Calling all AA-bantam coaches

The Forest Lake AA-Bantams are looking for three teams interested in a four team scrimmagefest on Oct. 19th. Two hours of competition for the price of one. Give me a call if interested. Bill Coleman - Forest Lake AA-Bantam Coach. 651-278-3983

In the late 80's the entire NCHA were either USHL or BCHL players. A high school kid wouldn't have a chance back then. The MIAC were all out of high school. Then I think the MIAC started getting some new coaches who were hungry enough to win to start recruiting the JR players. Scotty Bell found succ...

Duluth East

I have to chime in now. I understand the bitter feelings of those who have "outsiders" enter their world and take ice time. It also sucks when someone else gets the promotion at the work place. I'm also a bit embarrassed for those who go to such lengths as to move their family so they can ...

Forest Lake

New Head Coach at Forest Lake as of today is Ryan Sauter. He will do a great job. He coached the JV last season and has about about a million years worth of coaching experience before that. He is just what the program needs. If the girls follow him, and they will, FL will surely start to make waves ...

Much fun here. I just scrolled through this thing and there was no mention of a Columbia Heights team in the mid to late 80s. Tom Palkowski, Tom and Billy Peterson, DJ Haller, his older brother, (Lou Nanne loved him), Dave Olsen and a goalie named Reggie. I think they won the state title in Peewees,...

Goalie Pad. You wrote when a parent sees something "unethical" happening on the team it is up to the parent to stand up for the student. This is the problem, and what I was saying earlier. What 'you' as a parent deem unethical is most of the time simply a decision that kept your kid off th...

I used to work in the newspaper biz as a reporter. Just like in coaching, you have to have thick skin and understand how many nut cases are really out there in the world. In every edition of the paper someone would read a quote or sentence backwards, or the exact opposite way everyone else in the wo...

That's great. I'm just saying it's all too much. Everything has to be just so. Fancy warm up suits, expensive jerseys, music between game stoppages. The team locker rooms for most HS teams look like NHL locker rooms. Teams fund-raise real hard for all this stuff. I don't see why? To me it's like the...

"How Captain's Practice was Designed." This is getting crazy now. Really? Captain's practice started as something kids did because they were antsy to hit the ice and get the rust off a little bit. You know, have a little extra fun before the season starts. But like the rest of the game, CP...

Who are you Oldgoalie85? I started this post to see if it was kosher to sit in on captains practices and I think I've found my answer. Thanks all!

Huh? What do you mean Oldgoalie? How did you run captain's practice? When did organized captain's practices start anyway? I figure back in the day kids who wanted to get a step up on the competition simply got on the ice early and started practicing. That's how it was in the 80's anyway. We raised o...

Gretzky's father Walter used to have his son watch games on tv and on a piece rink drawn on paper follow the puck where it goes. He believed it taught him where the puck tends to travel and where the open spots are on the ice. Also helped a player learn to anticipate. This last point is really what ...

What I think is sad is that we as parents seem to do WAAAAY to much for our kids. You know how we can teach leadership? Let them do some things for themselves. I believe the kids should raise money for their own captains practices. I believe they should be able to figure it out on their own. We did ...

Hartzell

I played for Hartzell in the mid eighties. He's a great coach. Sticks up for his players. Challenges them. If a team emulates its coach then he would bring grit to his team for sure. He reminds me of Hackstall a bit.

I believe there is a solid number of mites this year and a talented group to boot. As far as the HS goes, I believe there are not enough 14U eligible girls to make up a FL team, so they are opting to play at the HS level. As stated, it would be better for those girls to play association hockey for s...

As far as the FL concerns: the head coach has sent the word out that U12 players should stay in U12. It's my understanding that if there was a U14 in FL the same would go for them also, but there isn't. So do you ship the kids to White Bear or get them in the program. Tough call I say?

I hear you, some head coaches like the title and are uninterested in actually building a program. However, back to the original question. It sounds like it IS legal to be in the rink during captains practice but nobody does it or sees it happening. I think most people, coaches included, believe it's...

I find it hard to believe coaches don't try to get a leg up on other teams by controlling captains practices. Heck, if you could sit in the stands you could have your varsity and jv picked on day 1.

I looked up the rule and it's very vague the way it's written. It says the HS coaches are not to participate in any way and it's the responsibility of the school district to make sure the intent of the rule is followed. This leaves one wondering what the intent or spirit of the rule really is. It do...

What about Kevin Hartzell? He's a hell of a coach, put in his time in the USHL and an ex-gopher captain I believe.

Captain's practices

I was wondering about captains practices around the state. How many practices do teams have generally and do coaches really keep their noses out or are coaches simply running practices through a volunteer?
