I always applaud the performance of Nygaard or Berens, but you rarely can go wrong with a Nygaard    (no I'm not directly related but all Norwegians are by heritage)

LeSUEUR — Even with a solid performance in all aspects of the game, the Worthington girls’ hockey team dropped a close contest to St. Peter/Le Sueur/Henderson, 1-0, Tuesday night.

The Trojans (0-6-1) had just one shot on goal, but Taylor Baumhoffner made 73 saves between the pipes.

Worthington will host Sioux Falls Thursday.

Wgtn 0 0 0 — 0

S/L/H 0 0 1 — 1
Miss Baumhoffner must be the only player on the team that can put ice skates on and stand up. How is it possible to get outshot 74 to 1? And it's not as if they were playing the state champions...
"Even with a solid performance in all aspects of the game"???

Who ever wrote or quoted this has got to be comatose. You get out-shot 74 to 1 and someone thinks that was a solid performance by your "team" since the score was only 1-0. I guess since the goalie is part of the team then yes, the team had a solid performance. Un-real!!!!!!

Kennedy led after one period. EP scored 4 in the second and one in the third.
Defensedad left out one rather important stat. The shots on goal were 73-3. The Kennedy goalie was nothing short of phenomenal.
Hunter is that whole team! she is solid.
This should qualify as a great performance. No squirt level shots here!

Hastings goalie Alwin had a very good game against StillH20 Saturday. 40 saves including OT. No highlite reel saves, but very solid. She played solid postioning and when the shot was made she was in the way to stop it either with her torso or pad. She let a soft one in early, but she's the reason they stayed in the game! StillH20 must bring out the best in her. last time they met it was 1-0 and she had 35+ saves.

Madeline Lenz who plays for WBL is an outstanding goalie. She is incredible almost every game (very quick). The last one was against Cretin 5-2 win where she only gave up 2 late power play goals one a 5-3 with a JV player on the ice. In my opinion she was the better goalie by far in that game.

She also had a 40+ save game against Stillwater 2-1 loss. Most of the goals against her came early in the year when her team was averaging 7 penalties a game and of course the Hill game when 12 were called. I would bet of the goals scored against her most have been on the power play.

Great kid who was captain of the soccer team so gets a late start on the hockey season.

Melvin44: You sound like one of the proud parents trying to get your daughter some print.

I would agree with you that Madeline is a good goalie and was the better goalie in the CDH game. I do take issue with your statement that "she gave up two late goals one a 5-3 with a JV player on the ice." You make it sound like it was the JV player's fault the goal went in. Please let me clear this up. The JV player was playing left D and the shot came from just inside the blue line on the right side shortly after CDH won the faceoff. I can't possibly see how that would be the JV player's fault. It was a beautiful shot from the point and Madeline simply missed it. It happens to even the best goalies.

And by the way the JV player you so kindly mentioned is Nicole Schaub, a 9th grader, who has been practicing with the Varsity team all year and should be playing Varsity, but due to politics she isn't.

I hope the next time you want to give someone credit for being a good player you do simply that and not place blame for that person's shortcomings on other player. Shame on you.

Did I say it was ONE player’s fault? NO

Did I say it was the JV player’s fault? NO

Did I mention anyone’s name? NO. You Did!

Did I say anyone has shortcomings? NO

Am I Madeline's parent? No. I will let you know who I am at the next game and apologize.

My comments were only towards how great of a goalie Madeline is and I feel she is very underrated/underappreciated! She has over a .920 save % and I never see her mentioned and I was trying to give her the credit she deserves!!

IT IS NEVER ANY ONE PLAYERS FAULT WHEN A GOAL IS SCORED SHORTHANDED NOT TO MENTION A 5-3. HOCKEY IS TEAM GAME!

I'm sure almost every player who has been on the ice on a 5-3 has been scored on including my daughter. I was just commenting that it was late in a game and there was a player who normally doesn't play with the varsity on the ice in a very tough situation. If you took it any other way I'M SORRY!!!

I felt the coaches should put new players in situations where they can gain confidence (on a power play) not in no win situation 5-3. Nic played great the whole game on a regular shift and killed off a penalty earlier.

I also want to let you know I'm one of Nic's biggest fans and yes she should be on varsity and should have been all year long. My daughter loves playing with Nic and always says she should be playing Varsity.

This will be my last posting as parents are too passionate and read into what they want about every little thing.

Wait one more on the comment is girls hockey a sport by SHACKLEFORD6

I would like to publicly apologize to Mr. Lenz for making the statement in my last post that Melvin44 sounded like one of Madeline’s parents. Mr. Lenz is one of the nicest people I have met, and I did him a disservice in suggesting that he was trying to get his daughter some print. It was presumptuous and inconsiderate of me, and for that I am sorry. I will try harder in the future to follow the Golden Rule.

Well, not only did I owe Dave Lenz an apology, I owe Melvin44 one as well. I agree with everything you said in your last post, including that Madeline is a great goalie (WBL is lucky to have her), and the fact that a team wins as a team and loses as a team. I went back and reread your original post, looking at it through your eyes. I now see that it was less harmless than I originally thought. I hope you can see my side of it as well. This has been a very difficult year, and I was probably more sensitive than I needed to be. I’m sorry if my post is sending you away from the Forum, and I hope you will reconsider.

Don't know if she's in here anywhere for one particular game, but for excellence over the course of the season there's Katie Weise for the Minneapolis Novas. 1.24 GAA and 9 (that's right, nine) shutouts!

From the StarTribune's "Metro Athletes of the Week" January 15

CASSY LANDBORG
Blaine, hockey

Three months ago, Blaine girls' hockey coach Steve Guider was worried about his goaltending.

"I've been here since Day 1 of this program, and we've had a tremendous string of goalies," he said. "It was hard to get used to seeing the puck go in the net as much as it did."

But Landborg continued to work hard and has improved considerably. She shut out three opponents in eight days, making 14 saves in a 4-0 victory over Anoka on Jan. 5, 21 in 3-0 victory over North Metro last Tuesday and 26 in a 4-0 victory over No. 8, 2A Elk River Saturday.

Her accomplishments seem even more noteworthy considering the sophomore's varsity debut came Dec. 18, a 1-1 tie with Andover.

"Early in the year, she was a little shaky, but lately she's been spectacular," Guider said. "When you watch now, you can just see the confidence level rise, in both her and her teammates."

Hibbing's Collier

Post by northhockey »

Hibbing's Kaye Collier had a great performance against Proctor/Hermantown/Marshall last night. She stopped 47 out of 48 shots, preserving a 1-1 tie for Hibbing. She made at least 10 "monster" saves...

She had similar performances against Bemidji and Grand Rapids/Greenway. Even though her team lost both games she kept the score much closer than the game actually was.

Also from up North, Moose Lake-Willow River's Rachel Borchardt stopped 50 of 51 shots tonight and preserved a 1-1 tie against Eveleth-Gilbert.

Kaye Collier has held Hibbing in a ton of games this year. She turned away over 40 shots in a 1-0 loss to Alex in the Grand Rapids Thanksgiving Tournament. And she has only given up 2 goals in the last 2 games were Hibbing was dominated in shots.

I agree Collier has played tough this year, with one of the hardest (A) schedules in the state - she has keep alot of games close. IMO it is easy to see that Hibbing has changed it's game plan and gone to a complete defensive style of hockey (center ice trap - strict D-zone) in it's last 2 games and probably will use it in the last 4 games. It had to be a tough call for the coaches, Hibbing has always been a wide-open offensive team. I just hope that they can turn on the offense when needed to win the big game.

Good Luck to Hibbing and all Section 7A and AA Teams!!

MAGGIE ENGELMEIER
South St. Paul, hockey

The senior goalie stopped 46 of 47 shots she faced, leading the Packers to a 2-1 record. She shut out Mahtomedi 3-0 and Simley 5-0, making 14 saves in each game, and gave up only one goal in a 1-0 loss to Visitation/St. Paul Academy.

I would say Emily Klatt has had an outstanding Senior year. Her team is very young and she keeps them in every game they play. I hear she will be attending Gustavus next year and might be the final piece of the puzzle for them. Goaltending has usually been their weakness, which is tough to say becuase they have alwyas had such great skaters.

I truly mean no offense to this player or team, but is making 14 saves a game in shutting out two sub-500 teams this newsworthy? In the other game noted that SSP lost, also to a lower-ranked team, the SPA goalie had a 28 save shutout. I'm honestly not trying to criticize the SSP goalie, she has had an excellent career and bigger performances than the ones cited. Just wondering what the Strib is looking at here? :-k
