Orono has a solid coaching staff and should be pretty good while playing one of the tougher schedules in class "A".

I don't know a lot about teams in this section, but I know that Shakopee had some good wins and close losses to good teams last year. Did they lose much to graduation? I've also heard that Breck added to their team. How much better can they be?

Breck has added (Haller & Barton) but lost too? I shouldn't speculate, but I thought they lost one key player. I believe they have the Swiontkowski gal too and she's a strong player I believe.

From what I hear Shakopee lost 3 to Graduation and a very good 9th grader and solid D Broderson to Breck.
So far this year they have played some very good teams and suprised a few of those with ties or OT losses.
Breck has gotten some very good and young tallent from the SW Mostly 8th 9th and 10th graders.

I've seen Breck three times now and you've got to give them all the credit in the world for going undefeated so far. There strengths are good coaching as evidenced by their passing and positional play, good balance across their entire lineup and two very good goaltenders. No huge superstars but that could change over the next few years as they are young and will only get better. All that said, they are somewhat fortunate to be unbeaten at this stage, thanks to a weaker-than-average schedule and some opportunistic goal scoring, their last game against Armstong being a case in point. It will be interesting how they do in the next 30 days, particularly against Blake which will be a real test for them.

I just want to make sure I get credit for calling this one back on June 20!:

As most have heard, coach Herb Harvey has left Lakeville South for Eastview and his daughter may follow. Another south player Andy Foss has transfered to Breck. Andy was the best player in her age group at LSHS and will be hard to replace. At season's end last year a number of players talked about leaving, we will see in the next few months what is left at South. North seems to be holding onto all off their players. Anyone heard of any more tranfers at either school?

Note to all - Breck will have a very good team next year. I heard of two other players that will be coming in too.

What Gives?

Post by hshockeyfan91 »

I am really surprised by the seeding in this section. Here is the info from the final regular season rankings for this section:

RK 2/1 RK PV TEAM RATING RK SOS W L T
21 6A 5 5 Breck 89.172 73 67.040 21 4 0
49 12A 12 11 Shakopee 17.480 61 58.240 12 9 4
64 17A 18 17 Mound-Westonka 10.273 88 74.960 16 9 0
79 24 25 St. Louis Park 4.359 43 48.720 5 18 2
88 28 28 Orono 2.674 96 77.440 10 13 2
100 37 37 Hutchinson 0.597 67 63.435 4 19 0
111 43 43 Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato 0.208 105 81.800 4 19 2

How did Mound jump past Shakopee in the section seeds? yeh, Mound beat Shakopee a month ago, but if that's the primary criteria, then the fact that St Louis Park beat Mound 2 days ago should have caused Park to jump ahead of Mound.

Shakopee beat Eastview, lost to AHA by 1 goal and tied Edina. Did Mound do anything even remotely close to that?

Compare SLP's strength of schedule to Orono. Park played BSM, Eastview and Irondale twice, and played Hopkins, Eagan and other strong AA programs as well. I'm not even sure than Orono played anyone who was AA. In addition, SLP beat Richfield and Mound - ranked A teams. Did Orono beat anyone in that category?

Obviously the computer ranking system and the LPH rankings are not flawless, but still they generate some significant questions.

It looks like the seeding was totally based on record, regardless of SOS. If the coaches in this section are going to do seeding on that loose of a basis, they would have been more accurate to just use the computerized rankings - it would have been just as easy, and more accurate.

I agree with you, however I don't think Hutch or Litchfield have enough to upset either of these teams on their way to a meeting in the semi-finals. I like Shakopee to meet Breck in the final.
