disappointed. If your an Alex fan know that Mr. Hirshy who does the call is a major Homer but it's what makes the call all that more fun. I can't wait to see this one as it will be tight and lots fun to see who can come out on top.

Legacy Hockey Commentary- Overall I really love this poll I think it blends all the others together from above. While they are a little low on Alexandria and maybe a bit high on Detroit Lakes overall this is a nice poll.

Legacy Hockey is officially being sponsored by the Minnesota High School Boys Hockey Coaches Association. It is run by Loren Nelson who was the mastermind behind Hockey Hub in its glory era of awesome content and in-depth MN High School Hockey puck coverage. However, the Start Tribune eventually bought out Hockey Hub and well we know the issues since. If you have not added this site to your list I highly recommend you do: www.legacy.hockey its worth your search along with YHH these two are must looks for High School Puck lovers!

The LF vs Alex game will be very telling regarding the Flyers. So far the Flyers have outshot everyone and even when shots were closer, it was my observation that the Flyers had significantly more zone time than the opposition. With one of the question marks being goaltending, if Alex can have the advantage in zone time, it might be tough on the Flyers. It will challenge the D-men and the team's total defense to keep shots to the outside and block a lot of shots. I suppose that goes for anyone playing LF though.

I agree on all fronts. LF’s goaltending is very shaky compared to having Couture back there the past three years. Only four defensemen see the ice, though they are two pretty decent pairings. It seems like the new coaching staff has adjusted accordingly and the Flyers play a more up-tempo style than they have recently. Filippi and Johnson on the top line are very good, and they have been creating all manner of unsettled situations.

I have yet to see Alex in action this year, so I am especially looking forward to the game. Too bad it is no longer a sectional matchup!

1. Hermantown
I had the Hawks the clear number 1 to start the season at least a tier ahead of their closest competitor. It appears I had underestimated how good they would be.

2. Mahtomedi (+1)
The initial preseason number 3 teams moves up a spot with dominate wins and a 1-3 loss against one of the best AA teams in the State. This team seems to get better as the season progresses and plays one of the toughest A schedules.

3. Delano (+2)
A great start for the normally slow starting the Tigers who are doing everything a top 3 team should with wins against top 5-15 A programs.

4. Warroad (-2)
Had competitive games as expected against AA Mounds View and Bemidji and came out with Ws. Was tempted to drop them down another spot or 2, but they are 3-0 against better competition than teams below them, so they get the benefit of the doubt for now.

5. Fergus Falls (+1)
The Otters returned a lot of talent from their top 10 team of last season and look very good up front. Took care of business with the teams on their schedule with wins over solid DL and NL.

6. Little Falls (+1)
Just behind the Otters, who will likely be battling each other in the rankings all season. Handled business accordingly to start out 5-0.

7. EGF (-2)
Could easily drop the Green Wave down a couple more spots, but don't think the teams behind them have done enough yet to take the spot. Will probably take a while to figure out if EGF belongs in the top 10 or not.

8. Alexandria (even)
The Cards show they are a top 10 with a close loss to Sartell and win against top 15 River Lakes.

9. Orono (+4)
I think they are a little more complete than other considered for the spot.

10. Northern Lakes
A surprise in the top 10. Overlooked with some graduation losses, but there is talent.

Tuesday Night (12/7/21) Class A Recap-

Games of the Night-
#7 Little Falls 7 #9 Alexandria 6 OT
A great Class A game last night at Exchange Arena. Alexandria came out flying against Little Falls building a 6-1 lead at one point in the 2nd period. It was a balanced attack led by Brycen Berg’s 2 goal however, Little Falls ended up reuniting their big line of Johnson, Filippi and Oothoudt and they just kept fighting back. They got some heroics from Senior DefenderGeorge Moore to tie it in the last 1:30 and they finished it off with a shorthanded winner in OT by senior Defender Collin Kray. Fun game to watch lived up to billing of Class A Game of the Week.

#19 Chisago Lakes 4 #17 Monticello 1
The Wildcats proved they deserve to stay in the top 20 of Class A. The Wildcats got the lead in the first period and built on it to come away with a solid 4-1 win. Tough one for the Moose at home after a full week off I still see them as a contender in Section 5A but an 0-3 start with Orono up next makes things tough on them.

New Prague 3 #11 Orono 3
New Prague looked every bit the part of a Class A ranked team. Orono jumped out early as Walker was the best player on the ice and the Spartans led 2-0. In the second period though New Prague seized control of the game they actually led 3-2 in the third. However, their top line played mega minutes and Orono appeared to wear them down. Orono tied it up and had numerous grade A opportunities to win it but the Trojans goalies stood tough and it was hard fought tie.New Prague is definitely a top 20 team moving forwards and a serious threat to Northfield in Section 1A.

#15 Minneapolis 8 #13 Providence Academy 2
Big Section 2A game that was tied up 2-2 and very even after 1 period but Minneapolis broke up the tied game behind the Hattrick of Evan Grimm and the efforts of the Hanson brothers scoring 6 unanswered in the 2nd and 3rd period. Big win for them and a big matchup looms on Saturday @ Alexandria.

Mankato East 8 Mankato West 3
Mankato East dominated this one. Mankato West drops to 0-3 on the year and appears to be in a rebuild mode. Good 3A and Cross town rivalry win for the Cougs. They meet again at HDMN Mankato.

Other Notable Scores
#6 East Grand Forks 14 Crookston 0- The shots in this were an incredible 59 to 1 that's one way to cover up for some shaky goaltending.

#8 Duluth Denfeld 5 Hibbing 0- Good 7A win for the Hunters on the road

#10 Northfield 5 Red Wing 0- Raiders dominate in their oly action this week for a solid Section 1A win.

#14 Southwest Christian 3 Hopkins 2- meh…. But a win is a win for the stars.

Thursday Night (12/9/21) Class A Recap-

Games of the Night-
Hill Murray 3 #2 Mahtomedi 2

Hill Murray's goal with 3:39 remaining lifted the AA Pioneers to a 3-2 win over #2 Mahtomedi. Standout Zephyrs goaltender Ben Dardis finished with an astounding 55 saves. The Zephyrs' Corey Bohmert tied the game with a goal with 6:29 remaining, however the Pioneers were able to solve Dardis late to pull this one out. This is another example of how dangerous Mahtomedi will be at the X. .

#18 Monticello 2 #11 Orono 1
#18 Monticello snapped its three-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over #11 Orono on the road. The Moose got two early first-period goals from Tyler Bitz and Brayden Dunn and hung on for a much needed win. They outshot Orono 35-29 in the game and Orono’s status drops as their win over Breck a week later is looking less impressive. The win by the Moose should save them a spot at the bottom of the Class A Rankings and prove they are a threat to Little Falls in 5A.

#17 Mound Westonka 5 #16 Breck 3
A big early middle of the pack Section 2A game went Mound Westonka’s way. The game was tied 2-2 after 2 period but a big 20 shot 3 goal third period led the White Hawks to big section road win over Breck. Michael Doshan’s 3 point effort led the charge as Mound Westonka next travels to Section 2A Delano for another early season key section matchup. Breck meanwhile continues to search for answers but there were flashes of a good team in the making.

Other Notable Scores
Chanhassen 4 #4 Delano 2-
The Tigers were tripped up on the road by a young up and coming AA Chanhassen group.

#5 Fergus Falls 6 Sauk Rapids 1- Otters cruised against an inferior CLC team.

#6 East Grand Forks 3 Grand Forks Central 2- EGF picks up a very good win over North Dakota’s 2nd ranked. A late 3rd period Power Play goal sealed a very nice victory for the Greenwave who are improving every time they hit the ice.

#7 Little Falls 6 Pine City 3- A very chippy Section 5A game that saw a whopping 22 penalties taken between the two teams. The flyers are winning but the discipline is starting to look like a bad trend.

#8 Duluth Denfeld 6 Cloquet 2- Another big third period effort by the Hunters secures them another good win. They are showing they are definitely a top 10 team moving forward after a hard to read start to their year.

#12 Northern Lakes 4 Brainerd 2- Huge program win as the Lightning take the “Battle For The Paddle” despite being outshot 56-17 in this one.

#13 Providence Academy 6 Hutchinson 0- I was paying attention to this one to get a feel where previously unbeaten Hutch stood. They would be the heavy favorite in 3A but they showed last night they will be a low seed in a very jammed pack tough Section 2A. Good win for the Lions.

#19 Chisago Lakes 11 Becker/Big Lake 1- Another team that section movement hurt but the Wildcats now (4-0-1) are looking like the #2 team in Section 4A.

Friday fun as always the Official Class A Poll is out and as always Let's Play hockey has some interesting teams in spots.

Let's Play Hockey Rankings (12/10/21)
1- Hermantown
2- Warroad
3- Mahtomedi
4- Delano
5- Little Falls
6- Fergus Falls
7- East Grand Forks
8- Duluth Denfeld
9- Southwest Christian
10- Greenway
11- Minneapolis
12- Orono
13- Breck
14- Chisago Lakes
15- Providence Academy
16- St Cloud Cathedral
17- Hutchinson
18- Luverne
19- Alexandria
20- Northfield

LPH Rankings Thoughts- Overall I think the top 8 are everyone's top 8 with different orders... For me 9-12 need to have Minneapolis I like them at 11. However, Greenway sorry way too high and Northfield and Alexandria are top 15 for sure. Orono and Breck are way too high. Interesting omissions no New Prague they might still think they are AA and no Northern Lakes I thought mildy surprising. I have had my eye on Cathedral and Hutch but I dont see them as top 20 at this time but not gonna be too critical there. Overall, this is not terrible and it looks like they are moving teams more then in the past years.

Top 8 (Hermantown, Mahtomedi, Warroad, EGF, Delano, Little Falls, Fergus Falls, Duluth Denfeld) is how is appears in whatever order

The Next Best 9-15 (Alexandria, Minneapolis, Northfeild, New Prague, SWC, Providence, Northern Lakes)

For now appear to be the top 15
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The rest 16 -26 you could throw a ton of teams at the wall- (Orono, Mound Westonka, Detroit Lakes, Cathedral, Luverne, New Ulm, Breck, Greenway, Monticello, Chisago Lakes, Mankato East)

Thats how I see it I know we could argue about 12-20 all day but to me that is kind of where is looks like we stand early on in Class A

Friday Night (12/10/21) Class A Recap-

Games of the Night-
Friday Dec 9th
#1 Hermantown 2 Wayzata 1

The Hawks were pushed hard in this one. The jumped out to a 2-0 lead but may have lost their top player in Zam Plante who was hurt and did not return. Dane Callaway stopped 19 of 20 shots and Hermantown won a very good game on the Road. Now we wait to hear more on Zam Plante’s injury staus.

#2 Warroad 6 Rock Ridge 0

A very nice dominant win by the Warriors lead up front by Jayson Shaugabay and Damon Gardner Warroad cruised to a 6-0 win. Hampton Slukynski secured his first shutout of the year and a runtime third period allowed Warroad to stay rested for their big match up vs. Grand Rapids today.

Cambridge 4 #18 Monticello 1

A big Section 5A win for Cambridge here. They were able to control the game after a big 23 shot 2 goal second period. The Moose are just struggling right now and will drop out of the rankings. However, pay attention to Cambridge’s Freshman Sensation in net goaltender Jaxon Sibell. I am assuming he is related to the last great Sibell goaltender from there who is playing D1 hockey this winter. The younger Sibell is now (3-0-0) with 1.80 GAA and .937 SV% very impressive numbers. He gets Little Falls this week and I can't wait to watch him play.

Slow night in Class A but a ton of good matchups today to help finalize the Rankings for Week #3.
