my tourney thoughts

Post by spudfan25 »

I was at the tourney for Thursday night session and all games at the Xcel on Friday and Saturday. Here is what I saw and I was wondering if others thought the same.
1)Hooking whenever somebody beat the defense that was called maybe half the time. I did not see any great officiating all weekend.
2)This is pertaining to the spuds, but what happened to the passing we have seen all year. Except for one period against Duluth the spuds had a hard time getting the puck to each other.
3)Did anybody else notice that the spuds had a hard time keeping the puck on their sticks. They are normally very solid puck handlers, but the puck seemed to always be upright and getting away from them.
So did quality of oppenents cause 2 and 3 or was it the ice? I look at the biggest what if of last night as the 5 minute major. Yeah they killed it but maybe just maybe if thats a 2 minute penalty they get that one shot they needed off in those other 3 minutes.

Would someone defend the 5 minute major to me? As far as I saw, it was definately a 2 minute penalty, but it looked no different than any other penalty except it took a long time to get up. I felt bad for teh Cent kid, but that doesnt mean you penalize the other team extra.

If this is the case, I say everyone acts hurt after getting hit dirty.

major

I was in a suite at the xcel last night so we had a tv to see the replay on and I thought it was a 2 minute penalty. I dont want to blame the loss on anything but the spuds not scoring, but there was a lot of hooking and holding not getting called when the spuds would get across the blueline in 1 on 1 and 1 on 2 situtations.

Spuds

Post by Jesrober »

I will agree I don't think the spuds passed as well as I have seen them do the rest of the year. I saw the hit and it didn't look like a major to me I have the tape of the game I just haven't worked up the courage to watch it yet, but I cant help thinking what if there wasn't a penalty and the spuds got that extra shot that went past stutz. Either way great work spuds and hopefully they will bring the championship home next year.

I thought this was a part of the "clutch & grab" style that is growing in the high school level? I think both squads were getting away with plenty. Somebody mentioned earlier that this is the exact reason why Sweden is producing better crops. Less skill is allowed to shine, and this is also why the NHL has not been all that impressive over the years. I see strength as a gift for some of these players, but I do not necessarily call that talent. Checking and brawling are aspects that grew from the sports beginnings, but it is hard for me to say it is at best a skill and not raw talent. In a way this is why the girls game is more talent-oriented than the boys.

Great Game

Post by centerman »

This game was low scoring because of great defensemen on both teams and also because both teams are extremely well coached. Centennial had more quality chances but Hittle was solid. Moorhead didn't get many second chances because the Centennial team kept Moorhead away from the net. The forwards were continually picking their man up.

The 5 minute major had to be called because blood was drawn. In the end Moorhead had more minutes on the PP.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

five minute major

Post by RinkRat10506 »

I saw the game on t.v. and saw the replay it was a penalty but it was one of the weaker boarding calls of any of the others I seen in the tourney this year, I think a major was way overdoing it. Yeah he got hurt but the penalty was the same as a minor.

isnt the blood drawing rule only in the NHL? I might be wrong but I didnt think that the rule applied to high school games.

5 minute

there is no "blood rule" in MN HS hockey (even Nanne can't get it right!). You might call it a survival call, it definitely was a check from behind into the boards. Call it a minor and your going to be in trouble the rest of the game, call it a check from behind and you will need to DQ the kid (into the boards from behind, 5 min/DQ), so call it a major for Boarding and the game goes on...
