On Thursday, the sixth-ranked Scarlets found out just what the Section 1 playoffs are going to be like in a few weeks.
With four goals in a 10-minute, 21-second span between the second and third periods, No. 12 Rochester Lourdes defeated West 4-3 before a jam-packed All Seasons Arena.
It was the second loss of the season for the Scarlets (16-2-0), who are hoping to secure one of the top seeds in the section tournament.
“It was a great game, start to finish,” West coach Ken Essay said. “It was section-type atmosphere, which is what you want.”
Lourdes (14-6) outshot West 35-23, but had trouble getting the puck past junior goalie Tyler Bruggeman until late in the second period.
After a scoreless first period, West grabbed a 2-0 lead on a power-play goal by Eric Christenson and a breakaway by Patrick Trembley. The Eagles put 19 shots on goal in second period, and Pete Spratte finally broke the ice with 1:45 remaining. Then, with 4.6 seconds left in the period, Taylor Funk knocked a rebound past Bruggeman during a power play to tie the game.
“We’ve got some work to do before sections,” Bruggeman said. “We got beat by two teams in the section [West also lost to Albert Lea]. We know we’re not invincible now.”
Lourdes took the lead on Alex Campbell’s shot from the left circle at 1:32 of the third period, and Spratte netted his second goal on a pass from Funk to make it 4-2 at 8:36.
Trembley made it a one-goal game again on a power-play goal from Corey Leivermann with 5:54 remaining, but that was all the Scarlets could get past goalie Nic Scudamore.
“That’s how the section’s going to be,” Essay said. “The semifinals and the quarterfinals are going to be that tight. Each game, you’re going to have eight or nine chances to score, and you need to capitalize more than they do. (Lourdes) did that tonight.”
The Scarlets would like to see a sequel.
They played without forward Andrew Bruggeman (penalty), their fourth-leading scorer, and Logan Deopere (injury), a first-line forward, leaving them with eight forwards and out of gas at the end of the second period.
“If we have (Bruggeman and Deopere), I don’t think we give up two late goals in the second. We’d take a lead into the third, then it’s a different game.”
Leivermann, a Minnesota State recruit, was also playing for the first time after missing the last four games because of a penalty.

MANKATO -- Rochester Lourdes has put itself in the driver's seat -- or, at the very least, built a convincing argument -- to earn the No. 1 seed in the Section One, Class A boys hockey playoffs.
Pete Spratte scored two goals, including the game-winner, as the 12th-ranked Eagles (14-6-0) knocked off No. 6 Mankato West, 4-3.
"I think the guys realize what they're capable of doing," Lourdes coach Aaron Gill said. "We just have to keep focusing on our next game."
West outshot Lourdes 9-6 in the first period, but neither team scored in the opening 17 minutes.
The Scarlets (16-2-0) scored the first two goals of the game, in the early stages of the second period.
Lourdes swung the momentum, though, as Spratte and Taylor Funk scored in the final 1:45 to tie the score. The Eagles outshot West 19-8 in the second.
Spratte scored at the 15:15 mark, with assists from Tyler Voigt and Cole Peterson. Then, with five second to go in the period, Funk tied the score with assists from Peterson and Spratte, on a power play.
"We just tried to run a play off a face-off and Taylor got a loose puck," Gill said. "That was a huge goal for us."
Alex Campbell gave Lourdes its first lead of the game just 1:32 into the third, with an assist from Brandyn Chezick. Spratte added the game-winning goal at 8:36 with assists from Funk and Voigt.
West pulled within one on a power-play goal at 11:06, but Lourdes held off the Scarlets the rest of the way.
Lourdes finished with a 35-23 advantage in shots on goal, and senior goalie Nic Scudamore picked up the victory with 20 saves. Lourdes plays its final regular-season game against a Section 1A opponent on Saturday, when it plays host to Faribault at 7:30 p.m.
Lourdes, Albert Lea and Red Wing are the remaining Section 1A teams with just one loss to a section opponent. Albert Lea and Red Wing each lost to Lourdes, while Lourdes only section loss came against New Prague.

DON'T COUNT EM OUT
This was a good high school game. Both teams played well, west just didn't have that tough second line like normal. Brugemann & Deoper will be back next time and believe me, these kids can play hungry if they have to. They will have to now and I think they will play better now that early in the year. They now know they can be beat. If they play with that in mind, they will still win this section. Best talent, end to end, hands down. Lourdes, very good team.
Scarlets a better team
I have to agree with Gruntcall. Lourdes played well last night but when West has Brugemann and Deopre back they are a better team then Lourdes. Lourdes wins last night, but the Scarlets will knock them off in Section play.

Won't happen. Too many head cases. Smart money is on the fisheaters.Dog_Log17 wrote:I have to agree with Gruntcall. There wont be a next year for West. The nucleus of this team is seniors. They do have some guys coming back, but most of them will be out the door. Im not counting them out because theres still sections, but West hasnt beat a good team yet this year and in the past there overconfidence screws them over in the playoffs.I'm guessin that the Scarlet skaters aren't gonna go very far in dis section after losses to the Alberts and now the Catholics. Sorry Westy good luck next year

Great game. A battle that may be fought again in a few weeks. Lourdes played very well, and was not fazed by a 2 goal deficit mid-way through the second period. They fought hard, and it ultimately paid off. They have some fine players, and are well coached. West can, at least in part, lay part of the blame on Mother Nature. Had the Austin game not been postponed Tuesday, A. Bruggeman would have been in the lineup vs Lourdes (had to serve 1 game suspension), and Leiverman would have had one game under his belt post suspension (interesting how their lack of discipline REALLY cost them in a game that meant something!). West needed its best players to bring their A game...and they did not. With a full Mankato West line-up, Lourdes will have to play their best game should they meet in section playoffs. Lourdes has now beat them twice, including the summer tourney, and lets face it, beating a team of similar skill three times in a row is very hard! Barring a meltdown, Lourdes has my vote for top seed. The AL vs West game next Thursday is now huge, but not for the reasons stated last week (top seed). Neither will likely get top seed, and West must win big to even be considered for second seed. Should they lose, they could end up 5th! Regardless, what a great section!
