Has anyone heard anything about the Gopher State Festival in March at the Superrink? What type of tournament is it?

The coaches sent out e-mails to the other coaches throughout the state and asked for their input to not only their own teams but other teams they have played against. From that, the "head" coach made his/her decision.
www.rebelhockey.com

It seems odd that there is no discussion about this tournament next weekend. If your daughter is on a team, please "chime in" with your thoughts. Does anyone know of a website with rosters? Who is the sponsor for this tournament?

Thanks!

Now that the roster has been provided (as of last night), it is too bad that one team chose to NOT follow the guidelines, which stated this tournament is for UNDERCLASS girls... not seniors. The senior on the roster, just happens to be #6 in the state for all-time scoring. My thoughts were that this tournament was to showcase the talent of the younger girls...

Had the pleasure of watching Ms. Flor play this evening... she's a great player BUT I think everyone involved in this tournament dropped the ball by allowing 1 senior to play, from the coaches to the tournament director... to Ms. Flor herself for allowing one of the best players in the state a chance to play... knowing that this is an UNDERCLASS tournament. It wouldn't be so bad if she were an "average" skilled player. But to come out and score six goals??? There is alot of talent in the South without having to resort to bringing in a ringer.
<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/mad.gif ALT=">:">

The South coach was told that "any high school eligible girl" could play. He checked again this evening before the game was was told the same thing. I don't know who is the "organizing entity" for this tournament, but the "underclassman" guideline was not clearly spelled out. Not sure how anyone "knew" this was an underclass tournament for the girls.

This is a game being played by high school kids - I suggest we sit back and let them have fun. They love the game for what it is - let's leave it at that.

My point being that no other team chose a senior to play... every kid, other than Flor, is an underclass player. There are many talented seniors, from every region, that could have been brought in to play. Isn't that what the Senior Classic and Chicago Showcase are for though???

The letter from the Gopher State Festival says "We are very excited to add a girls division this year, which will consist of one team of underclass girls from the four regions."

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... eyfan09 at: 3/17/06 9:18 am

What I've typically found is that there are exceptions to every rule in these things. Regions are not always followed, age ranges can be pushed on either end of the spectrum, etc. All of this is about who you know, politics, and the like. Until which time we have programs run by unbiased people who select the best players based on followed guidelines (this will never happen) we will just continue to see things opperate as they do.

This is not directed at Flor or anyone in particular. I'd personally prefer that she not be named, but I understand that it illustrates the point.

Maybe it would be best to ask for clairification of what "underclassmen" means. Seems that the "interpretation" is "still in HS" here, as it sounds like others thought it meant 9th-10th grade.

Someone reminded me that I should thakn the volunteers who put these events together, and also that I should note that not all of the best players are always available, etc. and that certain people have differeing viewpoints of who the best players are, etc.

Some are youth coaches, some are AAA coaches, one is a HS assistant to my knowledge.

HS coaches can't coach their kids now as it's outside of the MSHSL contact period.
