Austin has the whole team coming back next year. Mankato West loses their goalie, Jenny Gorny (an important cog) to graduation, but have the bulk of a good team returning. Albert Lea was inconsistant last season, even with Laura Hillman who's graduating. Teams better not underestimate Faribault next year. They'll be contending in 1AA.

Faribault is the definite sleeper. They will surprise everyone. Albert Lea will be decent with their coaching as their strength. Austin has 1 or 2 outstanding players but always struggle with Mankato West. Faribault and Albert Lea always give Austin problems also. It wil be a interesting section with 4 close teams.

As much as I hate to say this, Austin is the team to beat in Section 1A. I would think that West has the best chance to knock them off, maybe Faribo, but all roads to State go thru Austin in '07. Albert Lea is still a couple years away from competing for the section title, they're still very young with some of their better players only Sophs and Freshmen.

AL

Anyone buying the Tigers to be any good? They lose Hillman, which was a big loss, but I think it offers a great opportunity for this young team to become more of a balanced offense. Christensen will be back, along with Klick and they also pick up a player named Amy Gackstetter. She played on the bantam team last year, could be either a solid defenseman or she can shoot the puck. I wouldn't sleep on this team, too much talent.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have been a little lax in reviewing the new girls sections outside of my area...and I just looked at the new section 1A. This is going to be a tough section to get out of!

Austin and Alber Lea will both be very tough, and I would give my nod to Austin...they are pretty physical, play good defense, and if Kristin Faber plays up to her potential for an "entire game" they could play with most anyone.

I just watched Fairbault play a game in the Minnesota Showcase on Sunday and they will be very tough this year and Mankato West could definitly play the spoiler when it comes to playoff time.
So far the voters seem to like Austin with Faribault/AL picking up a tie for second essentially...

Here's how I see it...
1. Austin
2. Faribo
3. West
4. Albert Lea

Austin is loaded with Seniors, they return the whole team.
Faribo is fast, I think they're a bit young, not too many Seniors.
West is strong defensively but lost a few from last season's team.
AL is very young, a bit slow and lost a ton of scoring to graduation.

I don't see anyone knocking off Austin, but you could just about flip a coin to see how the next 3 will fall into place. I can see Faribo, West and AL beating up on each other for 2nd. I don't know anything Northfield. What about Northfield's chances?

I see it as a toss up between four teams, with Austin having a slight, I repeat slight edge. There has been some attrition on the other teams but Austin can't sweep these teams and anything can happen in the section tournament. Last year I believe Austin never beat Mankato West, Split with both Albert Lea and Faribault. Anything can happen and Austin is not a big enough favorite. I see Faribault taking the section championship.

Austin tourney

Post by RSI »

Here are the pairings for the Austin Christmas tourney.

Austin vs. Mankato East
Lakeville South vs. Fairmont
Albert Lea vs. Blaine
MPLS Novas vs. Northfield

Any thoughts?

I thought it was nice of Austin to schedule a conference game against East during their home tourney. I guess that's one way to get to the Championship side of a bracket.

This is a common practice. Coaches do this so that they can have a conf. team in their tourney &/or to be able to schedule other NC games on a Conf. date.

SSP/NSP are doing this this year @ Kaposia.

Sibley/Simley did this last year @ Burnsville.

Etc...

Thanks GHS, that's news to me. Do you know anything about Blaine, South, Northfield or the Novas? I've all the other teams play in past years, but I have no idea what to expect from the other teams. I assume Blaine and South have pretty good teams as they have fairly large enrollments and solid youth programs.

Just curious; why isn't Blaine in the Schwann Cup?

Blaine has who I believe is the top Ms Goalie candidate and some young talented players. Many say that Blaine may have better odds at making State this year than in all the years that the section was so packed with amazing teams.

LVS has a very young team that will do well in time. Reminds me a bit of a Kennedy team from a few years back, but I don't know if the level of talent in the youth of that LVS team is the same. LVS lost in 2OT to my Simley squad last year in secions even though we outshot them 60-40. They had two 7th grade goalies playing V last year and one played outstanding in the section game. http://www.esportsdesk.com/leagues/hock ... eID=298185 Former B. Jefferson coach Wilkinson taked over for LVS after Harvey moved to Eastview.

Novas I'm not as up to speed on & same with Northfield, but I will say that Novas have a great coach and a group of kids that could do some good things these next couple years with some young talent & hard working group. The Novas have a website at: http://www.minneapolisnovas.com/

I talked to a close friend of mine, who is very involved in the development of the girls hockey program in Austin, and has worked with this group for years. He said Austin had to play Mankato East in this tourney and count it as there conference game. This helped East to get the funding for this tourney. The only way to guarantee them to meet was to schedule them to play the first game. He also said they try to seed the tourney and have been very successful in the past with the final games being 1 goal games or OT wins. I would say looking at the records and history the top four are Blaine, Lakeville S, Austin, and the Novas. I know he loves to play the toughest games he can and said he would love to play Blaine, Lakeville, and novas. He also stated that last year Austin won the tournament beating Orono by 4, Spring Lake Park by 3, and Novas by 3. Should be a interesting tourney to watch. Bottom line is he said the visiting girls had a blast and ate lots of SPAM.

Now that we have rosters to look at...I got my information from MSHSL website

Faribo
6 Seniors
7 Juniors
1 Sophs
1 Frosh

Austin
7 Seniors
4 Juniors
2 Sophs
1 Frosh
4 8th graders

Mankato West
3 Seniors
3 Juniors
3 Sophs
2 Sophs
2 Frosh
6 8th graders

Albert Lea
3 Seniors
3 Juniors
6 Sophs
3 Frosh
3 8th graders

It looks to me like Austin and Faribo have age and experience in their favor. Maybe Faribo isn't a "darkhorse" after all...it should be between Austin and Faribo. Can Faribo (or anybody) contain Faber and Austin's first line?

should be a tight race.. nobody will walk away with the title without a fight. austin is solid. faribo has experience. mankato west has good players but no goalie. albert lea is young yet solid. Hopefully these are the top four teams in the section. Faribo could upset austin. albert lea has beat mankato west in sections the past 2 years being the higher and lower seed so they could be a spoiler. It all depends who is playing their best hockey come january

I don't mean to knock my local club, but I just don't see Albert Lea as a contender just yet. Next year maybe, but this year they're probably only a top 4 team in Section 1A. They're just way too young with only 3 Seniors and 3 Juniors. They do have some ability in those younger girls, but it's tough to get the consistency you need when you have a team as young as that.

I still think Austin is the team to beat, followed by Faribo and then West.

AL may not be a top 4 team after all. I know it's very early, but AL didn't do too much to impress me in their 3-1 loss to Northfield last night. AL needs to cut down on the give-aways, way too many times AL just slapped the puck away or dumped it when they had room. They'll get better as they are well coached. AL did manage to outshoot NFLD 31-17. The NFLD goalie, who was solid, wasn't really challenged by many of those shots.
Northfield is extremely young with only 1 Senior and 1 Junior. I thought NFLD moved the puck better than AL and had some nice speed. For an early season game NFLD did some good things.

Albert Lea really might not have the horses this year...

Both goalies are solid, but they do not have a single great line in front of them, and the defense is young.

Most of the shots on goal have been relatively weak. The forwards need to work together better and share the puck more in the other team's zone.

But overall, they will be a much better team come Section Tourney time.

I know it's early but has anybody noticed what Faribo has done so far?
5-2 win over Northfield
4-2 win over Mankato West

Nice start...
