David Beckham coming Stateside

Post by iceprofet07 »

If anybody is following this: is it worth it? The galaxy (I think) are going to pay him something like $250 million over 5 years to try and boost the popularity of the MLS. To me it seems like a financial disaster, but there is the outside chance that it might give the league increased legitimacy on a world stage.

Can the one person who cares about soccer (espically on a professional level) please step forward and answer the question?

Who Cares?????????

Post by Ghetto Steve »

I won't care about professional soccer games until 2010. It will take WAY more than Beckham to get me interested in soccer here in the MLS.

So I don't care.

he is a great player, but coming to the states is a good idea for him. You can only play european soccer at a good level for so long. He is getting old and no one would want him there is the near future.

Best thing possible happened. He is a big name, great player and will get interest in soccer where there previously was none. There was no way anyone like Ronaldo or Henry was coming over, so this is the best the US could get and it works out very well for Beckham. He was losing favor in Europe and gets to come to the US and be the centerpiece.

I've got this one ref.
So Johnny, why do you think Beckham would be a good skater? What has he done that would lead you to that conclusion? :-k

Btw, he isn't getting $250 million over 5 years. He gets $5 million a year for salary and then gets a portion of merchandise sales and stuff like that.

The only way that this move matters is if the MLS is going to be considered "legit", and a 31 year old Beckham is not going to do it. The MLS needs top-notch competition and I frankly don't think that America will get any big time Ronaldinho, Henry type players. So this move may just be useless.

The attendance of games might go up, but you won't see young boys in the stands in awe and saying "I wanna be a professional soccer player!"There are going to be about 5,000+ 14-30 year old women in the stands going "OMG he is soooo hot!" He won't have enough effect to change soccer in the states. There are too many other sports or things to do and we won't ever see Hooligans stateside like they have over in Europe. I don't think there are any bigger rivalries in the world than the English Premier teams have.

I think a better question would be does anyone really care. (NO)
