Nikki Ludwigson, Dy-anna Stewart and Carissa Ketcher should be added to Eden Prairie, which had at least 11 D1 players on the 2006-2007 roster. Probably more in earlier years.

Ok thanks will include.

I can only find Dy-anna Stewart listed at D3 St. Mary's?

Bloomington Jefferson had a run of players 1998-2002. Not sure how many players but I thought they were a deep program in those years.

Did Jenny Schmigdall ever play girls hockey in HS? If she didn't I don't know how she can count on Edina's list. Then we would need to all the Thoroughbred's that never played HS hockey also.

Just my two cents

Run players through uscho and you can confirm stats. Stewart played for Robert Morris before St. Mary's.

Knight 7, good catch on Potter. I agree that girls who never played for their HS teams shouldn't be included here. I missed that when the 97-98 Gopher roster didn't list the Thoroughbreds as her previous team in contrast to the case of a few of her teammates. Her previous team was of course listed as Team USA. In her place we can add 3 others from Edina HS.

In evaluating successful high school hockey programs I suggest you also consider the quality of the college institution where the kids attend-- by that measure Blake stacks up quite well with at least 10 D-1 players at one of the Ivies--there may be more--by my count they include the following:

Kathryn Moos-Brown
Kelsey Johnson -Yale
Amy Cobb-Dartmouth
Berit Johnson-Yale

Great post.

There is likely a whole additional discussion off this thread list - who went D1, who played at D1 (about 25-40% of any class do not play 4 years), who had impact at D1, who played on winning Teams or Championship College Teams, who played WCHA or ECAC or Hockey East or CCHA...who got a degree, in what and where are they today....Hockey is a sport that develops some life time skills in discipline, focus, goal setting, being able to lead, follow and be a good teammate that can be utilized in the professional world to win at the game of life, raise a great family and give back to build stronger communities.

Like your post it is personal to the player and family. Blake is a school that has a goal of great education and giving students the chance to go to the world's best schools.

The Forum has many threads about kids moving schools I started this post to see if there really are hockey powers that end up placing more kids at D1. Not sure what the data says yet but does show show nesting or ability to develop the opportunity to play D1.

MN places the most players to D1 from any state in the US, but do they have impact over other players is a whole different question that would make an interesting thread.

I disagree that this is a metric of successful H.S. programs--unless one's goal is to get in to an Ivy. Kids (and parents) pursue Ivies probably for the same reason they pursue Brake or Breck -- because of the real or perceived elite level of education they will get there, and the advantages that the elite schools confer. Others believe in the value of public schools and state universities.

Here in Minnesota, the U of M is the elite hockey player's school of choice more often than not. Many that are truly good enough to go anywhere (and that's a select few players each year) choose U of M. A few choose Ivy, but I'm guessing they're the minority.

Of the 2nd & 3rd tier D1 recruits -- some go Ivy if they have the grades. But there are also plenty of straight-A students with good ACT scores who choose state schools, or other private schools (Providence, Colgate, Syracuse, BC, Quinnipiac, Northeastern, RPI, etc.) that may fit a student better than an Ivy.

At a little under a quarter million for an undergraduate degree with no academic or athletic scholarships available, why is this list any better than the others?

Female D1 players

Post by hockeymaven »

In response to Bandy and Bulldogs comments to my earlier post the point I intended to make is that there is more to the issue than the number of female D1 players that played at a particular school. How do you take advantage of your opportunities due to your hockey talent.

Do you go to college to play hockey or do you play hockey at the college you decide to attend?

Do you pick the most successful hockey program that wants you (Bandy's reference to the U of M by way of example) or the school that you think will give you the best education while you play hockey? They may not be the same school.

There are choices to be made and yes as Bulldog points out there are significant costs associated with an Ivy League education although they do have generous financial aid programs. (Not being on scholarship can insulate you from coaches telling you what courses to take or not to take among other things which I know happens)

But I for one think one of the most important investments you can make for your children is in their education. Our advice to our hockey playing daughters was to select the school that provides them the best life opportunities versus the best hockey program.

I understand that others may have different priorities.

And the only thing I said in reference to other schools is that Blake stacks up well when looking at the number of D1 players and the schools they attended--there are several others D1 players from Blake that selected non- ivies with Dani C. being the most recent example.

I agree with going to college for education, but it is snobbish to assume you'll get a better education at an ivy league school. If I want to be an engineer I'm better off going to Madison than Harvard. Not only will I get a better education, but I won't be drowning in student loan debt. For computer science I'm better off going to Berkely, Stanford or Carnegie Mellon. Harvard fares better in Medicine, but depending on your specialty you may be much better off going to Chapel Hill or the University of Minnesota.

Ivy league schools are fine institutions where you can get a great education, but they are not the only, and often not the best places to start your future.
