Post by hotdog »

Does anyone know what the 4 period rule is? Has this rule changed?

Any combination of JV / Varsity to not except 4 periods.

if you plan to play one of JV and Three of varsity but while playing on JV you get a penalty in the last moments of the first and it causes you to come back for the second to finish out you time in the box, you just lost a varsity period too.
now only two are left is how i thought it went.

P.S. I believe overtime does not count

It isn't ANY combination of 4 JV/V. You CANNOT play 4 periods in a row. (atleast in boys, pretty sure girls too).

The penalty box scenario...I've seen many times where the team just puts a different player in the box, hence, the player can still play 3 varsity.

I am fairly sure the 4 period in a row rule has been removed, it's any 4 periods this year.

Any 4 periods. You can play 4 in a row now. That language was removed this season. This is for boys & girls.

Coaches just shouldn't allow those 4-period player to play the last 2 minutes of the period if they aren't supposed to play the next period as a penalty would take them into the next period (unless you allow the other team to score to get the penalty done).

Where this gets interesting is if you play a 3JV, 1V or any other situation where a kid could take a penalty in the last 2 minutes of their last V period. If it carries over into next period, the V game is a forfeit I believe. So, those are the tricky situations. Most coaches can avoid this with some planning.

OT "counts" but it's viewed as an extension of the 3rd period, so if the 3rd period is played by a 4-period player they are OK for OT. If you play a 4-period player in OT who did NOT play in the third period - you've just played them a 5th period and the game is a forfeit.

Looked it up a pasted it below for the MSHSL web page. Hockey, Boys & Girl. This is the Daily Limit desription.

No student shall participate in more than four (4) periods on any given day. Exception: Any school whose 9th, 10th, or B-squad schedule has less than the maximum allowable number of varsity games may schedule four-team tournament for such 9th, 10th, or B-squad teams to bring the number of games to the allowable total. A maximum number of two (2) such tournaments may be scheduled per level. Each game in a tournament will count as one (1) contest. A player may participate in a maximum of six (6) periods per day in such tournaments. Participation in any period counts as one (1) period in administering the rules.
All games scheduled and played as stated under non-MSHSL tournaments count toward daily player participation limitations.
Exception: The spare goalie is an exception to the periods per day rule in case of injury or illness to the regular goalie during the games scheduled on that day.

boblee, it does not mention the 4 in a row thing.
I have not seen someone else fullfill somebody penilty either. so you could be right. I'v always seen and heard that the player getting the penilty serves the time and losses varsity.

I just asked around quick and GHS was right...that language no longer exists.

this did just change slightly with the language removal. Anyone who has played multiple seasons with JV & V teams and only about 20 players each season has to learn these well, else they end up in trouble!
