A Rankings for 2/13/22
Class A Ranking Week #12 (2/13/2022)
1- Hermantown (7A) (22-2-0)
Past Week Results: W 5-1 Rock Ridge, W 5-3 Holy Family, W 6-3 St Thomas Academy
Upcoming Schedule: 2/15 @ Grand Rapids
The Hawks found themselves in a battle of the road with improving Rock Ridge; it was Beau Janzig’s goal 12:20 into the 2nd period that helped break open a tie game. The Hawks would go on to score three more after that and win their 20th game of the year. The Hawks again found themselves again in a surprising battle with Holy Family; it was Dallas Vieau’s late power play goal in the third period that helped clinshing the win over the Fire. Max Plante’s big 4 point night helped the Hawks pull away from STA to wrap up a solid weekend at home. Now Hermantown wraps up the regular season with a good one against Grand Rapids before preparing for what will surely be an extended playoff push.
2- Warroad (8A) (19-3-1)
Past Week Results: W 6-3 East Grand Forks
Upcoming Schedule: 2/15 vs Bemidji, 2/19 @ Delano
The Warriors used Sophomore Carson Pilgrim’s four goal 1st period to jump out to a big lead and never look back against East Grand Forks at home. The sweep of the Greenwave help the Warriors lock up the #1 seed in Section 8A and showed they are finding scoring depth as we near the playoffs. Their Bemidji game got postponed to the final week of the year and they also will make the long trek to Delano which could be a very interesting game as far as State Seeding goes.
3- Mahtomedi (4A) (11-10-1)
Past Week Results: W 6-0 Breck
Upcoming Schedule: 2/15 @ Delano, 2/17 @ South St Paul, 2/19 vs Woodbury
The Zephyrs were able to cruise past a Breck team that has been steadily improving of late. They jumped out to a two goal lead in the first period and that was more than enough as Ben Dardis recorded his 18th career shutout to set the state record. This week Mahtomedi has a good test as they head to Delano to try to lock in the the #3 seed for the State Tournament. They then face struggling South St Paul to lock in the #1 seed in 4A and they finish up with AA Woodbury to wrap up their regular season.
4- Minneapolis (2A) (18-5-1)
Past Week Results: L 7-8 OT Gentry Academy, W 6-3 Chisago Lakes, W 6-2 St Paul Johnson
Upcoming Schedule: 2/14 @ Gentry Academy
Minneapolis played what may have been one of the most entertaining games of the high school hockey season. They went toe to toe with the defending Class A Champions Gentry Academy. Hank Davis capped off a big 5 point night by scoring the go ahead goal at the midway mark of the third period to put Minneapolis up 7-6. However, Gentry was able to tie the last minutes of the third on a controversial goal and then win it quickly in overtime. Minneapolis fell behind 3-0 early but after the first period they dominated Chisago Lakes. They scored 6 unanswered goals and outhot the Wildcats 28-7 in final two periods Zander Zoia’s big three point night helped lead the way for a very nice home win. Minneapolis wrapped up the week by taking care of St Paul Johnson and now they will finish the regular season with a rematch with Gentry which will hopefully be as exciting as the first match up.
5- Delano (2A) (16-6-0)
Past Week Results: W 4-3 Litchfield Dassel Cokato, W 7-1 Southwest Christian
Upcoming Schedule: 2/15 vs Mahtomedi, 2/17 @ Monticello, 2/19 vs Warroad
The Tigers found themselves in a battle with 2A LDC. In a game that went back and forth and was very evenly played it was Gunnar Paulson that played the hero as he scored the GWG with just 15 seconds left in regulation while shorthanded and Delano picked up a key Section 2A win. Delano then routed SWC 7-1 to finish off a good week in Section 2A play. Gunnar Paulson was again the hero racking up a big 4 point night and the Tigers finished their week on a strong note. This week is huge for Delano if they can beat Mahtomedi and Warroad they could move all the way up to the number two seed at state. Great tests to end their year and opportunities to show they are a top 4 team.
6- Alexandria (6A) (14-6-1)
Past Week Results: W 5-4 St. Cloud, W 6-4 Northern Lakes
Upcoming Schedule: 2/14 vs River Lakes, 2/15 @ Fergus Falls, 2/17 vs Brainerd
Alexandria’s Tyler Kuldt’s second goal of the night near the end of the 2nd period appeared to put the Cards in total control as they led by three after two periods. Turns out they would need it as they held on for dear life in the third period where they were badly outplayed and snuck out with a one victory over a struggling St Cloud team. The Cards fund themselves in another scary spot on Saturday as they were tied 4-4 late in the third with Section 6A Northern Lakes however the Lightning imploded with some undisciplined penalties to give Alex a 5-3 Power Play and Pieter Mulder scored to give the Cards the lead and they would get one more later to escape another upset bid at home for the week. This week they have a big game at Fergus Falls where the #1 seed will be decided by the winner for 6A.
7- Northfield (1A) (16-5-1)
Past Week Results: W 4-2 Mankato East, W 5-1 Rochester Century, W 2-0 Mankato East
Upcoming Schedule: 2/10 vs Rochester John Marshall, 2/17 vs Austin, 2/19 @ Mankato West
Northfield won the rematch against 3A Favorite Mankato East 4-2. In a very even and entertaining game it was the Raiders Andrew Winter’s two goals that proved to be the difference. These top two Southern Class A clubs will play third time this Saturday due to both losing a game vs. Roseville in the Herb Brooks Classic earlier this winter. The Raiders cruised to another Big 9 win over Rochester Century as Caden Monson’s 4 point night helped lead the way to another conference victory. They finished the week with a good rematch win over Mankato East behind Keaton Walock’s shutout in net. The Raiders are (14-1-1) in Big Nine play and (2-4-0) outside of it. I don't love putting them here as we have seen them exposed when they leave the south to play but there isn't anybody else and they are winning games.
8- Detroit Lakes (8A) (17-4-1)
Past Week Results: W 5-0 Park Rapids, T 3-3 Red Lake Falls
Upcoming Schedule: 2/17 vs Little Falls, 2/19 vs Northern Lakes
The Lakers got their week off to a rocky start as they found themselves tied 0-0 in a battle in the middle of the 2nd period against Park Rapids. However, Jordan Fields was able to take control of the game and put up three points after that and get the Lakers another win over a Mid-State/8A team. The Lakers then were lucky to get out of Red Lake Falls with tie and that should be enough to keep their #3 seed in 8A play. Again this team and Northfield right ahead of them are so hard to read as outside of their conference play neither have done much. They will finish the regular season with two good matchups vs Little Falls and Northern Lakes.
9- Little Falls (5A) (19-4-0)
Past Week Results: L 2-5 Totino Grace
Upcoming Schedule: 2/15 vs St Cloud Cathedral, 2/17 @ Detroit Lakes
The Flyers only had one game this week and they dug themselves a huge hole falling behind 4-0 they did cut the Eagles lead to 2 but were not able to get it any closer. Now they turn their attention to a huge home game in a rematch with SCC. This one is critical for LF who wants to keep the #2 seed in 5A and after that they will finish the regular season with an intriguing matchup vs Detroit Lakes to help get a better gadge where both are at as we head closer to the playoffs.
10- Duluth Denfeld (7A) (17-8-0)
Past Week Results: W 6-2 Duluth East, W 3-2 Duluth Marshall.
Upcoming Schedule: Section 7A Playoffs
The Hunters picked up their first win over their cross town rivals Duluth East since 2013. Behind Cooper McClure’s two goal and three point night overall the Hunters were able to overwhelm the Hounds. Things got very ugly at the end as emotions on both sides seemed to boil over as the rivals took a combined 20 penalties but it was the west side of Duluth that for the first time in nearly a decade got the bragging rights of the public school hockey rivalry. The Hunters were able to win a tight game over the Hilltoppers to claim the City of Duluth Championship to end their regular season. Now the Hunter will sit and wait as they take the next week off before beginning the Section 7A playoffs where they will be a 2 or 3 seed and most likely meet the Hawks in the Section 7A Title Game.
11- Chisago Lakes (4A) (17-4-1)
Past Week Results: W 6-3 Cambridge, L 3-6 Minneapolis, W 6-5 Northern Edge
Upcoming Schedule: 2/15 @ St Paul Johnson, 2/17 vs Dodge County, 2/19 vs Tartan
The Wildcats picked up a big Mississippi 8 Conference win as they avenged their earlier season loss by defeating Cambridge this time around. The two Nikolas boys led the way as Nikolas Jinks had 4 points while Nikolas Helland had 3 points and Wildcats used a big three goal third period to break open a tie game and win on their home ice. Chisago Lakes looked to be heading for their best win of the season when they jumped out to 3-0 lead over a highly ranked Minneapolis team. However, they faded badly and ended up giving up six unanswered goals and only managed to muster seven shots in the final two periods of play in a rough loss. They finished their week by barely escaping an upset bid from Northern each and clinching a share of the Mississippi 8 Conference Title. This week they have a Section 4A game and two games vs middle tier AA teams with a 3 game sweep they could end with a 20 win regular season.
12- Thief River Falls (8A) (11-11-0)
Past Week Results: L 2-8 Roseau, W 4-2 Fergus Falls
Upcoming Schedule: 2/14 vs Red Lake Falls, 2/15 vs East Grand Forks, 2/17 @ Bemidji
Thief River Falls was routed by the Rams to start the week. They were tied 1-1 after the 1st period of play but it was all Rams after that and they skated away to win an easy win over the outmatched Prowler team. The Prowlers did rebound and picked up their best win of the year as they were able to break open a 2-2 game late and win over the Otters. TRF is now back to .500 and has played a very good schedule and their coaching has them right where they are always playing their best hockey as they enter the last week of the season. Huge games for them this week vs. Red Lake Falls and EGF that help them in seeding with a good performance.
13- Fergus Falls (6A) (15-8-0)
Past Week Results: W 4-1 River Lakes, L 2-4 Thief River Falls
Upcoming Schedule: 2/15 vs Alexandria, 2/17 @ St. Cloud
The Otters were able to get some revenge on what was the worst loss of their season earlier this year vs River Lakes. In the rematch Fergus was able to slowly build a three goal lead and Ben Swenson stopped 21 of 22 shots to help secure the win at home. However to end the week they dropped a tough one to a solid TRF team they were able to tie the game at 2 in third but again failed to find a way to secure a big win. This week huge game with Alexandria to battle for the #1 seed in 6A.
14- Cambridge- Isanti (5A) (17-5-1)
Past Week Results: L 3-6 Chisago Lakes, W 13-0 Becker Big Lake
Upcoming Schedule: 2/15 vs Anoka, 2/17 vs St. Cloud Cathedral
Cambridge jumped out to two different leads over the Wildcatson road however, it was Chisago Lakes who would rattle off three unanswered goals in the third period to hand Cambridge it’s second consecutive loss. Cambridge did rebound and picked up a big Section 5A win and share of the Mississippi 8 Conference Title with their rout of Becker Big Lake. They wrap the season up with a huge game against SCC this week. With a win it should give them a #1 seed with a loss they could drop as far as the #4 seed in Section 5A Seeding.
15- East Grand Forks (8A) (8-15-0)
Past Week Results: L 3-6 Warroad, L 1-7 Grand Forks Central
Upcoming Schedule: 2/15 @ Thief River Falls, 2/19 @ Roseau
The Greenwave were swept by their 8A rival’s Warroad in another game where they allowed 5 or more goals. They fell behind big early and were never able to catch up for another disappointing loss in what is the most disappointing team in Class A this year. East Grand Forks wrapped their week by getting routed on the road by Grand Forks Central. The Greenwave did play a good first period and tied the score at 1-1 but then the wheels fell off as they gave up 6 unanswered and suffered yet another defeat of giving up 5 or more goals. I had to move them down even though I know they would beat every team ranked 7-14 ahead of them on this list but they are just so bad defensively. Big game vs TRF to wrap up their season this coming week it is a must win vs the Prowlers if they want to hold on to their #2 seed in Section 8A.
16- Orono (2A) (10-12-1)
Past Week Results: L 2-5 Benilde St. Margaret's, L 3-4 Chanhassen
Upcoming Schedule: 2/14 vs Bloomington Kennedy, 2/19 vs Chaska
Orono dropped back below .500 as they fell to a very good AA Red Knights Squad. Their former youth teammate Ben Norris had a big night against his former buddies as his three point night helped lead Benilde to the victory over the Spartans. Orono gave Chanhassen a good battle they were never able to lead but they hung around throughout the game they again got great goaltending from Brock Peyton and if they can find any scoring outside of Walker this team will be a tough out in 2A. This week they have a must win vs Kennedy before wrapping up with a good AA Chaska.
17- Providence Academy (2A) (17-6-1)
Past Week Results: L 0-3 Breck, L 3-4 Rochester Lourdes
Upcoming Schedule: 2/17 vs Waconia
Providence Academy was shocked on the road by 2A rival Breck despite outshooting the Mustangs 47-27 they were unable to capitalize as the Breck goaltender shut down the Lions high powered offense. The loss pretty much seals Providence’s fate as the #4 seed in Section 2A and they will have a very tough road to make it to their programs first ever appearance at state. The Lions week then really hit the skids as they were upset on the road by Rochester Lourdes and now you really question how good this team is heading into the playoffs. They need to win vs Waconia this week to save face in seeding and hold on to the #4 seed in Section 2A.
18- Simley (4A) (16-8-1)
Past Week Results: L 4-5 Coon Rapids, W 5-2 Bloomington Kennedy
Upcoming Schedule: 2/16 @ St Paul Highland Park
Simley dropped a surprising game to struggling Coon Rapids. The game was tightly contested throughout and it was the Spartans who grabbed a 4-3 lead early in the third period. However, it was Coon Rapids who would tie the game up and then win it with only 12 seconds left to complete the upset over Simley. The Spartans rebounded from a disappointing loss earlier this week and behind Matt Milner’s three point night they were able to claim a victory over Bloomington Kennedy. They wrap their season up with one more game vs. a Section 4A team St Paul Highland Park with a win that should most likely wrap up the #2 seed in the Section 4A Playoffs.
19- Litchfield Dassel Cokato (2A) (14-8-1)
Past Week: L 3-4 Delano, W 8-0 Hutchinson
Upcoming Schedule: 2/15 vs Sauk Rapids, 2/17 vs Princeton
The Dragons are a team that has really come on strong since a slow (2-4-0) start to their year. Most likely the slow start had a lot to do with half of their team winning a State Football Title at DC that put them 2-3 weeks behind everyone else. Since the slow start they are (12-4-1) in their last 17 games and the majority of this group went to State in 3A last winter. This past week they lost a heartbreaker at Delano with 15 seconds to play but showed in that game they are very formidable in 2A. They backed that up by destroying Hutchinson which was their worst loss in their recent stretch of good play. Now they have two winnable game this week and then will argue hard for the #5 seed in a deep Section 2A.
20- New Ulm (3A) (18-6-0)
Past week: W 8-1 Waseca
Upcoming Schedule: 2/17 @ Luverne
Welcome to the Top 20 New Ulm who this week won their 42nd straight game in the Big South Conference. Senior Braxten Hoffman and Sophomore Austin Uecker both have over 20 goals and center their top two lines. This team is unbeaten in 3A and will most likely get the nod for the #1 seed due to play more section teams than Mankato East. Yes they are (15-0-0) vs the Big South and (3-6-0) outside of conference play but they have a very good chance at State in 3A. They wrap up their season with a game at what will be the Section 3A #3 seed Luverne in what was a hot rivalry a few years back. With a win they could secure home ice for the playoffs as 3A is the only Section is the State not using a neutral site for the Section Championship.
The Next Five Notable Class A Teams-
Rock Ridge (7A) (12-10-1)- Won a critical game over Proctor this past week. If they sweep Greenway and Hibbing this week, both who beat them earlier this year, it should give them a #2 seed in 7A and a spot in the Final Top 20 Class A Ranking.
Mankato East (3A) (12-10-1)- The Cougars had another tough week and are (2-6-1) in their last 9 games. Still will be a top two seed in the favorite in 3A but their recent play has not been good.
St Cloud Cathedral (5A) (11-11-0)- Dropped back to .500 for the first time since early December and are (3-8-0) since the start of 2022. All is not lost though for the Crusaders because if they sweep LF and CI this week they could be the #1 seed in 5A.
Rochester Lourdes (1A) (18-6-0)- Lourdes picked up a nice upset over Providence Academy and won their two Section 1A games this week and will have strong argument for the the #2 seed a great turn around in only 2 years after being (0-26-0).
Northern Lakes (6A) (13-9-0)- Welcome back to the discussion Northern Lakes after crashing around christmas time this team has slowly played better hockey of late their win over Cambridge and tight battle with Alexandria shows this team could still surprise in the playoffs.

The two Nikolas boys led the way as Nikolas Jinks had 4 points while Nikolas Helland had 3 points and Wildcats used a big three goal third period to break open a tie game and win on their home ice. However, they faded badly and ended up giving up six unanswered goals and only managed to muster seven shots in the final two periods of play in a rough loss. They finished their week by barely escaping an upset bid from Northern each and clinching a share of the Mississippi 8 Conference Title.

11- Cotter (0-9-0)
Section 1A Overview- Northfield is the clear #1 seed as they are unbeaten in section play. Rochester Lourdes looks solid as the #2 seed. New Prague & Albert Lea will be an interesting discussion. I think the Tigers play more 1A teams to get the nod in a coaches vote. Winona has won 6 in a row and owns the 2nd win over both Faribault & Red Wing but lost to La Crescent head to head. Waseca followed by Austin and then Cotter round out the bottom three seeds.
Section 2A (11 Teams)
Team- (Overall Record)
1- Minneapolis (4)- (18-5-1)
2- Orono (16)- (10-12-1)

Section 2A Overview- Minneapolis is the 1 seed they own the head to head wins over the next top three seeds. Orono is the #2 seed as they are (5-1-0) in 2A and own the head to head over Delano who will be #3. Providence Academy is hanging on to the #4 seed barley for now. Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato and Breck will be a good debate both have some ugly 2A losses and own big 2A wins as well. Southwest Christian is fading as is Hutchinson as they lost the crucial 2nd meeting vs. Mound Westonka. Bloomington Kennedy will play Waconia to solve the 10 and 11 seed this week.
Section 3A (10 Teams)

7- Fairmont- (7-15-0)
8- Minnesota River- (5-17-1)
9- Mankato West- (7-15-0)
10- Redwood Valley-(2-19-0)
Section 3A Overview- New Ulm & Mankato East are the clear 1 and 2 as both remain unbeaten in 3A play and I think the Eagles will get the nod in the coaches vote because they play all the Big South Schools and Cougars played only the Bulldogs. Luverne has beaten everyone below them and are locked at the three seed. Marshall won the 2nd match up over Windom who right now owns the head to head win over Worthington. The Trojans swept Fairmont who Swept Minnesota River. Redwood Valley is at the bottom. The biggest question mark will be how far does Mankato West fall based on results they should be 9 as they lost head to head to the Bulldogs and were sept by the Cougars easily but I see them at 6 in the coaches vote or maybe they will be punished for being unknown.

Chisago Lakes is having a nice year but they dont play many Section 4A teams so they are a mystery in the coaches vote. St Paul Highland Park owns the head to head win over South St Paul. The Packers won the 2nd meeting over both Two Rivers & St Paul Johnson meanwhile St Paul Academy has one section win when they beat the Govs.

Duluth Denfeld stays at two for now but if Rock Ridge wins both 2nd meetings with Hibbing & Greenway this week they will move ahead of the Hunters having beaten them the 2nd time. Proctor looks pretty secure at the 4 seed and will get to play the Raiders after all this year even though they avoided a regular season game. The Bluejackets could still shake things up if they sweep RR. International Falls beat North Shore and Ely owns the head to head win over Moose Lake.

After Warroad this will be interesting.
There is always talk about a change to the top 3, but will they actually vote that way.
DL would love to be in the 2 or 3 spot - not a huge difference because they are not at home.
DL would love to have TRF in 2 o3 to their 2 or 3. Then one game on neutral ice and take down the Warriors.
EGF just needs to be healthy and disciplined. 1 out of 2 is all I think they can get for one game but not back-to-back games.
Thief has a brilliant coach - perhaps a shot and should be in the 3 spot.
RLF getting to the ship would be a huge accomplishment for their program.
Warriors - all of us non-homers want them at the X on Saturday afternoon to give the Hawks a game, again.

4 DETROIT LAKES 17 4 1 0.795 116 35 16.20
5 RED LAKE FALLS 15 6 1 0.705 125 57 14.68

Re: A Rankings for 2/13/22
Love PageStat but the above is why you need to consider head to head as well.
Delano lost to Both MPLS and Orono. More likely to see Delano at the 3 seed
Re: A Rankings for 2/13/22
You mean why the coaches SHOULD consider it but they just vote.
Delano has a history
Orono has a history
Minneapolis is not well liked.

Hermantown is not well liked either but results matter.elliott70 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 13, 2022 10:42 amYou mean why the coaches SHOULD consider it but they just vote.

MPLS has beat Delano, Orono and Providence head to head they are the #1 seed
I agree I think Delano comes out that deep group but the #1 seed is MPLS.
Re: A Rankings for 2/13/22
No one would want to explain their vote against Hermantown - everyone else votes to be in the opposite bracket as the Hawks.ClassAGuy wrote: ↑Sun Feb 13, 2022 10:45 amHermantown is not well liked either but results matter.

You give the coaches too much credit.
How many coaches do you think read this board (or would admit to it).
Re: A Rankings for 2/13/22
I am not sure if Coaches read this board I guess not sure on that note.elliott70 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 13, 2022 10:51 amNo one would want to explain their vote against Hermantown - everyone else votes to be in the opposite bracket as the Hawks.

I am just saying MPLS has a beaten Delano, Orono, Providence head to head they will be voted #1 and I could see Delano sneaking up to 2 based on reputation but they wont over come losses to both MPLS and Orono. Last year Breck got the 1 seed in 2A why they beat Delano head to head coaches honor that. Delano then went on to blast them in the Section Finals. MPLS will be the 1 seed
Re: A Rankings for 2/13/22
You probably know 2A coaches better than me.
Re: A Rankings for 2/13/22
It’s a good time of the year even if it was minus 32 this morning.
Re: A Rankings for 2/13/22
Agreed! Last week you brought up State Predictions going to stick with mine below are my Section Final Predictions & Section Winners
1A- Northfield over Rochester Lourdes
2A- Delano over MPLS
3A- Mankato East over New Ulm
4A- Mahtomedi over Chisago Lakes
5A- Little Falls over SCC
6A- Fergus Falls over Alex
7A- Hermantown over Denfeld
8A- Warroad over EGF
Sticking to my preseason picks feeling a little uneasy about Fergus and the Flyers but the rest I feel good about cant wait to see the upsets or maybe this is the year of chalk all to way to a Hermantown vs Warroad Title Game
Re: A Rankings for 2/13/22
Those work.
But I think Alex will win and take Warroad to ot and end up third.

Re: A Rankings for 2/13/22
You are probably right on Alex I just wanted to se the Otters but they have not been good in games vs decent teams this year.
I like your thoughts but Alex will most likely get the #5 seed at State
If things go Chalk seeds would be-
#1 Hermantown
#2 Warroad
#3 Mahtomedi
#4 Delano
#5 Alex
Northfield
Little Falls
Mankat East
Maybe Alex could knock out the Hawks like they did a few years ago in the Semis
