Re: 2022-23 Early Departures
Thats correct Slap Shot. I can count another 25 or so that would be higher end MSHL that would be juniors or seniors this year but left as 1-2 years ago for tier 1 and juniors. Keep in mind Suggerud would be a senior this year if he chose to stay in MSHL and not accelerate his schooling when at ntdp. Players like Whitelaw are not being factored in the list above. Imagine Whitelaw and Stramel playing for Rosemount today...wow.Slap Shot wrote: ↑Tue Nov 22, 2022 7:47 amThank you, although these are players that just left during the most recent off-season correct? At a minimum the number of higher end players leaving for NTDP, Juniors, Tier 1 are going to stay the same, but I think more will keep leaving.
What year would people say that many higher end kids started to leave mshl?
Re: 2022-23 Early Departures
After perusing the past “Early Departures” pages, a couple things stood out to me that refute the idea that winning at the HS level is no longer important to today’s players and that more and more top talent are and will continue to choose other routes.
• The list doesn’t seem to be getting significantly longer over time, despite yearly proclamations of “This is the beginning of the end of MN HS hockey, you’ll see even more top talent leaving from here on out.”
• The pro/con arguments from 15 years ago seem to be largely the same today.
• It seems fewer are choosing the major junior route.
• While the old lists certainly have names of current NHL players or players who were good-to-excellent D1 players, there are as many, if not more, names of players I have never heard of making an impact even at the D1 level, much less pro. Just seems to show that leaving HS early is not the rocket ship to hockey greatness some make it out to be.
• Looking at this year’s list, I see 24 confirmed departures. Of which,
A. 25% are going to the NTDP, which will always draw some players.
B. 40% are leaving programs where either there appears to be a coach kerfuffle (Moorhead, Chaska), or have just won a title (Hermantown).
C. 20% are leaving from teams that are in a preseason top ten. (LVS, Edina, Wayzata, Cretin, EGF). And the EGF player already moved once, so “staying to play with your buddies” doesn’t appear to be in the DNA anyway.
D. The remaining 15% are from teams that seem to have little chance at making a run at state. (Stillwater, Fergus, Sartell, HA)
• A,B, and D are common reasons for leaving that I don’t see changing, and transferring is likely to keep D from ever growing too large. Option C is the only one that would be a reason for alarm that MN HS hockey has lost its allure. Until that numbers goes up significantly and annually, I see no reason to believe the sky is falling.
While I can't deny that leaving early can work out well for some kids, most statements I see supporting kids leaving early just sound like someone rationalizing the decision they already made for their own kid, or, sadly, as a sales pitch for a junior program.

Re: 2022-23 Early Departures
This is an all-world post with several great insights. I'll add that even though some kids leave: A) a great deal have played HS hockey before leaving, and B) it doesn't matter...HS hockey in Minnesota is still great.rainier2 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 22, 2022 12:28 pm • A,B, and D are common reasons for leaving that I don’t see changing, and transferring is likely to keep D from ever growing too large. March Madness no longer has guys like Laettner, Hurley & Hill staying 4 years, but it is still a ton of fun to watch. Same here. Looking forward to another great season!
Be kind. Rewind.

Re: 2022-23 Early Departures
Good stuff
As long as we all admit....These are not "kids" decisions...These are "dad" decisions
Dad's in a hurry..Said kid just wants to keep dad happy
Until I see a kid in a lobby of a rink, tugging on dads Canada Goose jacket begging him to leave, this is my perception.
More stats.
5-10 years from now, 90% of these kids will look back at this and wish Dad didn't do this
Of all these kids leaving early...4-5 may have good D-1 careers
Those who go on to play D-1, 40-50% will end up using the open portal because "dad couldn't fix things this time"
1-2 kids from this group may, if the stars align properly, play 50 games in the NHL
I'm thinking MSHL should offer up a suite to all families who's kids leave early to the 2023 state tournament....The husband and wife must sit together in the suite and watch all AA games....And here's the fun part. All these parents will be MIC up so we can listen to mom constantly lecture her husband on what a dumb @ss he is for making little Billy leave early.

FYI: Maple Grove has posted their roster. Gunderson is on it. He’s hurt and will be out a while, but will be back in Crimson eventually. Guessing MG’a top line will eventually be Gunderson, Brink and Steenerson. Deadly.

Re: 2022-23 Early Departures
That's why we play the game...a lot of kids on the 14, 15 and 16 teams developed more than they ever would have playing JV or 3-4th line Varsity. It's all about choice and I'm certain the majority of the kids feel they made the right choice when it comes to development. Natty's or not.
Re: 2022-23 Early Departures
Is there a comprehensive list of players that played juniors this past season and the most likely public or private school they likely would have played for had they remained in h.s.?
