Right as rain SS. <br><br>The liberal racist looks at hockey(and other programs)and makes a judgment about it based on the color of the skin of the participants. <br><br>The liberal racist thinks that there is somethig wrong with hockey(and lately, baseball) because there arent enough blacks participating. That's racism, pure and simple.<br><br>He then invariably will want to spend millions trying to solve the "problem" by inventing programs.<br><br>He doesnt care that no one is turning people away because of race. He doesnt even care if the race that he thinks should be participating doesnt want to participate and would rather be doing something else.<br><br>He just has his mind made up that there is a problem if the makeup of the participants in a program isnt "diverse enough" .....whatever the hell that means. <br><br>The liberal racist strives for diversity and loves to use the term "diverse".....which means unlike and distinct. Your ignorance is excused but noted.<br><br>There actually is a book that bears the title "Liberal Racism" written by a guy named Jim Sleeper. Its controversial but intersting.<br><br>Its theme is basically that liberals are so fascinated with racial differences that they are prevented form treating any nonwhite like themselves and as a result enact programs that reniforce 19th century assumptions about race that are patenetly racist. <br><br>A lot of the old affirmative action stuff was criticised for the same reason.<br><br>So you are wrong....a racist is not a racist. Racism can take many forms. Some think liberal racism ( a/k/a racialist ideology) is as destructive as any racism we have fought and hardly distinguishable from it. <br><br>Sleeper believes that we need to foster notions of citizenship <br>and civic culture that trancends race instead of being preoccupied with it.<br><br>The titile of the thread and the first post are examples of his concern. Personally, I like the spin and humor. This thread gave me a great laugh for the day.<br><br>My opinion? I think it is a cost thing. It's not just the availability of an arena. It's skates, pads, helmets, breezers, etc. etc. etc. You have to have a lot of extra income to support a hockey player in the house. When my kids were little it cost us $50 per kid per month for ice time. It nearly broke us back then. Now, that would probably be a drop in the bucket to what they pay. In basketball what do you need besides the ball? <br><br>Minorities tend to have lower income (generally) so it would figure that they would choose basketball over hockey if given the choice.<br> <p></p><i></i>

There are a lot of white, lower income families who choose hockey and get financial aid, sell wreaths, get used or donated equipment,sacrifice and do whatever it takes to have the child play. <br><br>We have a lot of affluent minority families in our association that dont play hockey. <br><br>If we were to survey the minority families with income over $40,000+ (or pick a number at which hockey is affordable) I doubt we would find a % of hockey players that would match their white counterparts. <br><br>It cant be cost. <br><br>So, what is it? Is it a stereotype or is it a fact?? <br><br>There are always going to be exceptions to the rule but for the most part minority kids do not choose hockey. Maybe the paper-writer should go and interview a bunch of kids and find out why they chose the sport that they chose. He/She can report back to us. <p></p><i></i>

Packerboy, I flat out disagree with you. The cost is most definately a factor. I knew a lot of basketball players in high school who said they would have played hockey if it was cheaper. Not every family is willing to make sacrifices so their child can play hockey. <p></p><i></i>

Of course cost is a factor in the decision to play hockey or to do anything else( in my case, which Scotch to drink in about one hour). <br><br>But it doesnt explain why minorities dont play. <br><br>The pool of minority players who can afford to play is way too under represented on our rosters for cost to be the driving factor. <br><br>Besides, basketball players are cheap anyway. <br><br> <p></p><i></i>
