D10 is going AA/A/B1/B2 this year and as I understand, it will look something like this AA - Centennial, Blaine, Elk River, Anoka, Andover, Champlin Park A - Chisago Lakes, Princeton, Spring Lake Park, Rogers, Irondale, Cambridge, Coon Rapids B1 - Chisago, Anoka, Elk River, Blaine 1, Blaine 2, Cente...

Since we're discussing District 10, could you imagine if Champlin Park or Anoka played an independent schedule and then was allowed to play in the District 10 playoffs? I am certain that teams like Irondale would cry foul. While this exception may have been passed by the District 9 board with the b...

So basically, if an association is practicing for 1 hour and playing a 1 hour full ice game each week (at both the higher and lower level mites), MM is providing almost 3 times the skill development time...no wonder why they develop kids so well. Any upper level coach, high school, college or pro wi...

Question...How many hours of skill development does MM give the kids in between full ice games? I ask this because most associations only have 2 hours per week for mites and there is no argument that can support spending any of that time on full ice games when the kids could be spending those 2 hour...

Re: Things that make you wonder.....

How many NEW parents/kids won't sign up for Hockey now........ Since they know that they'll have to watch their kid play cross-ice hockey for a few years. I've had my kids in both and nothing compares to watching a full ice game. Just my opinion.... What do you folks think will happen? I would say ...

I watched 2 mite full ice games this past Saturday and could easily count 3-4 players each shift that did not touch the puck and were not close to the play. The biggest reasons were the 6 dads on the ice pushing kids around so they spread out more and yelling for kids to "play position." N...

I will have to go with Aldrich, both for the old school feel and tradition but also for the classic Hill v WB battles that have been played there over the years. The place smells like hockey.

No matter what his intensity level is, you still don't push kids until they cry or grab their face mask. 6 year old kids have the attention span of 12 seconds or less, and you need to adjust your drills and explanations to deal with that. This seems to prove that parents really do not look out for t...

How the rule is called will determine if the rule serves its purpose(s). Here's a thought, instead of putting more grey areas into the game for the refs to call...Allow body checking at all levels of hockey, but when the kids are in squirts and peewees, any penalty that is a charge, boarding, check ...

Before the start of the second period the refs skated over to the ER bench and gave them a bench minor for illegal substitution. It was brought to their attention from apparently an Edina parent...

If your kid is that big and has skills that is great, remember everyone will catch up in size as the years go on, so remind him to develop his skills and he will be just fine. You hit the nail on the head. Rules to evolve the game can be implemented but if they are not properly enforced the principl...

We've had them before and they always seem to put on a show/parade to the box, but usually for both teams.

Can your son skate, handle the puck or does he just hit like most big peewees? Because if he can't, every level higher will be more difficult. USAH will allow contact in squirts but disallow "checking" at bantams. This basically means less open ice/blindside hits and kids running kids in t...

Loss to the Hockey Community

Sadly, the Minnesota hockey community lost another great coach. Yesterday morning, Steve Friese (52) passed away in his home. Some of you may remember or your kids may have attended Endurance Plus power skating school, first run out of New Hope and then Champlin in the 1990s. Steve dedicated many ye...

I think the main purpose of the rule would be to reduce head injuries and concussions that result because of big open ice hits and irresponsible head contact hits along the boards. Let's be honest, having more knowledge about brain development and concussions comes with more responsibility. The NHL ...

Yes I read that too. I'm not sure it will be such a bad rule. They want to put a program in place to start teaching body contact and angling in Mites that would progress through Bantams. The purpose is to emphasize skill development and angling skills. I know that each year when we use the word angl...

Hocmom,

You're community is lucky to have someone who gave their time to make it better, it is too bad some people think you're time was too much. You have set a great example for your kids, giving back to the community is the most under rated thing a person can do, but as you know, very rewarding.

The ADM is a good model to utilize but following it to the T might not fit in Minnesota exactly. The theories are great for mites, small area games and emphasis on skating/skills is great. All kids want to play games, unfortunately many parents want them to play games with score boards and goalies m...

I agree, 3-1 is great odds...what part of other associations adapting the ADM is going to put private programs ahead???? Look if you want to pay money to give your mites an early advantage, great, do it, but don't be mad when they don't make the NHL. Also, with more associations adapting ADM princip...

I think everyone is getting closer to the biggest answer to the original question posted. Whether you are choosing a parent or a non-parent coach, the decision should come down to experience, both coaching and being coached. Also, the overall focus of the association should be on development of play...
