OK, now you're talking. I've searched around a bit and have been unable to find a good source. Could you recommend one? I'd like to see something that gives each of the teams' meetings over the past 10 years, including scores.

WILLMAR/ LDC was huge but seems like the administration in Willmar had a hard time with it so they took LDC of the schedule , only 30 miles apart been playing since both of them got hockey programs in the early 70,s ,
has any other administrations cancelled the hugest rivalsin thier program,
What has Willmars AD done to the kidsand what doe sit show them in life i, if it gets to big of problem, just eliminate it, and these people are are teaching our youth.
well it seem like Willmar must have enough money in the system to travel farther place to play game sinstead of 30 Miles.
BRING BACK THE CREAM CAN{ for those that dont know that is what they use to play for , But thats right the administrations took that away too}

Best rivalries or past best rivalries

Post by iwatchalotofhockey »

I would have to say that the Warroad versus Roseau was the best in its day but not any longer. When I played we were a sub par Roseau team but still had that hatred for our neighbors to the East and always got up for this game. But now its just another game IMO.

If you have the time you can go back and listen to an archive of a former coach of mine Gary Hokanson who concurs with my sentiment. He was interviewed during our state tournament broadcast we did in March between Roseau and Blaine where he talked about it losing its luster since the two separate to different classes now. I think now its being replaced with Moorhead vs Roseau as far as hatred because they play each other to go to state and that has more of a captivating factor.

As far as current rivalries I would have to throw these out there:

WBL vs Hill Murray
Cretin vs STA
Blaine vs Centennial (becoming more and more appealing)
or any HS who plays Shattuck (because of the MSHSL vs Shattuck mentality)

Just my two cents and I am sure there are many others out there such as East vs Cloquet and EP vs Edina but these are the ones that stick out for me.

going back to 1998 the record is 11-10-1 in favor of Warroad. Was that the imbalance you were referring to? Scoring in those games was Warroad 72 Roseau 61.

Helps a bit...I'd still like to see each individual game laid out, though.

go to roseauramshockey.com, scroll towards the bottom and on the right hand side there is a RHS vs WHS pic, click on that it'll give you all the info you want.

Also you can notice their that the two teams have actually played each other in the state tournament. Warroad one that one as well.

OK, thank you.

It's certainly closer than I have been making it sound. It's not as close as East-Cloquet, but I'm not sure anything has been as close as East-Cloquet has been over the past five years or so.

There are some odd ones sticking out in there too (15-1 Warroad in 2004???).

I'd say this ultimately weakens, though does not completely refute, my initial argument.

Yeah, he should have just resorted to calling someone an idiot when he didn't agree with them. Works for some, eh?

I wonder if people who make posts like that one realize how ridiculously childish they sound. Makes me feel kinda sorry for them.

I don't think this is the biggest rivalry, but its definitely been a rivalry for quite some time ---> NORTH ST. PAUL vs TARTAN

They used to have to share a school and rink before Tartan's school and rink was finished. And the two schools/rinks aren't more than 5 minutes apart!! 8)

chiefofmedicine wrote:not sure but im pretty sure the longest rivalry is between Saint Bernard's (St. Paul Saints) and Washington (St. Paul Como) when they play for the Rice St. Cup. its like at like 45 years i beleive. and now they are in the same conference.
I'm glad someone mentioned this. Just because neither team has been any good since the late 90s, (Saints #9 in class A in 98 with 15 straight wins, including wins over Breck, Blake, St. Thomas, and Mahtomedi) doesn't mean this isn't one of the oldest and greatest rivalries there is.

Alot of what makes this rivalry great stems from the fact that almost all of the players, parents, coaches, and fans are close friends. Most of the kids grew up playing hockey, baseball, etc with each other thier whole lives in the Como Area organization. For the players, it's the match up they look forward to every year because they usually aren't good enoguh to compete for a shot at state, and haven't been for 10 years. There's also hardware involved. As far as I know, there's no trophies given out for the WBL - HM or Warroad - Roseau games. It's probably the only time during the season either one of these teams is capable of jam packing Aldrich. Maybe once out of every 10 or 15 years the Saints have a chance to compete for a section title, but those are going to become fewer and more far between since they are now AA.

My point here is that this game is the pinnacle of the season for BOTH teams. The same can't be said about the HM - WBL, DE - CEC, or Roseau - Warroad matchups, because those schools are almost always competing for a state title, so the regular season games don't mean as much to everyone involved as they do when the Saints play the Cougars.

If CEC beats DE, but then DE goes and wins state, then who cares who won the match up? This scenario applies to every single other rivalry people are talking about here. But it is unrealistic to apply it to the Saints or the Cougars. The pinnacle of the season for the other teams mentioned is usually something other than this one game. It's the state tournament. The pinnacle of the season for the Cougars and Saints IS this one matchup.

For anyone who's ever been there, it's not just a hockey game. It's an event with recognition awards being presented, commemorations, etc.

This rivalry has more tradition and is more important than any St. Thomas vs Cretin game. Placing that rivalry above this one is ridiculous.
I could be wrong, but didn't St Thomas and Cretin both win the state tournament in 2006? Does anyone know or care who won when the schools played each other during the year? Does that game matter? What was the pinnacle of the season for those teams? Clearly this one doesn't hold anywhere near the importance of the Rice Street Cup when considering the people involved. Similar comparisons can be made for the other mentioned rivalries (aside from the ones where the teams play in the same section, but even then, the pinnacle of the season isn't the match up for BOTH teams). Further, this matchup started in the 40s. It has way more history and tradition associated with it than any in the metro.

A very strong case can be made for this game to be mentioned in the top 5 rivalries in the state, if not even the #1 rivalry.

I speak from experience, because I played for the saints in 98 when we were heavily favored in our section. Because of that, we could have cared less about the outcome of this game. The last time the situation was similar was in 1989. And never before that. This shows that in the 65 year history of the matchup, only TWICE has it not been the most important game of the season for the involved schools. This trend will continue to hold true more than ever. Both schools are in a section with Hill Murray, WBL, Roseville, and Tartan. They will never be able to compete with those schools, so the matchup will continue to be the most important game indefinitely. At the start of the season, the Saints and Cougars already are well aware that they have no shot at state (Unless there's some strange occurance that's only happened twice in 65 years). They play their seasons for one game and one game only.

Show me a different rivalry that can say the same thing.
