Re: hockey$
We have already discussed this on here. Minorities in general have lesser incomes than white people. They have more people on welfare, more that live in large cities (that have poor education), and are just relatively dissadvantaged in general. This is one reason why there are less of them playing hockey.

And you believe the salaries of those professional athletes represent the majority of the minorities? And by the way, what does their salary have to do with their education? I'm sure we have all heard some of these people interviewed before. Many of them are barely literate (or some maybe not even).

At this point, I want to ask the original poster:

1. Did you get the (or any) answer you were looking for?

2. How quickly did you think it'd turn into a discussion of racism, keeping in mind that you weren't the person who first used the word (racism is different from racial diversity, but it was a guarantee that someone would take the thread there)

3. Are your more or less inclined as of now to think that you'll get a true unbiased opinion in this Forum?

For what it's worth, if the question is why there aren't more blacks playing hockey, I second the notion that the econ factor has something to do with it.

But, there is more, and it has to do with role models. Heroes if you want to call them. Do African American children look at white hockey players and see something they want to aspire to be like one day? Conversely, do Caucasian children look at black basketball players and see something they want to aspire to?

Maybe there is some of the answer in there. It sure as heck has nothing to do with politics. Too easy an explanation. Too easy to try to play the L card or C card.

btw Joe, if I'd picked anybody to bring up liberals in a negative fashion in this thread, you would've been the one.

Then again, I expect nothing less from conservatives.

I think we should keep this topic open for just a bit longer. Cool, Mitch?

Lee
____________
Message Board arsonist since 2005

Re: race in hockey
In 1993 while working on a degree in statistics I looked at that very question. We looked at Rochester, Roseville, and St. Cloud I think and tried to get a sampling from their youth programs (peewee and bantam) without using race; just income level and family type. Then we compared those on a race basis. Basically hockey players have a higher than average income, actually significantly higher than average and hockey players are quite a bit more likely to come from 2 parent homes (which also helps the income). Using income and family dynamic we then compared hockey families to black families, in Minnesota very very few black families fall into the criteria most hockey players fall into. It's 12 years later now and Minnesota's demographics have probably changed, but I'd wager not enough to find a statistical difference in these categories. Essentially the number of lower income and or single parent white kids playing hockey was the same as for black kids in these towns.

The other really sad thing we learned was that in an affluent town like Rochester, in its whole high school hockey history, only 1 African American has earned a high school letter in hockey, and that was in 1986. Nearly 20 years ago. There is a kid who played for Century's JV last year and couple kids in the youth program who hopefully will change that though.

Sources are tough to come by, 12 years ago we found nothing, but now with google I thought for sure smebody had published something on diversity in hockey. After fussing around about all I could come up with are some NHL facts and figures and a bunch of stories on Willie O'Ree. Good luck to you staysquaretothepuck, opinions are many but it seems hard research will be tough to find.

Single Parents
That makes a lot of sense that there aren't many youth hockey players with single parents. Not only is it a lot of money, but it is always a huge time commitment and the kid has to get to the arena some how. The single parents might not have the time to bring them.
