interested in hearing how different hockey associations evaluate their goalies during tryouts. Do they grade the goalies on skills or just how they play in scrimmages or some sort of combination of the two

Who does the grading...head coaches, tryout committee members, outside evaluators?

I know that in certain schools they evaluate based on size and how they will be prepared at the next level. What level is the kid? Bantams is a little bit more on how the kid is built as in size (height and weight) and peewees is a bit less. Certain HS coaches base it on both as opposed who stops the puck best. Certain areas and schools are different but either way the kid better know how to stop the puck...

This brings me to an interesting debate I am sure we are going to have here in our association.

At the bantam level we will have 4 goalies, all will be first year, and we will have an A team and a B team. 1 of the 4 will have some success at the A level, the others are not at all ready for bantam A hockey. Do put 2 on each team? I am sure that is the way it will turn out, but is it better for the second goalie on the A team? I would like to hear your thoughts on it...

Put two goalies at Bantam A. With all first years, you'll need it. Injuries, illness, etc will play a part. Our association allows for a 70-30 split on goalie playing time at Bantam A. If your's does, then the weaker goalie could play against the weaker teams in your district, and tournaments to build his confidence. He will also improve by facing the A level skaters in practice during the year.

I agree with 32HF.... also it's never good to let #1 think he can take a game off because there's no replacement.

That is a secret rule.... and we used to say is only to be used at squirts and below for obvious reasons....it's also.... in extreme cases, a good reason for a move up..

Always wondered why there is not more non-parent mite and squirt commissioners. It might have to be a job for me in retirement years

When we were Midgets we had a vote for who had the hottest mom on the team and then we told the kid who 'won'. Talk about uncomfortable! I guess it is a compliment, but it is also a little creepy for the 15- or 16-year-old who finds out his buddies think his mom's a piece.

I agree you should have two goalies on a bantam a team..but maybe not equal playing time...
