Falls to Russia, 5-3, in Memorial of Ivan Hlinka Opener

Four Power-Play Goals Propel Russia Past Team USA

PIESTANY, Slovakia – The U.S. Under-18 Select Team fell to Russia, 5-3, here today in the opening game of the 2007 Under-18 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka at Zimny Stadium. Russia tallied four power-play goals in the win.

“We started a little flat, but got better as the game went on,” said Team USA Head Coach Roger Grillo (North Kingstown, R.I.). “While it was disappointing to lose the game, there were a lot of positives that we can take into the next game and the rest of the tournament.”

Russia’s Evgeni Gravchev netted his team’s only even-strength goal at the 2:03 mark of the first period to open the game’s scoring. Igor Golovkov added a power-play goal late in the period to give Russia a 2-0 advantage.

In the second frame, Russia extended its lead to 3-0 at 5:34 before Team USA got on the board. With a two-man advantage, Jordy Murray (Faribault, Minn.) sent a pass across the crease to Philip McRae (Chesterfield, Mo.), who tapped it past Russian goaltender Danila Alistratov at 10:00 to cut the deficit to two goals heading into the final stanza.

Russia took a 4-1 lead in the third period when Pavel Chernov circled the Team USA net and slid the puck between the legs of goalie Brady Hjelle (International Falls, Minn.) at 6:25. Nate Dewhurst (Johnston, Iowa) made it a 4-2 game when he notched a power-play goal with just 24 seconds remaining on the man advantage at 10:55. With traffic in front of the net, Alistratov dove for the puck, but Dewhurst got to it first and put the puck into the open net. After Russia notched another power-play goal at the 18:08 mark, McRae beat a Russian defender out of the corner and fired a shot with just 1:23 to play in the game. Alistratov made the initial save, but gave up a rebound to defenseman John Carlson (Colonia, N.J.), who fired the puck into the net to account for the 5-3 final.

Hjelle made 28 saves in the losing effort.

The U.S. Under-18 Select team returns to action tomorrow when it takes on Finland at 9 a.m. EDT at Zimny Stadium in Piestany, Slovakia.

Late Goals Lift Finland Past Team USA

PIESTANY, Slovakia – Despite Philip McRae’s (Chesterfield, Mo.) two-goal effort, the U.S. Under-18 Select Team fell to Finland, 5-3, here today in its second game of the 2007 Under-18 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka at Zimny Stadium.

Team USA jumped out to an early lead when McRae notched a power-play goal just 2:33 into the game. The goal came after McRae one-timed a pass from Aaron Ness (Roseau, Minn.) past Finnish goaltender Niko Sulkanen. Four minutes later, Tristan King (Elk River, Minn.) gave Team USA a 2-0 advantage when he intercepted a pass, faked a shot, circled behind the net and slid the puck into the open goal. Finland cut Team USA’s lead in half with a low slap shot that slipped past U.S. netminder Aaron Crandall (Lakeville, Minn.) at 13:18.

In the second period, using a two-man advantage, Finland tied the game at 2-2 when Teemu Eronen’s wrist shot from the blue line sailed over Crandall’s right shoulder at 5:38. Finland then took its first lead of the game at 9:44, but Team USA came back to tie it, 3-3, on a McRae slapshot with just 39 seconds left in the period during a U.S. power play.

Finland notched the go-ahead goal while up a man at 9:05 of the final stanza when Nico Manelius sent a shot from the blue line through a screen and over Crandall’s shoulder. With Crandall pulled in favor of an extra attacker at the end of the frame, Finland added an empty net goal to seal the 5-3 victory.

The U.S. Under-18 Select Team returns to action tomorrow when it takes on Slovakia at 1 p.m. EDT at Zimny Stadium in Piestany, Slovakia.

Dewhurst’s Two Goals Propel Team USA Past Tournament Co-Host

PIESTANY, Slovakia – Nate Dewhurst (Johnston, Iowa) scored twice to help the U.S. Under-18 Select Team defeat Slovakia, 5-3, here today in its third game of the 2007 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka Tournament at Zimny Stadium.

“I think we played a good, solid and consistent game tonight,” said Roger Grillo (North Kingstown, R.I.), head coach of Team USA. “I was really happy with our effort and the energy and speed of the game. We’ll look to build off of that and carry it over into Saturday’s game.”

In the second stanza, after Slovakia cut Team USA’s lead in half at 6:27, Mark Goggin (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) followed a rebound and slid the puck past an outstretched Ciliak. Dewhurst notched his second tally of the game at 16:57 to give Team USA a 4-1 advantage heading into the final period.

Slovakia’s Marek Lison one-timed a shot past Team USA goaltender Brady Hjelle (International Falls, Minn.) at 1:56 of the third frame to cut the deficit to two goals. Tyler Myers (Houston, Texas) extended the U.S. lead when his backhand pass deflected off a Slovakian defenseman and fluttered over Ciliak’s right shoulder at 4:45. NO, I was at the Game .. in Slovakia ..
USA 5:3 SLOVAKIA

Aaron Ness scored first goal.

In my opinion Slovaks couldnt keep up with the usa team, but at the end of the game they started to move puck little bit more and got couple nice opportunities which end up with two 3th period goals ..

Pretty good game tho ...

Defeats Czech Republic, 6-5, at Memorial of Ivan Hlinka

Team USA Prevails in Shoot Out, 1-0, Over Tournament Co-Host

HODONIN, Czech Republic – Goaltender Brady Hjelle (International Falls, Minn.) made three saves and Jordy Murray (Faribault, Minn.) notched the lone goal of the shoot out to help the U.S. Under-18 Select Team defeat the Czech Republic, 6-5, in the finale of the 2007 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka Tournament at Hodonin Arena. With the win, Team USA earned a fifth-place finish in the tournament.

“We were pleased with how the team really gelled together as this tournament went on,” said Roger Grillo (North Kingstown, R.I.), head coach of Team USA. “We were disappointed with how we started, but the guys really pulled together and I am excited about the way we finished.”

The Czech Republic struck first in the opening stanza, but Team USA’s Philip McRae (Chesterfield, Mo.) notched his fourth power-play goal of the tournament to tie it, 1-1. The Czechs scored twice more before defenseman David Warsofsky’s (North Marshfield, Mass.) low slap shot from the left face-off circle beat Czech goaltender Jakub Sedlacek at 12:52 to narrow the gap, 3-2. After another Czech tally, Team USA forward A.J. Jenks (Wolverine Lake, Mich.) brought his team back within one goal when he tapped home a rebound between the legs of Sedlacek, making the score 4-3.

In the second period, Mark Goggin (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) tied the game at 3:25, but Czech forward Tomas Dolezal beat Hjelle for his second goal of the game at 14:47 to give the Czech Republic a 5-4 advantage heading into the final frame.

With Team USA down a man, Craig Kitto (Ashburn, Va.) took a snap shot that sailed over Sedlacek’s right shoulder to tie the game, 5-5, at 1:14 in the third period. The score would remain tied to end regulation, sending the game to a four on four, five-minute overtime period.

After neither team was able to break the deadlock in overtime, the game had to be decided by a shoot out. Hjelle stopped all three Czech shooters he faced, including a glove save on Stepan Novotny on the Czech Republic’s second attempt. After McRae and Nate Dewhurst (Johnston, Iowa) were unable to score, it came down to Murray with the final attempt before the shoot out would go to a sudden death format. Murray streaked in on Sedlacek and fired a wrist shot under the outstretched glove hand of the Czech netminder and into the net to give Team USA the 6-5 victory.

Hjelle made 24 saves, including three in the overtime period, while earning the win.

NOTES: A.J. Jenks was named Team USA’s Player of the Game … Philip McRae led the team with six points (4-2) in the tournament … Six members of Team USA were on the 2006 U.S. Under-17 Select Team that competed in the 2006 Three Nations Tournament held in Rochester, N.Y. ... I was told that the U.S. U18 team did not do as well as expected. True??? If so, lack of chemistry??? Did not utilize players correctly??? Other teams were superior??? Am I mistaken???

For those in the know, what are your opinions?

in the end it's goaltending, Hjelle had a great last game, 960% save, but for the other two games was in in 840% range, finished about 88%, Crandell finished about 784%, they combined for about 851%. last year the team gave up 10 goals, 2.5GAA with a 928% save

How did the D play in front of them? Were the goalies not making the first saves? How was the D coverage?

Heard through the grapevine that the bench was shortened quite a bit for the U18s during the tournament. If true, I don't agree with that. Especially if you feel you are bringing over a group of top U18s.

Pick your power play and penalty kill guys. Otherwise, roll the lines.

Interesting little story behind this. The team USA doctor, who is the doctor for the Anaheim Mighty Ducks told him at the tourney that it was a clean break and that he wouldn't need surgery. After hearing this diagnosis the team trainer pulls him aside and says I'm really not certified to make any diagnosis or anything but I don't agree with what he just told you. When you get home, make sure to get a second opinion. So Nate gets home goes to the Orthopedic Sports Center in St. Cloud and they take a look at it and say ummmm, yeah, you're definitely going to need surgery. So he went under the knife yesterday. No word yet on if he'll be good to go in time for the season.

No word yet on if he'll be good to go in time for the season.

Thanks for the update, good luck Nate!
