race in hockey

hey i'm writing a paper about the lack of racial diversity in hockey and i need a bunch of sources so i figured this would be a good one. does anyone have an opinion on this?

I've been playing Hockey since way back in the last century and there was no shortages of Irish, Swede's, Norwegian's, Germans, Canadians, Frenchmen, Russians, Austrians, Italians, Brits, Indians, Polish, and Catholics and that was just in my neighborhood. Not to mention that bunch of Lutherans up the street a piece! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/laugh.gif ALT=":lol"> That's just the tip of the iceberg. Sicilians usually played goalie and most of the Finlanders at the time rode the pine. We had an Israelite who played defense but he had a heck of a time skating backwards. ( sad but true) I suppose we are short on Australians and Jamaicans and Cubans and Mexicans but the thing that puzzles me is the apparent lack of Eskimo's and South Polians because those folks have ice all around them all of the time! What's up with that? <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/ohwell.gif ALT=":\"> Afro Americans/Canadians are in the NHL and so are some of Asian descent. There must be some pretty good Chinese and Japanese players because everything seems to be made over there. I mean KOHO....What's that? Amen Slappy. It's funny that just because you don't see a lot of Latinos or African Americans playing hockey, it gets labeled as a non-diverse sport. I think your list should pretty much put an end to that discussion. I mean, I know it won't, but I think it should. I don't think it is necessarily a problem, and i dont think that this is what he is asking. There is definately little racial diversity in the sport, and in this paper he is probably just looking for the causes, an interesting topic for a paper. First of all, I would definately not use this as a source. There is a credability issue. You don't know any of us, and I don't think there would be any experts on this here anyways. Ill give you my two cents anyways, though. If you look at it geographically, hockey is typically played in colder climates. In the north, especially when you get away from large cities, the population is predominantly caucasian. Another reason would be that even though negroes (or other non-caucasians) have gained all the rights that caucasians have, they are still disadvantaged in today's society. Hockey takes a considerable amount of money to play. On Average, white people are better off. (In a paper I would try to brain storm some reasons why they are better off) I hope this helps a little to give you a couple ideas, but I repeat, DO NOT use this site as a source.

he or she should question why even in colder climates, the schools offer basketball courts for free, and put multiple courts in every school, elementary and secondary . where are the rinks? its hockey that gets discriminated. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/embarassed.gif ALT=":o">

And the city will say they don't want to back it because it will only benefit "a small portion of the population." I remember when we were trying to get an arena built in Sartell. It took the hockey association years to get the fundings. It was just only road block after another, the econonmy started going downhill, the school's funding was reduced. It was amazing that we ever pulled it off.

the maintenance required for a basketball court in MN could be very high considering heating costs. our school districts have mostly made local municipalities foot the bill for hockey. this serves the masses and ignores heritage. many native americans have been risen to folk hero status in this state. now we are cutting the edge with womens and girls hockey. your local rink serves all that are willing to commit, but the school district just pays rent. it is an oxymoron--the opportunities are not equal because schools are not willing to equip 20 guys but will bend over for 60 footballers.

For a clarification of what the term "race" really means from an Anthropological stand point (which makes much more sense in this context) check here: <a href="http://www.physanth.org/positions/race. ...  Most biologists don't recognize race as having a meaning from a genetic standpoint. Anyway... I think that cost and location are the two biggest factors in why hockey as perceived as not being diverse. As other people having mentioned it is actually quite diverse from a cultural and ethnic standpoint. As for hockey vs. basketball> It must just be where I grew up, because to the best of my recollection every place that had an outdoor basketball court also had a hockey rink. I guess that is northern MN for you.

I agree with you guys. The better topic for a paper would be "Religion in Hockey Today". The writer could explore the mystery of why the Catholics do so well. He could state a hypothesis that the Catholic player is superior and go from there. Say, wait a minute, If I am not mistaken, there was a thread on this fine forum covering this issue. I think there were a lot of expert opinions offered. So, StaySqure's choice of this forum as a research source is an excellent one. Yup, If the liberal racists are so concerned about what the color of a hockey player's skin is, let them build some rinks with the taxes they keep pouring on us. Otherwise, lets just worry about whats inside a hockey player instead of what his skin pigment is. And , of course, what his religion is.

Who is concerned with race in hockey? It isn't a problem, just a fact. I have never heard anyone complain about this topic.
