What is there some secert code and you get the decoder ring after you pass the reffing test? Give me a break, some guys reffing never played hockey. I have been around it my whole life as a player, coach and fan of the sport so don't tell me that only a ref knows what a penalty is and isn't. The guy we had the other night couldn't even keep up with the play of the game yet he made a checking from behind call from the red line when the play was in the corner. The players were shoulder to shoulder going along the corner when the outside player rubbed the other player out causing him to turn into the boards. It was more of a glacing blow he didn't bury the kid into the boards from behind, they were shoulder to shoulder and he checked him the way he should have. No hands to the face, no stick in the air just a nice clean HARD check. and the HARD part and the fact the guy was too far behind the play is why he called the penalty.theref wrote:As a referee, there is only so much we can do for certain types of penalties. On something such as a leg check or kneeing, if a player is injuered, we can call a 5 minute major + game misconduct, which means the player misses the remainder of that game and the next game for that team.
We are not allowed to punish due to the extent of an injury, that would fall into USA or MN hockey's hands.
The only time we may have any input on a several game suspension is when a match penalty is called, however match penalties are used for extremely severe cases such as a player going onto an opposing teams bench to injur a coach or a coach coming after a player on the ice.
As for the intereference, I'm sure there are a few officials still getting the hang of what is and is not interference. Or you may also be seeing some things differently than the official is because if you are not an official, you probably don't look for the same things we do when penalties are involved.
Remember, just like a lot of this is new for players and coaches, it is also new for many of the officials. So I believe there will probably be a learning period for them as well.

Since you know so much, you should become a ref. I can get you the number to your district coordinator. We would love to have you as we are always short on numbers due to the abusive officials take. Let me know if you are interested so that you can replace the referee you mentioned. We would love to have you.

I think that if you want to develop kids to go to the next level (Jrs, College, NHL) this is the way it has to be. All refs may not call the game the same, but it was that way last year too. Every ref has their own style. Probably shouldn't but it's true. There will never be anything you can do about that. I don't think you can base a judgement after one year. I think you have to give this a few years and see what happens. Sure the older kids have it tough, but just thing what the Bantams will look like in 4 years. It is going to be some of the best hockey this state has ever seen!!! I can't wait!!!

plan on starting after my boys leave association hockey. don't worry I will put my money where my mouth is. Someone has mentioned on this board before about video taping some games and having the refs review them, what is wrong with that? Do you think that is way off or what? Say they just had 2 games a year taped and reviewed.theref wrote:Since you know so much, you should become a ref. I can get you the number to your district coordinator. No, I think taping the games would be a great idea. Especially if they could be sent to the district officials supervisors and evaluators. We would love that extra help since we have probably one evaluator for every 20 refs. Plus those evaluators have to ref themselves, so they often don't get a chance to see many of the refs they need to see. Take it up with your coaches and district officials supervisor, they may like the idea.

I am all for making the game safer and improving the flow, but the interference calls on face offs are starting to annoy me! I guess I can live with being annoyed, but I cannot take much more of the hip checks almost always turning into tripping calls. Most kids are really trying to make legit checks and should NOT be penalized because the other (usually smaller) kid lands on his butt.
As a side note: I enjoy watching the non verbals and other interactions that occur between refs during a game. If one is a jerk, the other tends to over compensate. If one is on a power trip and the other is less experienced, the less experienced one basically shuts down. If they both have great personalities and get along, then they tend to be fair and the game is fun for all involved.
Ciao!

I'm just curious as to whether or not you are an official or if you are just speculating on what should or should not be a penalty.

Coach: PeeWees
Fan: All levels
1) The game is better this way. One exception: I sure do hate that stick-on-stick hooking call.
2) I agree that it has been inconsistent from game to game. Fortunately, it has been mostly consistent within any given game.
3) I would like to see another revision of the S.O.P. focusing on illegal contact to the head. In my opinion, this is a much larger issue at the PeeWee level than the obstructions. I love physical hockey .... I hate gloves and elbows to the head. Facemasks will never come back off, so let's get on with fixing it.

Dear Mr. Ref,
I should not even answer you because you seem to be looking for an arguement with every post you make.
No, I am not a ref. I am the adult child of a long retired (and sadly deceased) CHL pro turned ref. I lived and breathed hockey everyday for 45 years. I am a parent who has had A players, varsity players, B players and even one non-player. I understand the game and I enjoy the game and I have zero intentions of ever reffing.
Elliot asked for OPINIONS on how the reffing could be improved and I responded.

Feedback?
Elliott,
Thanks for taking the time to get some outside opinions. I wish MH had more people willing to do that.
Was there any feedback or discussions on the subject?

No discussion on the subject. I believe everything is being summarized for USA Hockey (President & VP Youth Council were at the meetigns) and for us to review later (April).
Of course, we spent time debating the planning committee's direction and if a new system of electing board members was mandated and/or needed.
