"I'm curious, why all the attacking of St Thomas and not Marshall? St Thomas has a title, yes, but everything else comparing the two, Marshall's success has been more, including head to head."
Was anyone talking about Marshall 10 or 20 years ago when they struggled to win a game in a season? No. Marshall is having a stretch like other small schools where they are good. Marshall has 300 kids in their upper school. St. Thomas has 2 or three times that much, plus double because its all guys, giving them an enrollment similar or bigger than some AA schools. This is not giving Marshall an excuse for being good or bad, as Roseau is always competitive with their puny numbers. Just saying St. Thomas is a much much bigger school than Marshall, and almost all other A schools. Thats probably a big reason why the Tommies are being picked on.

You're right, they are bigger, but not by as much as you make it seem. Marshall is a little over 300 and St Thomas is a little over 500. About 3 times as many guys. They are in the same boat as each other, once they got an area, they got good. Their difference in enrollment has little to do with it.
In addition, Marshall has 4 winter sports for guys, St Thomas has 7, not including things extra-curriculars like knowledge bowl, quiz bowl and mock trial. Not sure about Marshall on those.

Yes STA should go to the Big Schools class, but will they, probally not. Why fix whats broken, if you are dominating in class A, why not be men and move up.
I think for fun they should have it where if you win the Class A state championship, you should move to AA for atleast 4 years. Just to keep it competitive. But that will never happen, it would be cool though.

st. thomas is ridiculous for not moving up
a) they have 541 boys currently in the high school
b) they swallow up a TON of talent from programs like Rosemount, woodbury, lakeville, west st. paul and others
c) they can get about anyone to come from these programs because instead of going to a public school, they can come to st. thomas for the college prep environment
basically, they arguably have the most talent at their school in the state, and should opt up and stop being babies. the statements "they've only been good for 3 years" and "their talent will come and go" are stupid, because now that there a proven hockey school, the talent will pour in from every where

Interesting; as always those who say they should opt up are on repeat with the same comments and refuse to response to valid points made by those who don't agree with why they should opt up.
As I've said multiple times, I agree they should. Just not because they are showing they are a good A team as too many to count on one hand have done in recent years. It's not a tier system. They're a good team, that reason alone is not enough for them to opt up.

Marshall Hockey from Duluth?
HSHockeywatcher respect your thoughts, but been down this road too many times also.
For teams that may not not excel each year, but compete at a high level every year, wouldn't it make sense to compete against good competition every night, developing atheletes, instead of kicking the snot out of Silver Bay or Simley. All I have to look at is Roseau. That is my example to you. Moorhead has dominated them at times for years, but Roseau has never wavered and stayed with the big schools, so that once or twice a decade they are State Champs.
Is this a fair system for the Silver Bays and Simleys, I say no.
I guess we may agree to disagree...

Does that include doubling enrollment seeing STA has all guys? Also does anyone know if the MSHSL actually does double enrollment for STA?dangles07 wrote:in st thomas's own section, 4A, there are 3 schools with larger male enrollment (mahtomedi, simley, and spring lake park), and two schools sta is basically equal with (chisago lakes, TOTINO)
I don't understand, why would they double enrollment? Just because it's a boys only school? Show me the page that says this, it must be online.hshckfan08 wrote:Does that include doubling enrollment seeing STA has all guys? 2007-2008 St. Thomas School Profile
STUDENTS
Students and alumni describe the Academy as a
“brotherhood.” Friendships are formed here that last a lifetime.
Currently 695 young men from 12 counties in the metro area,
western Wisconsin and abroad, grades 7 through 12, are
enrolled at the school, including students from a wide range
of socio-economic and ethnic groups. Approximately 75% of
the students are Catholic; all faiths and cultures are welcome
at the Academy. Approximately 30% of the students receive
financial aid and/or scholarships. This year, the Academy will
award more than $1.5 million in financial aid.

695 young men seem like a lot of potential athletes to pick from.

1082 means that they have about 541 boys. Enrollment is double for single sex schools, assuming all public schools are 50-50 boys to girls.
St. Thomas should opt up.
All good teams in A should opt up and replace the bad teams in AA. It should be a Tier 1 and Tier 2 Tournament.
Or
One class, screw feeling good about yourself for winning a J.V. title. Clump everyone together and play them off Sweet Sixteen style in a week long tournament at the X.

Thanks for the link. Is there a page anyone knows of where they show the list of schools with adjusted enrollments?
Visitation and St Thomas are both doubled. Then many school are lowered due to things like free and reduced numbers. Washburn usually runs a freshman class of around 500, for example, and they are listed at 925. St Paul Humbolt at 611.

thats a retarded statement. theyve proved their a single A dynasty. Therefore they should stop dominating all the smaller single A teams a test how good they really are in the AA sections/state tourney
I don't think you know what you are talking about. STA is no dynasty. International Falls was a dynasty. Edina was a dynasty. STA is not a dynasty.
I went to a fight, and a hockey game broke out.

Just Duluth. Its a pretty common thing when refering to a school with both a middle school and a high school.puckman22 wrote:You're from marshall eh? only marshall people say "upper school"hshckfan08 wrote:"I'm curious, why all the attacking of St Thomas and not Marshall? Re: STA
I agree totally!wblsuperfan A wrote:Sure, let's throw 'em in section 3AA.

well considering a good portion of other A schools have over the 540 males that sta has i dont really see the advantage...will over 600 males to choose from that Gives STA quite an advantage --- I think they should make the move to AA and prove the depth they have in the big tourney . . . It will be interesting to see if they make some noise.
