Tournament upsets? any?
I thought I would change this post and see how many upsets there might be with all the games being played this week.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... hcorner at: 12/28/05 6:43 am

One place to check is the Schwan site <a href="http://www.superrink.org/schwan_cup/sch ...

Stillwater upset by ER 2-1 is the only surprise I noticed.

upsets
I thought that CDH over Cloquet was a mild upset. Maybe not in the mind of CDH boosters. It appears that Cloquet may lack speed.

Grand Rapids/Greenway was royally ripped off. They truly should have been the winners over New Prague, but the refs counted a goal for NP that never crossed the goal line and blew an early whistle before the puck did go in for GRG. That's a 2 goal difference in a 1 goal win for NP. May not have mattered, because the winner faces Warroad and Holly Roberts. She absolutely tore it up against Rochester Mayo/Lourdes. (The same ref blew an early whistle on a Rochester goal, but it wouldn't have mattered in this game.)

Re: upsets
SEHockeyDad,

Tuff to blame a game on the refs but you found a way! Score was 3-0 with 5 minutes left. New Prague did miss 3 breakaways and hit the post on one of them. I think you could say it would have been a different game but I wouldn't go as far as saying Grand Rapids would have one.
Grand Rapids has a good team and I thought New Prague played well - it is just a game but I don't think we can ever blame it on the refs or bad calls.

Re: upsets
I wasn't there (GRG-NP) but was listening on the radio. The announcers called the first goal you were talking about a couple seconds before the ref did, saying that the ref wasn't in position to see it right away. I don't know if that's true or not, but it's what i heard. They were NP announcers, so they I can't say they were neutral.

They did agree on the goal that was waved off, saying there was a quick whistle and New Prague got a break.

As far as those goals making the difference, I'm not sure you can say that, because a 2-1 game and a 3-0 game are played totally different. It sounded like NP went into a defensive shell after going up 3-0 and were just content to try to keep GR away from the goal. Both Lightning goals were scored late in the game while NP was in its shell (Kinda like a prevent defense???).

Upset? Maybe...Maybe not
Heard that Mayo/Lourde's won 7-3 over Grand Rapids today.
Grand Rapids beat them earlier in the year 6-1.

schwans
Yes, Mayo/Lourdes is a different team now than they were on that Saturday they lost to GRG. Hopefully, they keep improving.

The phantom goal called in the GRG/New Prague game was absolutely not a goal. I was sitting practically right on the goal line and watched it sit on the line, not in. I will say that some good points have been made and that the refs can't be fully blamed for the game's outcome. We don't know how the game would've been played out with the correct calls. Still, two blown calls, a one goal game...it's hard to dismiss that, too.

Re: schwans phantom goal...
The other phantom "goal" (NP's first) was not in the net but was called a goal. I was in the window above the goal and the puck never crossed the line. A college scout watching (I don't know who) agreed with the rest of us in the window. That was NP's first goal, and that goal changed the game - as first goals often do....

FYI, I have no stake in either team, NP or GRG ... just calling them as I see them.

Re: other tournaments
I know that a lot of you arent paying attention to the other tournaments this week. But Albert Lea beat New Ulm in the Sertoma shootout of Dodge. They won 5-4. I think that New Ulm was number 8 in the state and AL #18

Re: other tournaments
Just noticed CDH defeated BSM in the Schwan Cup Blue bracket...I'm assuming at least some, possibly most would consider this an upset. I think several of those who picked expected a Stillwater / BSM final. I went with a Stillwater / CDH final thinking 'bout the tough Suburban East. Turns out I was only half right...the wrong half BTW.

I'll go with CDH over ER in the final.

Edit: Is ER the 2005 Schwan Cup Cinderella story ??

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ookyone at: 12/29/05 2:05 pm

Sorry, not the place to be whining...just trying to keep the two names out there.

Re: HA over NSP
I would say that HA over NSP is an upset. First year class AA team, over a NSP team with two powerful forwards and a goalie with good numbers.

Re: SSP
Sure, Ashley Nixon proved once again what a solid goaltender
she is. Great job with a average supporting cast.

ALBERT LEA
Im with hcky23, no one talks about the shootout in Dodge. Good tournament, Albert Lea has been playing much better lately than in the beginning of the year.
