Re: Best and Worst Ref's
For clairification

We do have evaluators in our district. They try to see each referee at least once per year if not more. The referees do not know they are being evaluated.

We welcome all parents to "lace em up" and join us as referees

I personally resent the fact that there are parent out there that think referees take bribes to help in the outcome of a game.

Until which time you decide to become a referee and can do it better than us and not be human, it would be my suggestion to watch the game, cheer on your child and team and quit worrying so much about the referees.

For me personally, I do not referee for the money. I referee because I love the game of hockey and I personally believe that most referees do it for the game.

hockeyref1

If you love the game so much do it for free; like many coaches do. Volunteer your time! Help keep the costs down.

Being a ref is a great, tax free (D2 - if the still do this) part time job. Why not put up with whining parents, crabby coaches, disrespectful kids, and make $3,000 - $5,000.

best and worst refs
I did volunteer my time for 7 years as a coach.

I also volunteer my time as a referee for the womens cancer tournament every year.

refereeing is not free. I pay taxes on the money i make from my part time job. I recieve a 1099 and include all monies in my taxes. I also use my refereeing money to buy my kids hockey equipment so they can play the game.

My point: It is a job I enjoy and get paid to do. I think that would be what everyone would want to do

Re: Best and Worst Ref's
It's not hard to believe that you had problems in the Bloomington Tournament. D6 has by far the worst ref'ing anywhere in the State.

I do think it is absurd to think that any ref receives bribes though. That is ridiculous.

There are some good ref's out there and usually they are the ones that don't somehow someway try to make the game about them.

The further north you get the better it get though in my opinion. The ref's in Duluth will let you play more than the metro, the guys on the range more than duluth and and the guys in roseau and warroad more than the range. It really is better hockey.

But look at D6 in general, they have more rules than anyone else, they are more over-protective than anyone else (neck guards, come on) and their ref'ing is the worst for the same reason.

But I don't think you will ever change their minds.

hockeyequalslife,
are those good or bad refs in your mind?

Re: Best and Worst Ref's
There is no doubt the refs in the Southern half of the state are overprotective. I tend to like the refs from the north Aka I Falls Grand Rapids no wthat is what hockey is about. The refing in the south have almost a ringette mentality.

Re: Best and Worst Ref's
It's amazing to me all the different opinions regarding officials in this and other threads, yet no one said a word about fans and or players?

As you sit there and watch your child play, believe it or not there is a game being played with two complete teams out there. You may see things around your player, or if you are a player things that have happened to you that you don't view as good.

The officials and coaches have a job to do. Yes, there is payment for the officiating. Next time you head to your local rink for a game, or some out of town tournament, imagine how your games would go with no officials? Maybe get a couple of parents from each team to make the calls? That sounds like a good volunteer effort.

Take a look at some of the abuse these officials put up with, then you may understand why 50% of all new officials quit after the first year. The money isn't worth it.

I've been on both sides of the bench for a lot of years, and the only thing that stays consistent in hockey is all the bitching about what other people do.... Try taking a look in the mirror, and doing something that will impact the game in a positvie way instead of standing back pointing fingers.

I agree as well, very good point Bigcurve. Hopefully more people realize that from now on (including myself)

Re: Best and Worst Ref's
While well said Bigcurve961, it doesn't excuse those refs that give other hard working refs a bad name. Gotta agree about there being an issue in District 6 refs having a problem. I heard MG A "walked off" the ice of their game with Chaska recently because the refs were totally losing control. Having heard about teams leaving the ice during tournaments this years would indicate an issue.

RE: Parents and fans (the bad ones), NO QUESTION, they can be one of the worst parts of the game. Hopefully, Fair Play points have helped a little. I know a number of teams have been impacted by losing their points. While this time of year when District seatings are being determined many people think Fair Play points are dumb, so is embarassing your kid and association.

It's not the money
You see bigcurve, its not the money that is the problem, it is the ego's. I don't disagree with you on crazy parnets, but the volunteer coaches have to put up with them as well. The problem, and I've seen it in D6 more than any other district, is these guys have such ego's that they don't feel they need to explain anything. Well guess what everyone from the coaches to the officials is part of the teaching process for these kids. It is always, "shut your mouth, and get in the box" Frankly, their arrogance is what disturbs me.

Like calling mouthgaurd penalty mid-play in a tie game in the third period, without any prior warning to either team. That is not helping the game, that is showing everyone you know the rule book. Should the player have had the mouthgaurd in his mouth, absolutely. Should that D6 ref have called a penalty at that point. No freaking way.

But hey, everyone else is wrong when talking about the D6 refs right.

THEY ARE BRUTAL!

By the way, I am an official, so apparently that gives me the right to express my opinion!

Re: It's not the money
No argument that there are poor officials out there. The point is, if everyone sees something is wrong, why isn't anyone taking action at a level that makes a difference?

I don't know what the officiating is like in District 6. If I was there, I would be getting my facts in line with "all the other disgruntled people" and taking it to the district. If you have teams leaving the ice due to poor officiating on a regular basis, that would be a good starting point for documentation.

No one will be able to fix every little thing. If there is an overall problem in an association and all people do is complain on a hockey message board, they don't really want the problem fixed.

Re: It's not the money
Most refs after doing it for a few years just get godlike and the district reps feel they have to support them otherwise the refs will take it out on your association.

Re: It's not the money
Sounds like with your knowlege, you are just the person to dig in and fix it?

Political BS is all over the world, with district hockey being part of it. If it's that bad, do something about it...

Re: It's not the money
A person has to have help and with all of the cave dwellers out there you can only get hung out to dry so many times. So don't tell me to fix it. I have tried.

Re: Best and Worst Ref's
I heard that the ref that made the kicking call didn't even show up at the meeting. Now is that saying that he doesn't stand by his call?

Re: Best and Worst Ref's
HMH21, I don't know the details of the kicking call you reference but can help you out with process after something like that happens.

The official sends a game report to the district referee-in chief, and notifies the team coach of what has happened. This report stands for what that official feels happened at the game. The meeting is for district people and the player, no one else.

IcyP, if you can't get the support this problem must not be as widespread as you feel it is? I understand your frustration on being "hung out to dry", but if the kids are suffering through a terrible situation isn't it worth a little struggle to fix something "everyone" feels is broken? Gather up the troops, bring facts and try it one more time.

Spoken like a true Ref
Bigcurve is obviously a referee, and does know what he is talking about in this regard, however, I can't believe that he thinks there can be actual changes to how the ref's conduct themselves.

Here's what happens...Coach, parent, assosciation lodges a complaint. The ref's assoc. says "well if you don't like it find some other group to do your games" Of course because all the ref's that are USA cert. are in that group, the ref's have the hockey association by the short and curly's.

One ref is always gonna back up another and therefore you can get nothing accomplished.

D6 ref's suck!

Re: Spoken like a true Ref
Duluthhockeyfan is abolutely correct they always say any time you have any kind of problem with a ref or refs the answer is always the same. (If you don't like it find another ref asssociation that would do better) All in all alot of refs have forgotten after years of refing that this is for the kids and not the coaches ,parents or league personnel. The best one I always here is in the NHL that would have been a penalty. The problem is these are kids and I can count on one hand those that will make it to the NHL and I am missing one finger.
