"Unknown" is relative - to whom? It can vary depending on whether you are talking about the general public or avid followers of the girls' game.

Generally speaking, many of the best "unknown" players (to the average observer) are your defensive defensemen. They totally shut down the other team when they are out there, and coming out of the zone they are adept at moving the puck quickly to their forwards, rather than try to make end-to-end rushes every time they get the puck. They don't get much publicity because they aren't the leading scorers on their team, but they make a big difference in the outcomes of many games.

One such player last year was Tracy Johnson of Benilde-St. Margaret's. She didn't score a ton of points, but was an AP All-State selection (one of just 6 in the whole state). She got a Division I scholarship to Boston College, so the scouts definitely took note of her ability, even thought she didn't get many headlines.

Stacey Hull is a VERY good defense for the GRG Lightning and no one ever hears her name.

If she's the 9th Grade F that is #20 - she's the real deal. Keep an eye on this one!

I consider her as a "known" player. She's that good.

Same with this one. A known player in my mind, but just my opinion... I've also seem more G HS Hockey than the average person I suppose, so maybe "known" to me is still unknown to many others...

Goalies

Post by keepitreal »

Kari Hunter, the junior goalie for the young and hopelessly out-gunned Bloomington Kennedy team will never be at the top of the W-L list, but she may face the most shots of anyone this season. She opened some eyes with a 66 save shutout earlier this year, and routinely faces 40 shots a game.

Most recently, Hunter faced 41 shots in a 1-0 loss to Apple Valley. What is most telling is the total number of shots recorded by Kennedy in that game-- 4. When the ice is tipped that far to one end night after night, any goalie who withstands that kind of pressure deserves serious recognition. I'm sure there are some other unknown goalies, probably on outstate teams, who deserve the same recognition.

This I agree with.

One Goalie that isn't from MN but deserves this sort of credit is the New Richmond G - Lea JONDAL. Some college coach will pick this kid up and have found an OUTSTANDING goalie (IMHO) - a Jr or Sr I think - wish I had compelte stats...:

I agree with you. Gina Mcdonald(Irondale) is a very good player. She is very young and will only get better. She can put the puck in the net.

I could see Irondale making it to the State Tourney soon with this young talent.

i'd have to agree with you. next year will be tough with the loss of Udvig and Brashhun (spelling?). those two and Udvig's defensive partner Deena Schnider (spelling?). this might be the year for the knights

Carly Gorecki sophomore goalie for Mahtomedi. This is her first year at the varsity level. She's had two shutouts and doing fairly well this season for mediocre Mahtomedi. (yes mediocre, because without Laura May they are not mediocre).

Jenna Travis, sophmore D from Centennial. I watched her at the Fresh/Soph Development Camp last summer at Breezy.

How about.......

Kate Matanich from Eveleth-Gilbert?

Been starting since 8th grade. Lots of points over the years on a relatively weaker team.

Becca MacRostie the junior goalie for the St. Paul Blades. She is playing behind a very weak team but without her talent they could be losing by double or triple the scores.

She's one that deserves more publicity.

I'm not so sure she's unknown anymore since LPH did a little write-up on her, but Liz Maidl. Just a Sophomore and the starting goalie on what is basically a first year team at Rochester Century. Her teammates do the best they can but she sees A LOT of rubber and still holds her own. Near as I can tell her save % is .890
