Re: Re:careful
First off I am not a ref. I coach. Second do you know how to spot an evaluator at a game? I am gussing that you don't. But let me tell you how it works:

The evaluator either meets with the refs before the game or just sits in the stands. He is by himself with 2 or 3 sheets of paper writing notes (he may even look like a scout watching the players). So you probably never notice them.

Then after the game the stop in the refs lockeroom for about 10 minutes to go over what the evaluator saw.

But you are not going to be able to have 200 evaluators to be at every game and the refs could never evaluate each other. They should be concetrating on there own job!

What does HockeyRef1's status have do do anything?

(But I will be a ref next year cause atleast when you leave the rink as a ref you don't have parents calling you an hour later screaming about Billy sitting a shift!)

Gildan2036, You must have a twisted set of testies and I think your undies are in a bunch or could be your brunch. All you people feeling sorry for refs make me want to take up golf where all you can do is blame yourself and not having a big enough Johnson.. vomit, vomit, vomit

Re: Re:careful
This thread is too funny. As far as evaluators, there seems to be enough at every game to have opinions on coaching and officiating. Just look across the stands, each person in attendance watching their player is evaluating everyone else, including team mates.

The way to get better officials is to start from the ground up with young kids, and have them stick it out for the long term. The only problem with that is all the "evaluators" helping define what kind of job they are doing.

If youth associations could get past the hurdle of over 50% of first year officials quitting because of all the hassles from coaches, spectators, and players, those younger officials would turn into better officials. Since more than half of them don't want to put up with what ever BS is out there, WE live with the environment WE create. Which is the same group of guys some of you think are terrible.

Next the thing about getting paid. Have you ever taken a look into a long term hockey officials gear bag? What you would see is approximately $500 to $700 worth of gear. Not the young kids, but the guys that have been around a while. Now, if they do youth and High School they can do alright but with all the driving some of them do, it's more about liking what they do, than making money. And let's not forget about uncle Sam's portion of that windfall...

Younger kids can do well, and pay part of their way through college if they want to become a "favorite" of the local scheduler. This happens when that scheduler is on the hook for a late game, or when some one else doesn't show up. He has a "go to" guy, and that person or group can pick up a lot of games.

Lastly, I think there are many people on this board that participate and volunteer in their local programs. I applaud them for their efforts. For those of you that sit back, point fingers and complain about everyone and everything else, why not stand up and make it better? Take a look in the mirror tonight, and ask yourself "what have I done to improve my local association lately?" You would probably have a lot less time to spend here if you did.

You are right about sour
You are right about being sour. With two weeks left in this season I can't wait till it's over. The stress of dealing with parents (who all know better) has crushed my desire to coach. However, there is no way that I would quit on kids. The refs that are getting ripped on out here are the kind of people that do that.

Show up to the rink to get their check and get out of there as fast as possible. Drop the puck on the wrong dot and change the game cause they might have to have their partner near the bench.

I just want everyone to remember that there are alot of good refs out there that do a good job. Make sure when you see the ones that do you let them know cause they are the ones that care about the game!

Re: Re:careful
I don't schedule refs, never have.

I have officiated baseball, football, and hockey from youth up to DIII and the one aspect that hockey seems to be lacking is a mentorship type program. In all other sports they seem to strive to put less experianced officials with more experianced ones, in hockey that just doesn't seem to happen as much and I think it should, it would benefit everyone if it would.

Evaluators are good and bad, I gave up reffing youth hockey after an evaluator came in and chewed out the kid I was working with. You mentor new officials and you really don't need evaluators. The key is new officials, just because they are an adult doesn't mean they're ok to be by themselves. People take up officiating at all ages. Two new adults looks worse than two new kids often times, because we are prejudgiced that adults should be better.

People need to realize that there is a learning curve in doing anything, it takes hundreds of games, not just one year, or one class.

This belief that because we pay officials they should be perfect is a bunch of crap. Try asking for volunteers and see how often anyone shows up. Officials are payed market value, nothing more.

Re: You are right about sour
Maybe we should have the good ones hold out there hats after a game and ask for tips. If you get alot of tips your are a good ref, no tips you just Suck!!!!!

If either one is out of Mankato, maybe.

It was many things that got me out of youth hockey, Wallace and his ilk in Mankato was just one of them. The beurocratic mess is another, the levels make no sense; much like CEP it just says you wasted time in a class and took an open book test. It has nothing what so ever to do with proficiancy. I've seen level 3's who can't skate and are beligerant and level 1's who are very good, calm and diplomatic. Yet in the end it matters what your card says not how good you are or aren't. At least the MSHSL doesn't do it this way.

There are problems putting an "experenced" ref out with a new ref. The first is that at the Bant. level you have 1 ref calling penalties and the other 2 working the lines. There is not really a way to have someone follow the ref around on the ice and watch him.

At the PeeWee and below there are two refs and having another official on the other side of the ice come over and tell him what he did wrong is not possible. You can't watch the players on the ice, your own positioning and another official. No one is that good.

I think at the squirt level that some of the evaluators are on the ice during some of the games (at least that is what they say at the lovely 8 hour coaching clinics).

The biggest thing that you have to remember is that this is youth hockey and yes some of the refs SUCK! I can agree with that. But it is youth hockey and in the end it should be about kids enjoying the game and not the refs missing a tripping call!

Enjoy the game!<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/grin.gif ALT=" >D">

Re:bigcurve961
I'd love to get the kind of money evaluators make. I've heard of getting $15-$20 an hour for evaluating/consulting or its part of the salary they make.

Thats if I don't gamble it all away at 7 clans in Warroad.

Re: Re:bigcurve961
That's a good one Gildan. From what I've known relative to evaluating, most of it is volunteer work.

If one is lucky enough to get paid the outrageous rate of $20.00 "hr" for the game, I'm confident they are driving how many miles on their own dime. I haven't done this, but if it was a money maker there would be people standing in line to sign up.

Re: Mentor
hockeyhelp30 makes some excellent points! The best thing that parents and spectators can do is to not get on the officials. They are going to make mostly good and routine calls but on occasion they will miss something or make a bad call. It is unfortunate but it is human nature! Even if you think they missed a call they may have seen the play far different than you did. As an upper level official I do not mind at all working games that involve younger kids such as PW, Squirt and sometimes even Mite and team me up with a level one or two official... If an official is comfortable with themselves and they know how to provide their partner with timely advise it will really help build that young officials confidence! When I am out there, I will not tolerate players, coaches or fans getting on me or my partner... Zero Tolerance people! Evaluations: Everyone gets evaluated twice. Call it a starting point and a progress report. Finally, if you have problems with the officiating... Sign up, put on the skates and get out there! You could become a huge asset or you might just wake up in an entirely different world...

Evals
The people that go out an evaluate do it for free. They are out there for the love of the game! They may get their gas money back but it is all done for free. $20 an hour? Do you think that there is that much money in Minnesota Hockey to have these guys out every night making that?

I agree with ThunderStorm. If you don't like it get out and do it!

Re: Evals
In Canada they have a mentor program where a young ref skates right next to a veteran ref. At first I thought it was a great idea until I seen the vet missing the game and teaching the yougster the same. Refs just have to let the kids play and not get there 2 cents in all the time. That's what makes a good ref.

Re: Evals
From an email I received from a high ranking official in district (I can not say the number) about ref's:

".... They all have jobs and families to support. Without them, we wouldn't need the players either, there would be no organized game."

A statement like this really makes you think what the intentions are of this board memebrs and why they are involved in youth sports!

Re: Evals
You refs have to remember we coach for the love of the game and the kids we don't get paid to control everything like most refs. I work with guys in the same boat, they are dominated at home by there wifes and when they ref it is there turn to dominate someone.
