WERE GIRLS ALLOWED TO PLAY ON BOYS HIGH SCHOOL HOCKEY TEAMS?
Hi,
I'm researching Minnesota High School Hockey. If anyone could help me, it would be greatly appreciated.
1. Anyone know of any girls who played on any sanctioned boys high
school ice hockey team, during the 50s or 60s?
2. Were high school games played on outdoor ice rings?
Thank You
Rustyroy

I would highly doubt there were any female hockey players on high school teams back in the 50s and 60s.
As for the arenas, most high schools played outdoors until probably the mid to late 60s or early 70s. I'm only 33 so I can't give an exact time frame. I actually saw a report about a year ago that there is still one school that plays outdoors.

Girls on Boys teams
If my memory is still good I belive there was a girl goalie that played
on the St Bernard's boys hockey team in the late 80's.I also think
she went on to play D3 mens hockey also but I cannot remember
her name.

Girls on Boys Teams
My source, who played in the 60's and 70's in the Twin Cities does not remember any girls playing hockey on boys teams and certainly not HS. Rumor has it that there was a girl, Theresa Bonnin, whose brother played D1 Providence, who was quite good. She would put her hair up and play hockey at the Park Boards until her identity was discovered and she was kicked off the ice.
We've certainly come a long way!

Jen Hanley played G @ Edina w/Boys and then @ Hamline (D3 MIAC) for a couple years. Was first female G to win a men's D3 hockey game as Goalie I believe. She left Hamline a year before I got there as a player I believe. Went to UST to finish up with the Women?Stillh2ofan wrote:If my memory is still good I belive there was a girl goalie that played

I remember playing against Winny Brodt in PeeWees too, but not sure what she did boys HS wise before finishing with the girls HS?

Re: Girls on Boys Teams
This reminds me of a gal that played @ Roseville HS. She was a St. paul girl that played on an amazing boys PeeWee A team from Como a few years back. That team went through regions (or whatever they're called) and she finally let her hair down in state I believe. Thought that was kind of neat as it then let everyone know there was a girl playing on one of the top boys PeeWee teams in the state (like Winny Brodt did @ RV back in the day)...Thunderbird77 wrote:My source, who played in the 60's and 70's in the Twin Cities does not remember any girls playing hockey on boys teams and certainly not HS. Way back, 1978-79 ish, there was a girl that played "A" Bantams for Bloomington,,I don't think she went on to play Varsity but maybe JV? Don't know the name, she was a tall African-American with great hands. A true pioneer for girls, thats for sure...

Also wasn't there a girl goalie for Farmington or lakeville in the late 80's early 90's that played in the State tourney, when it was tier I & II? If memory serves me she also played HS football!

First Girl to play on a boy's team
I am pretty sure it was Sue Farniak of Delano in 1982 or 1983. She was a goalie on the JV team but due to the varsity goalie injuring himself before the season started she started the season and played a few games. She was pretty good. I am not positive about this but I do not believe that Jen Hanley played any games on the varsity team for Edina but did dress. She possibly played a game or two. I know she played JV for them however. In the early or mid 90's, Amber Heglund started for Farmington as a forward and is the first girl to participate in the state tournament on a boy's team. Other girl's that I know of to play high school with the boy's teams on the JV level were Krissy Wendell of Park Center in the late 90's and Dagney Wiley of Osseo just recently. Thanks to all. Mister Hockey!!!

Another Player
Jody Horak of Blaine played two years of A peewee and two years of A bantam for Blaine and was the captain of the team in her second year of each. She played boy's JV for Blaine and I believe dressed in the state tournament for the Varsity team in 1999. She then played Varsity girl's her final two years and dominated with winning the Goaltender of the year award from Let's Play Hockey her final year. Have a good day. Mister Hockey!!!
