How about heart. Because lets face it, you could be better than Crosby but if you don't want to work hard then you won't be a very effective player.

Couldn't have said it better myself. You might be a phenomenal goal scorer but if you dont play gritty, block shots, forecheck, and hit, you won't make it to the next level.

Totally agree, when Rapids went to state the last couple years they did it with hard work and grit. The forwards would block a lot of shots. In a nut shell, skate hard all game.

I don't know that "heart" can be considered a "skill" as the person who posed the question asked about an actual skill. I guess I probably should have thought of that too when I put "hockey sense". Heart and hockey sense are intangible "gifts" that are obviously very important.... especially if you don't have as good of God given physical gifts.

If we are going to talk about an actual "skill", I would probably go with skating. You can still make it to higher levels if you aren't a good skater but it becomes much more difficult to succeed.

Besides a being able to get a hot girlfriend (which I still think is the most important skill a HS hockey player could have) would being a heads up player. I've known a lot of kids with more heart then actual skill...and well they had no skill. Hockey's 90% mental at that level and if you're a heads up player you can make big plays in HS Hockey.

I agree, the difference maker at this level is usually in skating abilities.

It must be scoring, since those are the stats that are so heavily relied on

You are all wrong.

It's all about your WPM. If you are a fast typer, you can quickly become one of the greatest players of all time.

Skating Skills, Hands, Heart and a lot of extra open hockey, These are the most important things. It is not just one important skill it is a combination.

I would have said skating when I was in HS but the more I've been around hockey and coaching I would definitely say "hockey sense" At the higher levels there are a number of kids who can skate like the wind and have hands but the ones who I like as a coach get the game.
