Re: Spoken like a true Ref

Post by bigcurve961 »

I've been on both sides of the boards, and behind the bench.

I've seen changes take place, and also what you speak of here. What I'm saying is, if things are as bad as everyone says they are and you get a united front with facts, it will be very difficult to sweep it "under the rug". Get a list of the worst offenders, with situations from game sheets that show the facts, and see what happens.

There are people out there that care, and want to make the game great for the kids. They can't do this if everyone has the attitude you explain here, "Here's what happens...Coach, parent, assosciation lodges a complaint. The ref's assoc. says "well if you don't like it find some other group to do your games" Of course because all the ref's that are USA cert. are in that group, the ref's have the hockey association by the short and curly's."

As you should be able to see, I'm not sticking up for anyone. There are bad officials out there. There are also bad coaches, players, fans and parents as well. The difference is, what?? Most of the bitching we hear about is game calling.

Parents have these players everyday, all year long. Coaches have the kids 3 to 5 times per week for an hour or so. Officials have the kids for an up to 90 minutes. Who has the most control over what happens?

If it's just a bunch of message board BS, then type on....

First, strongly agree several D6 refs have major issues which MUST get addressed.

Second, our teams are never so consistently 'homered' as by Duluth refs, unless of course it's in Rochester. Homer refs reflect embarassingly on the host and are a disservice to the hard working kids on the ice, on both sides of the puck.

best and worst refs

I sit back and read these messages, and i wonder to myself

Have any of you seen a well called game. I see alot of people bitching about games because of this call and that call or no call etc. Of the 1700 games played in the district, it appears that not one of you have seen any good games.

Like many things in this world, it is easy to find the bad and report on it. Hence the TV news etc.

I sure would like to come back to the website and see some positive feedback on games done well by referees

best and worst refs

Post by Ice Dad »

H R-

I for one have seen primarily well refed games. Absolute more times than not you don't even notice them as they're just doing their jobs. I also have seen more games than I can count where I saw an exceptional job done. Whether it was handling a situation, player, coach, or parent, you just went "WOW, well done!" Unfortunately, this is what makes the bad ones stand out.

Perfect case in point is the Roseau tournament. Explain to me how in all the years of their tournament, all the great Twin City, State Bantam championship teams, NOT ONE Twin Dities team has EVER won it. Coincidence?

I played in D6 for 6 years, and i can honestly say that i have never been in a well ref'd game. In D8 the refs are just as bad. The best refing i have seen this year are a couple of VFW games ive played in this year.

Honestly, in reality there is never going to be a good ref'd game by both teams point of view. One side can say that the refing was awsome, but on the flip side, the other team can say the refing sucked ( most times because they have lost ) i have never talked to someone who lost a game and said the refing was good, there is always something that the ref should/shouldnt have called. But hey, life's a bitch sometimes. Deal with it

i think all the minneapolis refs are pretty good. The district 11 refs are the worst. They are so inconsistent. One game you can check a kid from behind and you wont get called and the next game, you can't touch a kid.

Are you kidding?, District 6 refs are not good. ( I am taking this as you were talking about the whole Twin Cities, not just Minneapolis in general.) Also, District 11 refs were great when I played there.
- Be Nocturnal -

Worst Referees

Post by hockey school »

When my team lost to Armstrong 3-2 we had a total of 14 penalties in the whole game, and we were short-handed the whole first period. The referees were HORRIBLE!

It sounds like your team should have adjusted their play to the way the game was being called?

I really only think that there is one particular ref in D3 that should not be allowed back. Otherwise the refs in D3 are mediocre. On any given night, they can be fair or abysmal. I don't think that it's an easy job though. Everyone pretty much expects the refs to be terrible and jumps all over them when they miss a call or make a controversial call. At this point, I think most refs are extremely defensive as soon as they step on the ice because they've been yelled at so many times by coaches, players and parents. All that said, I think there needs to be a better system of evaluating refs and disciplining refs for poor performance.

I am going to go back to what I said a week ago. Since you all think that the refs are so bad why are you not out there doing a better job? Or are you just that chicken... and you have to hide behind screennames and say refs suck.

Who is going to pay evaluators to go out and watch refs every night. We have to have 40 game seasons for every team. On any night in D6 there are up to 40 games. Do you think that there are that many good officials out there? Are you going to punish them so they quit? 75% of all 1st year officials don't come back for a second year.

You are talking about PeeWee and Bantam hockey. It's not the NHL. You are not paying guys enough to put up with the coaches and the parents. Yes so refs have developed attitude problems but who can blame them. Look at what you have said about them. Everyone wants perfection but can understand why it does not happen.

When a kid makes a mistake no one is standing up and yelling at the kid for 20 minutes about it. May if a kid makes a mistake and cause a goal to get scored on his team the ref should get to yell at him and tell him how much he sucks! Then come on the hockey boards and say that he is not one of the top 5 players in the state cause he made a mistake.

Think about it! I think it would be great! Hockeyref1 I think that you should start doing that!

Hockeyhelp, thank you for proving my entire point that refs are too defensive.

I'm not saying that we need evaluators at each game, but I've never seen one at all. Why not have the other refs on the ice evaluate each other? I realize this has some inherent issues surrounding favortism, but it would at least be a start.

I used to be a ref and I used to be a coach. I can tell you that when I made mistakes (and I did make mistakes, everyone does) that I did my best to correct those mistakes in the future and wasn't all that surprised when I got an earful from a coach.

As a coach, I never yelled at a ref for 20 minutes and anyone that does should be ejected 1 minute into their rant. I gave the players a hard time when they made mistakes just like I gave the refs a hard time when they made mistakes. Plus, while you say that the pay isn't enough, the fact is that you are getting paid. The kids are not. I'm not sure that your analogy makes sense based on that fact.

Bottom line is that I don't think the refs are horrible. I also don't think they are great though. There's room for improvement on the part of refs and on the part of coach's interactions with refs.
